Plant ID help

gringorio - 3-28-2007 at 06:37 AM

These plants were in bloom last week in the dunes around Bahia Gonzaga - The Baja California Plant Field Guide does not describe them. Does anyone know what they are called in English or Spanish?

Thanks!

Lillies are called Alcatraz in spanish I believe and a very popular motif here.

This could be a local usage. Lily is azucena. Alcartraz is a gannet or sometimes a pelican.

My professer on a field botany trip in the Mojave pointed out how much taller the Creosote bushes were in the sand dunes--turns out that sand actually holds quite a bit of moisture since it has little ability to "wick" out moisture like clay soils do...so just the top layer of sand is dry from evaporation, whereas there is still significant moisture deeper down.
