NOBS Party

jrbaja - 2-4-2004 at 10:04 AM

Well, we have decided to throw a party for the NOBS. Nomads Of Baja Sur. We haven't decided on the exact date yet but it will be sometime in between the 14th and 24th of this month. I know many will be down for Carnaval so please let us hear your input/interest.
Most everyone that is already here are flexible so we thought we would hear input prior to setting a date.
The party will be at Tuckers in El Centenario which is about 20 minutes north of La Paz. Should be fun and I am going to try and get some mountain foods for the party depending on the current mood of my van.
Plenty seafood around here if the mountain food doesn't happen so we won't starve.
This should be a kick after meeting some of the board members down here !
:bounce:

Natalie Ann - 2-4-2004 at 10:57 AM

Make it after the 19th and count on us. Cya ;)

Markitos - 2-4-2004 at 06:17 PM

I'd Love to go to that party, PLease make it before the 20th Please!! Will be sailing till the 18th and back in La Paz after that... But a las all good things must come to an end, and I'll have to head north for work and money:(... Only for awhile thou then it's back to the Sea.

Bob and Susan - 2-4-2004 at 08:12 PM

Where do you guys get so much extra time and ENERGY???:lol:

David K - 2-5-2004 at 12:18 AM

North of La Paz????

I have been to Tucker's, and it is southwest of La Paz.

Oh, I bet you mean northbound on Highway One, which does go south from La Paz before turning north! LOL That's like the freeway north to Ventura (from L.A.) which actually goes WEST! You guys have fun!

Bob and Susan - 2-5-2004 at 06:57 AM

El Centenario is north of La Paz.

Bob and I looked at this area carefully before we chose Mulege.

It's a nice development with lots of Canadians and Americans.

Maybe Tucker can give us directions......

sus:yes:

NOBS Fiesta........

Tucker - 2-5-2004 at 07:15 PM

As mi amigo jr sez, there will be a party at my house in El Centenario, on February 21, 2004 at 2pm. An invitation is extended to all members of this board and any other baja related boards. Please let us know if you are attending, soon!

You are all correct about the location of El Centenario, depending on your perspective. Email or U2U me for specific directions or even GPS co-ordinates (If DK can locate me with them, damn near anybody can!).

Food furnished for the first 10,000 after that you are on your own. BYOB.

Markitos

jrbaja - 2-5-2004 at 10:21 PM

You being a boat person and this being Baja, I would find it hard to believe that one or two more days would make a difference.
Providing you didn't have any incidents, which most Nauticos plan on, you should have. Just pretend you did. We will write you a note regarding the dangers down here and how you were lucky to get out alive.

bajalera - 2-5-2004 at 10:42 PM

JR, what in the world is mountain food?

bajalera

I'm glad you asked.

jrbaja - 2-5-2004 at 10:53 PM

Mountain food is food that is straight from the garden, axe, or 22 cal. rifle to the enchiladas and tamales it is put into. The rancheros don't have ice, let alone refrigeration.
And then there are the calabases casseroles. It was explained to me that because of their foods never having been cold, it makes a huge difference. And it does.
And then there's the venado but being endangered, could be a problem.
Now, if my new leaf springs and new transmission hold up, I will be more than happy to prove what I am saying to be true.
And if I were you, I would check it out at our party. Pure energy and flavors you won't believe!!!!:bounce:

El Centenario

jrbaja - 2-5-2004 at 11:00 PM

Actually, I have noticed a couple of them darn beaners runnin around here as well as the gringos and canucks. Starbucks is pretty much out of the question and as far as shopping goes, forget it unless you want COLD beer.
La Paz is where you shop for anything major, like food, clothes, ice, alcohol, etc. There are a couple really good restaurants here though and if anyone is interested, just ask.

Bob and Susan

Tucker - 2-6-2004 at 09:17 AM

El Centenario is pretty much a typical Mexican village, gringo population maybe 50 out of about 2500. Nearby El Comitan is an gringo enclave, possible three well-to-do Mexican families, the rest being gringos or canadiense.

bajalera - 2-6-2004 at 12:29 PM

JR - Thanks for the explanation, and I'd be interested in knowing about those restaurants.

