Car repairs

Hola all:

I have been looking at a 1999 Subaru Outback for use in Baja, the East Cape area. Does anyone know about the availability of parts and/or service in La Paz or the Cabos?

Thanks,

Bill

Parts can always be tough to find. I usually take quite a few down with me as there are always locals to fix things.

Before you leave home find a parts house or better yet a Suburu dealer that is willing to ship parts to an address in Mexico via UPS, DHL, or Fed Ex. Shipping time is normally four days to La Paz. The shipper will collect taxes at the time of delivery. Hint: Some parts houses are willing for a fee to obtain parts from the dealer and then ship them to you. You will need to establish a clear agreement with the shipper, and possibly leave an imprinted Visa or Master Card blank invoice. Make sure that you get a non-toll-free telephone number as most 800 numbers cannot be accessed from Mexico. My parts house also has a vehicle description stapled to the invoice. It includes make, model, with VIN number.

I owned three Subarus ('77, '80, '87) all 4WD wagons and all with well over 100,000 miles on them... They were great... 25 MPG, all over Baja.

Only weak spot (other than lack of ground clearance) was CV Joint Boots ripping and CV joints needed replacement.

I am disappointed that the new batch of Subarus are AWD and not 4WD. The low range that was available on the later 4WDs was really nice to have!

Like today's Toyotas, the important thing is a vehicle that will not need parts in Baja!
