A current look at Mulege

I was there recently trying to right the problems left from Hurricane John. I was pleased to finally have electricity to our heavily damaged home.
The storm claimed more than just homes and belongings. I am happy to report that most of the riverside residences are in some form of repair or clean-up.
The brunt of the flood is evident in The Orchard where the river changed direction and foisted it's damage upon the homes along there.
Aside from constant pathetic pillaging the area is coming back to life. The plants are finally revealing their flowers and rapid growth is returning to Mulege after an abnormally cold and extended winter. Only a couple days have recorded temps above 80f.
The river is so clean now and at low tide offers none of the odors pre-John.
Biz is town is slow with a very calm feeling.
Pelican Bar is no more w/ Scotty moving to El Candil.
Sauls' La Palapa still my stompin' grounds. Hope his new adjacent restaurant opens soon. It will be awesome although certain places do grow on ya.
Ok, the river looks pretty darn good. The gringo effort shows well in some places. Thanks to that organised effort.
Rumors abound about a new Malecon on the notrth shore of the rio. That would also include a dredging operation. I have little faith in either.
The mangroves damaged in the flood have been cut and slated for burning.

In THe Orchard things are coming back on line. The destroyed electrical system has been upgraded and restored to all homes in the park. Water lines are all operable and the first two rows of new casitas are either totally repaired or are in advanced stages of repair.

The rio homes in the Orchard are another story. A few are owned by folks who do not own the land and are reluctant to pay for total repairs. Some others are owned by the park owner for renting so these will be repaired at his total liability and will probably be last to be recovered.
The town itself shows no real signs of the flood anymore. Some looky-loos come by and take photos regularily and ask and reamark about the tremendous flood. Usually though they just race by on the river road on their noisy quads.
Local fishing has been slow. Many are blaming the shrimp trawlers that have been working the immediate area.

I can only say that this era in Mulege will help prevent the onslaught of development that many felt was inevitable and soon.

I am determined to get the place back online this year. We love it there. I was able to get all the normal functions of a home restored and can now stay in the place albeit with spartan furniture. Almost all our muebles were stored in the now missing garage.. Already much has been done in and around the Orchard.
The coldish winter was apparent when looking at the rate of plant growth. Amazing to see how fast stuff grows there once it starts warming up.
My neighbor who lost his home is an awesome guy. He's decided to stick it out and has cleaned up the mess and is looking forward. He plans on using his spot to park his motor home till he can improve the lot. He brings down a trailer full of donation stuff like sewing machines and other useful goodies. Talk about selfless! My other neighbor(new) to the east whom I have yet to meet has cleaned up his place nicely. I imagine his repairs will go fast as I learned he is a contractor.
We are excited because Jose is to start repairing our perimeter walls this week. It gives our place so much character. The garage will have to wait. I wa able to reinstall the auto drip system. Funny thing tho, is someone opened the programmer a few days ago and switched it to standby(rain). Go figure.
I saw much has been done along the river farther east. Good on those folks for getting the job done. Good on Mulege for perservering.