When mountaineering with your amigos, have you ever come across wild jicama?

bajalera

Dave - 2-6-2004 at 06:03 PM

Couldn't you have chosen a better acronym? Sounds pretty gay.:O

Hey Dave

jrbaja - 2-6-2004 at 08:11 PM

How's Rosarito. I heard today it was beautiful while it is windy and cold here in the La Paz area.
A mouse is the third such person to join the board and immediately start attacking me. Do you think that the hens may be behind this cajone less nonsense. I think that some of the Nomads don't have the huevos to say things themselves so they get these junior clowns to state their opinions for them. Too bad they can barely spell and make it quite obvious they know nothing about about Baja. Probably the future predators that seem to be the majority in that country these days.

Bob and Susan - 2-6-2004 at 08:46 PM

Tucker,

Of course you are RIGHT!

It's still north of La paz...and what exactly made you choose to be one of the 50???

I have some training in Glenco GA that week...sooo bob can't go either....just in case we were still invited.:yes:

Sorry to hear that Bob n Susan.

jrbaja - 2-6-2004 at 09:30 PM

Lera, for american food there is the "Club Marlin". You have to look for it because it's kind of hard to see but it's near the north end of town on the east side of the Carretera. From the north, look for Los Arripes Trailer Park and it will be just south of that. From the south, look for Las Hamacas store, big beer can in the sky and Club Marlin is just on the right. Really good Ribeye's, Hamburgers, and american style foods as well as Seafoods, great Pescado Empanizado, and Mexican food. american sat. TV and a spectacular view of La Paz. It's the kind of place you take your Mother to if shes nervous about being in Mexico. Very american.
The other is I believe called the Econo Cafe. It is in the heart of El Centenario hahahaha and it is traditional Mexican cuisine. 3 tables, slow service, cheap prices, great food!

Markitos - 2-6-2004 at 11:10 PM

Well ... How about that party? Have you figured out what day/days it may be ?
Cause your right ..... ya never realy know what might happen.

Bob and Susan - 2-7-2004 at 06:51 AM

Jr is Right

Club Marlin IS the place.
Swim in the summer. EAT. DRINK
Survivor on TV on Thursdays while you sit on a couch.

Food is outstanding.

If you go please get us Pam the owners Email.....thanks sus :tumble:

Tucker

Debra - 2-7-2004 at 07:45 AM

Please u2u me (if you please) young son and I will be roaming after the party at CL and would love to meet you....I'll bring the spagetti

Bob and Susan

Tucker - 2-7-2004 at 10:24 AM

I live in El Centenario because I came to Mexico to live amongst the Mexicans, not my ex-neighbors from CA. I think gringo enclaves such as El Comitan tend to be detrimental to the Mexican experience, such as constantly criticizing your neightbors for any little thing. My neighbor's "yard art" is a 72 Dodge "en partes", his business, not my place to judge. I take care of my business to my standards and don't worry about them. So far as gringo enclaves go. I'll paraphrase a Buck Owens tune, "I wouldn't live in Comitan if you gave me the whole damn subdivision."

Markitos: February 21 at 2PM.

Debra: U2U coming later today.

Boy, do I wish I could be there, Tucker.

Stephanie Jackter - 2-7-2004 at 12:27 PM

But, alas, I'll be stuck in Tucson, helping the Jrs. with their science fair projects and trolling local businesses for raffle prizes for the school carnival. It's not the kind of carnaval I want to be at, but it'll have to do.

I've got a friend's niece from La Paz living with me right now and she and I are both bummin' that we can't make it to the real Carnaval this year. We got snow in the mountains here last week and she's on Mt. Lemmon learning how to ski right now (we took her to see her first snow ever up there last week), so at least she'll have a few new memories to replace it with.

I agree with you, having lived at your house last summer, that Centenario is a much better place to put down roots than Comitan if you want any Mexican flavor in your life (Don't tell Carol and Wiley I said that! -just kidding!). Centenario is not as pretty or fancy, but it's Mexican, and that keeps the perspective real.

The beach is a little nicer in Comitan if you're looking for deep enough water to swim in and there's a nice little palapa style hotel with an Italian guy who speaks very little english, that makes a mean plate of Lasagna, delicious Italian salad, yummy broiled zuchini, and what's that creamy dessert called?- well it's good too. Tucker can give you directions. If you go, tell him in your best spanish that the fat, hairy legged woman with three kids misses him and his food a lot!

