El Rosario food

Sharksbaja - 4-10-2007 at 11:35 PM

Damn that waitress. If there something that peees me off this is it! I realize that so many little places practice minimal washing but that is totallly unacceptable. The small stands etc are suspect because it's obvious they don't have running water. That does not mean they can't sanitize their hands though. The laws of Mexico are supposed to prevent desease just like the U.S. It is simple to understand why these laws are hard to enforce.
Mama needs help. Her age prevents her from watching and seeing these things going on. It is such a shame this place has lost so much credibility. I met Mama so many years ago and I'm sure she remembers me but how could I ever discusss or let her know what the visitors are saying. It's an institution I'd hate to see vanish. Maybe someone or some caring relative will step up to the plate. It's time.

Soulpatch, you will not find excellent food in El Rosario IMHO. I have tried a number of places there and they are pretty much on equal footing IMHO. Just go order some fish tacos at the bus or up the street on the right. You won't know the diff.

David K - 4-11-2007 at 10:51 AM

La Bocana Beach Restaurant was really good until Primo lost his cook... It could be good again, but we haven't tried it the last couple of times.

Baja's Best is very good when Ed is there for lobster... ask him to make it 'his style', always good for breakfast burritos (chorizo)... Tacos el Mision (Hugo Lopez') is good for the few things they have, including stuffed baked potatoes.

Tacos el Poblado just around the sharp corner, on the right get's high ratings... There are many places to get a bite (taco stands)... I cannot give a recent report other than breakfast we had at Baja's Best last Feb.

Guess we will need to try them all gain at this year's BAJA-ROSARIO CULTURAL FESTIVAL July 20-22, 2007

Does Mama Espinosa has any inkling about the horrible reviews she has been getting from gringos in the past few years?? Place used to be " the IN-PLACE " not too many moons ago. Maybe we could have Antonio go next door and maybe give her a clue as to what is happening to her business and could prevent a further decline:?::?:
Just a suggestion:P:P:P
I, for one, won't eat here again unless reviews improve.

David K - 4-11-2007 at 07:13 PM

We have had a few good meals at Mama's... when we eat there with Antonio. Usually breakfast... Mama's daughter Roli runs the place. It is really the 'tourist place' to eat with all the off road racing stuff on the walls... oh, an autographed Viva Baja sticker to Mama, as well!

Thanksgiving 2004 we had great Baja 'turkey' (lobster) for dinner... Antonio, Tony Miranda (Diamante del Mar) and I:

Here's Antonio and Lorenia talking to Roli at Mama Espinoza's:

As we were headed south on 4/1, we noticed a sign outside of Mama's advertising their new breakfast buffet. After a few overpriced meals there, we haven't been back.

Two notes, we tried a loncheria that is on the south side of the road just east of the military base. I think it is white with red trim and small...only two tables. We enjoyed our tacos and burritos. After we ate, Antonio said it was a locals hangout.

Tacos El Poblano was sold a while back. We've been back twice but won't go back again. The food is average at best. Too bad as Tacos El Poblano was great.

That didn't last long! Poblano replaced Baja Stone Restaurant at that location, Tacos was on the west side of that building... It started just over a year ago! Antonio will know why it closed.... Hey 'BajaCactus'!!??

Maybe Antonio could take over the Mamas..............or open his own place.

If he runs it like his other businesses it will surely be a winner!

BajaCactus - 4-12-2007 at 11:07 AM

I agree there are no great places to eat in El Rosario... After trying every place in El Rosario, when I go there these are my usual options:

-- Breakfast: at Mama's (usually "Huevos Rancheros" only) or La Mijita (she will prepare anything you ask, clean place).

-- Meal: when I go to Mama's I only order either "Arrechera Marinada" or "Lenguado al mojo de Ajo"... other places is "La Pasadita" (almost in front of No. 36 on David's Map, this is the one Bajaboy went to on his last trip) and "La Mision" (No. 36)... these two last places have few options on the Menu but they are good and clean. La Mision has very good stuffed potatoes and La Pasadita has very good "sopes" and "tostadas".

-- Dinner: MJB Hot Dog Stand (No. 31 on David's Map).

Tacos El Poblano used to be a great taco stand. The owners were from San Quintin... and that was the problem... they just got tired of coming back and forth every week... so, they close about 10 months ago. After that a local lady re-opened it but it is not the same... not at all.

