We will be visiting a few remote ranchos soon and we always like to take something, espically for the kids, that may not be common, and fun or

Clothers and shoes-make sure the clothes are of a Respectfull type.
Hair Clips, Combs.
Basic Underwear for the Girls/
Levis and all type Jackets and Warm Clothing, especially if you get on the Pacific Side.
Go to the Internado School and they will help with the things needed.

Yea, David, we've got all that, but in the past when the gifts were handed out , at the end we realized that the teenage girls were still around and
we didn't have anything specificly for them.... I think Skeets hair brush and hair combs are a good idea, but even Kim said she would have a hard time
giving underwear. I don't think cosmetics are appropriate, and toys don't seem to be appropriate. Trying to think out of the box so to speak. Ask

Oh yah, for sure... I asked Sarah (16) and here are her recomendations beyond what was mentioned already: feminine hygene, chap stick or lip gloss,

Give them an experience. Kids don't get many chances to use binoculars and telescopes but they love to look thru them so I say bring out the binocs
and let them have a look. In fact, I've found that most people down there enjoy looking thru my binoculars- the military guys frequently pull them out
of my car during the checkpoints and look around with them.

Cell phones, convertibles, plastic surgery, piercings, tatoos. That what seems popular with the girls here in Newport Beach.
But for real, sunglasses(cheap kind), nail polish, nail grooming kits, hats, sun block, gift cards, single use cameras, teen magazines in spanish.

Sirena's favorite gifts were cosmetics...don't be too sure the rancho girls won't like it...they LOVE it...they get all dolled up frequently. Also
hair stuff is great...also they love any kind of kid perfume or that body wash stuff. Stuff they cant' buy there...I think too many bring pencils
paper etc...boring for them...they like stuff they couldn't buy. Also CD's of rap/reggae music is very popular with the teens adn they LOVE anything
with tweety bird on it. Calendars of the north are popular with the parents and the moms love those big containers of powdered ice tea from Costco.
Which ranchos are you going to?

Soccer balls, baseballs and bats and gloves, basketballs and basket, volleyball and net.

The area of Rancho Guadalupe in the Sierra San Francisco, and then down into the canyons for six days. Hope we run into some others while in the
canyons. We were there, at San Franciscio de la Sierra, just after Christmas to make arrangments for this trip and had a few things for the kids.
Unfortunatly we had also visited Agua Verde right at Christmas and we were tapped out soon. It was kind of hard to see some kids running up and had
given all we had already, but those young women... living in such a harsh environment, made us wish we had something just for them.shari - 3-20-2007 at 09:36 AM
I was thinking of a couple of the young ladies in agua verde when I said they like to get dolled up...the make up they wear is amazing! When in San
Fransisco de la Sierra say hi from my husband Juan Arce as many ranchers are Arces too. There is a shoe maker there who will make you custom ones that
are amazing...make sure you seek him out....wonderful footwear of all types can be made there. I envy you and want to make this trip sometime too.

I guess most of the boys were helping their dads as this photo from the early 1960's shows almost all women and girls with Choral Pepper (wearing hat
in center). I see one young boy at the far left... How old is Juan?
Pepper and others with Erle Stanley Gardner arrived by helicopter (no roads then, just a 2 day mule trip to San Ignacio). The people (mostly Arce's
and Villavicencio's) had never seen outsiders before!
Gardner (mystery book author, creator of Perry Mason, and Baja explorer) is credited for awaking the modern world to the fantastic painted caves and
cliffs in the nearby canyons. Members of the Gardner party even discovered more painted sites from their helicopters that were not visible from the
canyons or trails.
Many years ago Herbal Essence shampoo was extremely popular I guess because of the smell. My wife ended up giving away the bottle she had brought
for herself and on future trips we always brought lots of extras.
We also had a Polaroid camera with us and we had taken pictures of some of the kids and gave them the pictures. Later that evening one of the
fathers who was a beach vendor showed up in our camp willing to trade anything he had for that camera. I tried to explain that it required special
film and I had no idea where he would even find it. He was so set on getting that camera I ended up accepting a hammock for it. Have no idea what he
was going to do once he ran out of the film I gave him with it.
I think the point I may be trying to make is. be creative and thoughtful. Necessities are just that and always appreciated yet don't overlook some
seemingly frivolous yet difficult for them to attain items.