Don't forget to show everyone the way to San Juan de la Costa too, Tucker. I love that area. This time of year the beaches there will be deserted. In the summer, it's a very Mexican beach area. The sandstone (I think they're sandstone, anyway), cliffs that jut up from behind the beach are just gorgeous to look at when the shadows start growing long around 4:00 in the afternoon.

I've always thought this board was too B.C. norte centered. Now that there's a good party in the best part of Baja, I've gotta miss it. Bummmmmmmer. Well, I hope everybody that does get to go has a fun time!

Oh, and last but not least, don't forget to get a good look at the mileage signs of Centenario from the southern entrance till you get out of town. How many miles to Tijuana????????

Enjoy. - Stephanie

Skeet/Loreto - 2-7-2004 at 12:48 PM

Tucker; Does the small Store across the Street from you still sell good Food?
Skeet/Loreto

Steph, is this the sign?

Tucker - 2-7-2004 at 03:29 PM

They must have removed the conflicting one.

Skeet....a couple of really good mini-supers here.

Oh, bummer.

Stephanie Jackter - 2-7-2004 at 04:17 PM

The first sign said it was 300 kilometers closer to Tijuana than the one after it. It was too cute.....sorry it's gone. - Stephanie

Well, this is so silly but I am getting notes from Nomads who can read a map, but don't want to ruffle feathers...

From downtown La Paz (Hotel Los Arcos) to El Centenario (Tucker's house) you go SOUTHWEST, NOT NORTH!

To go north from La Paz would take you to Pichilingue and Tecolote (end of the road). La Paz is on the eastern side of La Paz Bay (includes Ensenada de Aripes) on a peninsula that goes north and ends across from Espiritu Santo island.

El Centenario is on the south side of La Paz Bay.
Highway One coming from the north swings around the south side of the bay, past El Centenario and goes northeast into La Paz before heading south again to Cabo.

There now, please stop the u2u and email nagging :) As I said in the first post I made in this thread, El Centenario is on the highway 'north' to Tijuana from La Paz... it just swings southward first... like the freeway 'north' to Ventura, which goes west!

I hope everyone that goes to Tucker's beautiful home has a great time at the NO-BS party, no matter what direction you drive to get there!

It's always a source of great confusion of first timers to La Paz.

Stephanie Jackter - 2-9-2004 at 10:17 AM

You be sittin' 'er drinkin' yer Margarita and watchin' eh sunset.....and then all of a sudden, it occurs to you that the sun is setting in the wrong place and west is where east seems like it should be. You either decide to slow down on the alcohol or start looking at a map until you figure out your true location in the bay. We all eventually get it, the geographically challenged, just a little slower than others. - Stephanie

Skeet/Loreto - 2-9-2004 at 11:06 AM

This Thread is very interesting, reminds me Of having to convince a person that Reno Nev. is further West than Los Angeles, Calif.
there is a thing that La Paz has that I have never seen anywhere in my travels and that is " the most beautiful and different Sunsets !!The "Pearled" effect. Hope you all have a good time! Skeet/Loreto

bajalera - 2-10-2004 at 04:58 PM

DK, bless you for that Ensenada de Los Aripes. This is one of few Indian place names to have survived into our time, but seems to be on the way to getting lost. Map after map--even some in government publications--now shows it as Ensenada de La Paz.

bajalera

bajalera - 2-10-2004 at 05:46 PM

Debra - My point is: I look forward to meeting you and your son at the party--I'm bringing one of mine, too (although he's unfortunately a bit too old to be a playmate).

Bring the magic rocks. What's a magic rock fire, anyway?

Italian Restaraunt LaPaz

Phil S - 2-11-2004 at 06:59 AM

Tucker. Familiar with LaPaz. Could you give the name of the Italian restaraunt please, and a "quick shot" at where it is located. Going down from Loreto soon to LP. Would like to stop by. What is your favorite item there?

Phil, there are several......

Tucker - 2-11-2004 at 08:11 AM

Those of note: The Italian village in in El Comitan, the Jardin de Plato in El Centenario. In La Paz proper; LaPazta, on Allende just off the Malecon. There was one at Marina Palmira, not sure if it's still there. Of course there are others that I'm not familiar with.