Maybe this will give you some tips for the next time you pass through El Rosario... however remember that food and taste, are a personal choice, therefore saying someplace has good food is always somewhat relative.

Bob and Susan, Capt. George... thank you very much.

Now... some news... the BajaCactus Restaurant and Convenience Store are coming soon. I plan to begin construction in a couple of months... and with your honest help and advice, I believe it could turn out to be a nice decent place.

Enjoy Baja my friends!!!

With your willingness to be fair and provide value, I am sure both will be a success.

La Mijita

great food, even better people! Deborah was traveling down to Ojos with her daughter and stopped by for a bite...just closing, so they took Deborah, her daughter Ashley and our grandson Ocean home to their casa for a meal.

how about that?!

This is not the loncheria I was referring to. Maybe Antonio can help me out with the name. Anyways, the one I mentioned is east of the military base, almost across from La Mision on the south side of the road. The two table are located inside. Very intimate and friendly help.

David K - 4-12-2007 at 05:38 PM

Great news Antonio...

What happened to the good cook that worked for Primo (La Bocana Beach Restaurant)?

I have always had good food at Ed Lusk's (Baja's Best Bed & Breakfast/ Restaurant), but the flys (in the summer) and the dogs and cats could bother some... I look at those things like if it was the old Baja dirt road days, when you ate in a rancho's home.

What about Betty's (#13 on my map) Antojitos Mexicanos? We had great machaca & eggs twice... never tried her dinners.

It's amazing that as fast as I can make a map of the town businesses, they either change their name, open a new one, or go out of business!

oladulce - 4-12-2007 at 05:47 PM

We had a breakfast and a dinner at Bocana Beach when passing thru in January '07 and it was much improved over the breakfast we had in August '06. Good stuff and we'll probably stop there again.

cabobaja - 4-12-2007 at 06:29 PM

Last trip to visit family in Oceanside was May 2005. Left Elias Calles at 4:00am with the wife and 1 1/2 yr old Johnny and 7 yr old Cabo Guillermo. Drove 14 hours (mas o minos) to Cativina. Spent the night, left early in the morning and drove to Mama's for breakfast. Maybe we were just really hungry....but the break was very good and the service excellent.

After 2 years, we leave next month to repeat the same trip. Will drive to Cativina then break at Mama's. Will report food/service experience after we return home to Elias Calles.

Antonio, of course we will gas up at your station.....but we are looking forward to our trip back to SD in 2008-09 as we will stop and eat at the Baja Cactus restaurant. Will you have hash browns??:lol::bounce:

Antonio....will look forward to the new Baja Cactus restaurant on our next trip north in 2008-2009.

oxxo - 4-12-2007 at 07:08 PM

We've stopped at Mama's twice. We thought the first time was our bad luck, shame on them. The second time we stopped, shame on me. The food was bland and over priced and the service was slow and unfriendly. We will not stop there again. Heading down again next week and will pass by Mama's.

Can't wait for Baja Cactus restaurant to open. If it is like the motel, it will be outstanding! Suerte, Antonio.

woody with a view - 4-12-2007 at 07:25 PM

mama's is a relic. why subject yourself to the agravation? it's like coming to america and stopping at mcdonalds for a good meal. like antonio said, there are many different expectations and palates driving through baja.

out with the old and in with the new!!!

btw, last month Bia and i had breakfast at the bed and breakfast after a night at the world renowned "baja cactus, where the baja (going down?:o:lol::?::light::cool:is my wife the only one who made the same translation?) is more than a dream" and the motel was A+++ while the breakfast was good if you were hungry, but i'll look around next time in the interest of spreading the wealth.....

#27 on David's map is also one of our stops in El Rosario. Good breakfasts and good serivce. The owner is very friendly and attentive to a near empty coffee cup - my kind of host!

It has always been clean -

Baja's Best - well, we tried it two times and I agree that the pets are a pest when we eat.

the food

dr650 - 4-18-2007 at 03:07 PM

Hello to all,

I'm a new guy here, and I was just browsing around and ran into this discussion about the food in El Rosario. I ate a few meals there this last March, so here's my 2 cents on that subject.

I thought the food at Mama's and at Ed's place was pretty damn good. That was dinner at Mama's and a couple of breakfasts at Ed's.

