After 35 years of trekking around Baja I finally drove out to take a look at the old mine.
Road was good, dusty but easily traveled with any vehicle, and the place was fascinating.
The old school built out of onyx, the abandoned works, it is all a part of the Baja history.
And, the little rancho just 100 yards south of the turnoff on the highway, Rancho Sonora, sells really nice carved onyx figures for a very reasonable
price.
These are actually Baja souvenirs that make sense and look great in the garden or on the porch.
(At the border the US agent asked what we were bringing back and I said "an onyx turtle"
"A WHAT???" he said,
"you know, a carved stone turtle"
"turtle?! I thought you said turd."
That ended the inspection on a very jolly note!)

Oh yeah, we have stories, I will be spinning some in the next week or so.
Usually we take between 10 and 15 guys,
this has been going on for some 20 years.
Nomad Baja Vida is our fearless leader and we usually just make it a fishing trip.
This year we did more traveling, from Merced County to Loreto and back, a total of over 2700 miles, about 200 of those off road.
Whales, Santa Martha caves, lots of side excursions, new places to eat.
Camp out every night except the last one in Baja at Baja Cactus.

Yeah, we held our collective breath, eyes straight forward, and pressed on to Ensenada.
Found a couple of places that have pretty good bollillos in Ensenada, wish I could duplicate the Rosarito churros, but not worth another "close