My Italian experience consists of home made sphagetti and home delivered pizza from the Big Kajuna chain!

Last call for sign-ups........

Tucker - 2-12-2004 at 08:16 PM

let me know via U2U if you plan on coming! Party is 2/21 at 2PM.

Tucker

bajalera - 2-21-2004 at 11:06 PM

Great party! It was such fun to finally connect real people to the posts I've been reading for so many months. Steve had a good time too, and would like to interview you for his tourism study if you'd be willing.

Meanwhile, when July arrives I'd sure like to sleep on your breezy upper deck. Please send me an application.

You're all wet

"...the third such person to join the board and immediately start attacking me. Do you think that the hens may be behind this cajone less nonsense. I think that some of the Nomads don't have the huevos to say things themselves so they get these junior clowns to state their opinions for them. "

You've got it all wrong. The "so-called" new folks are shocked at your borish behavior. The "so called" old-timers have come to expect and accept this anti-American crap. The realatively new people come with a fresh prospective read it and see how it is dragging the goodness of the board down, they are pretty surprised and angry.

I like how you bad mouthed all the good folks on this board at baja.net a couple months back, but continue to stick around. Funny how your NOBs post got zero responses there.

If people, Baja, and this board don't fit into the exact little box you've made up in "your" mine they are bad.

I agree, it was a very nice get-to-gether. Great people, good food. An excellent mix of gringoes and Mexican folks.

Tell Steve that I would be happy to participate in his survery. I'm listed in the La Paz phone book, 124-6411.

You are right, that upper deck is a great place to sleep in the summer.

Thanks to you and all the others for attending!

jrbaja - 2-26-2004 at 07:57 AM

I am wondering why you are cluttering up this thread by bringing up posts from the past. I guess I am flattered by your interest in my posts when I couldn't give a rats arse about what most of you have to say.

David K - 2-26-2004 at 08:01 AM

JR, are you back home now? Its raining pretty hard in Oceanside this morning. Hope you and Carol get through it okay! Pastrami soon? Let me know when Dave has reopened from vacation.

Hola DK

jrbaja - 2-26-2004 at 08:11 AM

Nope, I am in El Centenario and I think Carol's flying home today. I have another couple weeks down here at least. Heading to San Bartolo tomorrow and then back into the mountains for more cave photos and some leather items I am having made.
This will be a good trip report when I get back. Lotsa pictures! The last couple days we drove from Punta Conejo to Todos Santos along the beach route. This is a trip I recommend. Shells and untouched beaches, flotsam and jetsom everywhere and some pretty exciting off roading. Definitely remote.
We have been having lots of wind and even rain a few days ago. But, being south Baja, it's all good!
See ya in a couple weeks Amigo. Pastrami time.

Wrong again (intentionally mis-leading???)

JZ - 2-26-2004 at 10:34 AM

The post is in response to your "crap" on "this" thread. You never miss a turn to slam people who don't fit into your little box, and I am just exposing you.

You have the common sense not to slam the regulars here, but oh... you do that else where don't you...

THE NEW PROTECTOR

jrbaja - 2-26-2004 at 02:48 PM

Are you insinuating that the many people on this board dont have enough sense to ignore my ramblings? And yours as well? I guess its a good thing you finally showed up to help this chicken coop group. You fit right in!
And by the way, its kinda cool to go back and read what I have said withouit having to search. Could you please post more of my stuff since you have so little else to offer other than raggin about me.
I also find it hard to believe you are trying to make something of no responses to the NO BS party from baja.net. Your point to that would be ?
Oh well, cluck away dude and keep bringing up more of my old posts. Its a good reminder to everyone before they come down here and act like themselves.

Thank you, Tucker and JR

Natalie Ann - 3-8-2004 at 08:17 AM

for such a great party.... really good people (folks from the U.S. and Canada and Mexico - who'd I leave out?) with many great stories, plus lots of delicious food. As Bajalera said, 'twas nice to put faces to some of the folks I've known through this board. DH and I had a wonderful time. When I'm back in La Paz later this year, Tucker, I hope to be invited to visit you once again. :)

Natalie....

Tucker - 3-8-2004 at 07:03 PM

A standing invitation is extended to you and your guy, anytime!