Me and my friend rode our bikes down and back. We spoke a little Spanish with everybody waiting on us, smiled, and wound up with great service, great food, and great stories. We even got invited back to talk to Mama, and I never been hustled by a nicer lady.

We noticed that some of the Americans at Mama's were not very cool. A couple of fellas were making fools of themselves, drunk, and acting like they were big-time Mr. Baja or something.

We also noticed that some folks were ill at ease, the kind who probably have a problem with the food wherever they go, not because the food is bad, but because they just aren't comfortable with themselves. You know, either the workers got the order wrong, or they had to wait too long for the food, or the rice touched the beans ... or something. Just b-tching all the time. A few Canadians like that, too.

Ed's place was just about the same ... good food, good service, people trying to please.

In short, in my experience, the problem wasn't so much with the service or the food or the animals .... it was with the customers. My advice ... lighten up and enjoy the ride 'cus you ain't in Kansas anymore.

All the best,
Murphy

No pasa nada.

Slowmad - 4-18-2007 at 04:09 PM

Antonio, thanks for the response to Soulpatch.
I was wondering why the service at Tacos de Poblano had gotten so sullen and incompetent.
After good experiences there, our last visit was dreadful...never again.

Unfortunately, the food situation remains very mediocre in El Rosario.
The dream for me would be a Tacos El Sauzal type place and maybe an El Nido sort of affair.

When that happens, I'll be asking Antonio about monthly rates.

David K - 4-18-2007 at 04:51 PM

Attitude has a LOT to do with most things...

There are many places to eat in El Rosario besides Mama's and Ed's... There's Primo's, Hugo's, Betty's, and a lot more...

I go to Baja to have fun, relax, enjoy myself, be with friends, explore and EAT. Eating being just one of the many other things...

Look at the big picture! Enjoy Baja!

MoFish - 4-18-2007 at 05:43 PM

Lobster burritos a mamas I would eat em every time I drove by. Maybe Im just easy.

El Rosario - ahhhh the night life!!

thebajarunner - 4-18-2007 at 05:44 PM

Couple weeks ago our gang stayed at Baja Cactus Motel, and about 8 of us decided to walk "downtown" and catch the action, and find some fine dining.....
heh, heh, heh,
Well, the walking part is accurate, but I don't recommend this, an hour after dark, it is really an adventure.
And, no food in sight, we wandered for about 30 minutes, then trudged back to Mama's for some mediocre fish tacos.
Earlier in the day lunch at La Mijita went very well, as eleven of us just dropped in and got served a variety of good tacos and wraps. Not great, but pretty good.
Yep (or nope) El Rosario is not the gastronomical mecca of Baja.
Good luck Antonio, the restaurant biz can be treacherous, but given the excellent way you run your other ops. - well, it ought to be a success.

That's our ticket as well. If we're heading North, we'll just hold out a little longer.

There used to be a small taco stand/house at the corner next to mercado #3 on David's map. That lady was very nice, it felt like we were invited into her home with every stop. We never missed it.

We used to order potato burritos at Mama's for Cody when she was about the size of Soulpatches kiddos. But unfortunatly all the above stated problems put an end to those. She's into el Paraiso now anyway.

is this the place you refer to in SQ? we hit "la mijita" on the way south to get "into the mood" of "way out there" baja (after all, El Rosario is the last chance for MANY HOURS and depending on when we leave home, it is PERFECT for a late desayunos)......

on the way home we hit up the foto'd spot because we want to savor the best shrimp tacos on the west coast for last....disclaimer-that i know of:P

Don't know about the rest of the food. Kinda hard to screw up antojitos, I think.

This meal was great! I was starving too, and the Senora complimented me on my Spanish -- that went a long way. Nice dining room. I'll definitely try more food there when I pass through.

Her daughter told me two weeks ago that she is in Ensenada, and doing very well.
Do you know something we don't know?
Or do you think of Ensenada as "el paraiso"???
Just trying to understand.

Paulina - 4-19-2007 at 07:30 AM

"La Palapa el Pariaso" is a restaurant in San Quintin. Just as you enter town on the west side of the highway. Covered in bouganvilla (sp?) with Mexican flags flying.

When I said, "She's into el Paraiso now anyway" I was refering to my daughter, not Mama E.

sorry for the mixup.

Yeah, you're right, Soulpatch. Life's too short. I'm just not going to sit around and let someone have a go at me without throwing back. But, enough is enough. Have a good one, whether it's at Denny's, at Mama's, or wherever. And for God sakes, wash your hands ... before and after.

