What would be the purpose of having Mexican plates? Question 2 is - what year is it? Question 3 - is to to drive only in Baja or might you take it to the Mainland?

I live here year round, and the insurance is cheap, I don"t want to maintain US Insurance year round for possibly 2-3 weeks a year when in the states. Also don't want to deal with smog, I know there are ways around that. it would be 1988.

Do you have a local (Baja) insurance agent? We insure our car in Baja - fulltime residents and we have Oregon plates. We maintain the minimum insurance in the US because we do take the car there - but we have full coverage in Mexico. With Oregon, there is no smog cert so that is not an issue. Importing a vehicle that old should be no problem. Talk to an insurance agent here in Baja or maybe Geoff can help you (from bajabound.com) no relation to my username (or me)! If you want to register it in the US somewhere with no smog cert -- google it and find someone who lives there!

well, for the state in which your vehicle is registered (remember, we have OREGON plates) we keep the minimum amount of insurance for Oregon; which is way less than Calif; we don't even have to carry verification of Ins for Oregon....Calif - different story.

Yes, it can be done. We have a friend who lives in Punta Banda full time and is doing just that with his RV right now. His other vehicle is already imported. I don't know the details, but could try to find out for you.

Yup....me.

Only two counties in Nevada require smog...Clark (Las Vegas) and Washoe (Reno)......everywhere else is smog free