One Man's poison is another Man's poison, or something like that.

toneart - 4-20-2007 at 04:40 PM

Some of you may have read this last year, but here it is again: Last October I checked into The Baja Cactus for an overnight stay. Then I went into Mama Espinozas for dinner. I had crab burritos and a glass of wine. Around 11 PM my stomach started rumbling and then it felt like it was going to explode. Well, explode is a good description for what happened. I was up all night on the throne.

The first morning after the meal I actually got dizzy and passed out. I went into the office of Baja Cactus and told them that I had to stay another night because I was too sick to drive. I ended up staying 72 hours until I was strong enough to drive. The hotel staff became quite concerned. That evening, Antonio, the owner of Baja Cactus and also the Pemex station, came to my room. He went out and bought sports drinks with electrolytes and some Lomotil for me. The staff were all very attentive to me. After I got home I emailed Antonio with a big "Gracias!"

Needless to say, no more meals at Mama's...it could cost me my life.:fire:

like i said,

Didn't you say you're a newbie here? If so, shouldn't you get a clue who you're talking to before you open your yap?

Telling soulpatch that cute story about "uncool" gringos is about as clueless as you can get - understandable as a newbie, but the fact that you kept at it -- that's "priceless".:lol:

I can't believe this. What the ***** is going on here? I made my peace with Soulpatch, and now you want to take a Monday morning shot at me? Everybody's a tough guy from the keyboard.

All I said was that I found the food in El Rosario pretty good, and I found the attitude with some of the customers pretty bad. That's how I saw it. I don't care if I've got 3 posts on this list, and you got 3,000. Makes no difference to me. You got a problem with that, then you got a problem. But why the **** you gotta get personal? You want to disagree, pile on, okay. But watch your own mouth.

Larry, I just reread this thread and I think dr650 isn't the one to snap at... he made peace with soulpatch... The person who does more to keep the hate and people offending alive is who dr650 was responding to, just above.

Restaurant reviews are helpful and we have to expect different reports based on personal needs, experiences, food quality, service quality, etc.

Mama Espinoza's has been good and bad for food and service, always more pricey because it is aimed at tourists... So, it's hit or miss... Ed Lusk's (Baja's Best B&B) has good food but the house pets or flys will 'bug' some people... La Bocana Beach (Primo's place) was quite good then lost their cook, so last year the quality dropped... But, we read above that things are good again... The stuffed baked patatoes at Hugo's Tacos Mision are still great...

So, just know that what you read here may be what you find or may not be... buyer beware!:light:

dr650 - 4-24-2007 at 08:50 AM

Okay,

I'd like to thank the fellow .. David K .. who read the thread from the beginning and who made that observation. It was never my intention to insult or pee off anybody with my original post, but apparently I did. I'm sorry for that, so kindly accept my apologies. I suppose that whenever you voice an opinion, some might agree and some might disagree.

I shouldn't have responded to the sarcasm, attitude and insults with more of the same. Should have just let it all go, knowing that someone's comments often say more about who they are than anything else. I'm sure the veterans around here know who's who and what's what in that regard.

I also apologize to the people who had to wade through this juvenile crap. In the future, in such a public forum, I'll do my best to take the hits and let them roll right off my back. I imagine this medium is better suited to spread useful information than it is to take pot-shots at each other from afar.

Jeez, this halo's getting a little heavy ... think I'll go down to the bar. All the best.

dr650,

Here's a bit of advice. Treat each post on the merits of the post itself. Pay no attention to who wrote it or how many posts he's made compared to yourself. Address the issue as you see it and stick to your viewpoint.

There is a lot of politics on this board. Many alliances have been formed over the years and posters who always back each other up. There are also many indirect invitations to join one group or another. Just ignore all of that and stick to the content. Agree with all groups. And disagree with all groups when you think the poster is wrong. "To thine own self be true". If you like mama's - go for it. I don't agree with you, but I respect your right (to be wrong ha, ha).

From where I'm standing: it doesn't seem worth while to get all worked up over the quality of a burrito.

Thanks for the welcome and the words of advice, folks. I truely appreciate it. And, I'd love to go down to that Pyramid place on Cinco de mayo, but me, Soulpatch, Lencho and Roberto are all going down to a sensitivity training seminar that weekend. Tell you all about it later.
