Hotels, bars, fishing, etc

My family lives here and it is a paradise...lovely with lots of trees and gardens, flowers on the main street which is paved....no bars but it has 2 restaurants and for accomodation there is a lovely 2 bedroom beach house, a B&B, a small hotel, and a rustic beach house as well so it has something for everyone. Gas station, good stores, 2 pharmacies, internet cafe, 2 hardware stores, tackle shop, The fishing is superb and species depends on time of year. Summer and fall are best with lots of yellow tail, halibut, black sea bass, good surf fishing and casting off the rocks too...trolling, jugging and spear fishing is legendery...nice groupers! The people are lovely and beaches awesome....ask anyone who's been here...I'm sure some will answer your question here. One of the best things is that the weather is wonderful here in the summer as the cold current provides a cool breeze to keep things temperate unlike the rest of baja. March through June is windy in the afternoons though. If it seems like I'm blowing the Asuncion horn it's cause I am...it's a terrific place and most people who have come here have loved it. check out our new website. ONly problem is that the road is washboardy..they are paving most of it as we type but it's not done yet. Come and check it out for yourself.

Also, try doing a search on Nomads as many of us have posted trip reports. I can vouch for everything Shari mentions. I've been there 3-4 times over the years and really enjoy the place and people.

Hotels;
There is only one in town and it's OK but sparse with no view.
Shari rents a beach house in town, a primitive beach house in San Roque or a room or RV hook-up at her place.

Bars:
Lots of places to have fun and the bar is always open at Shari's.

Fishing;
Check the website, that is a 50 lb yellow !!
Juan will egt you fish !

Etc;
Very nice people, great scenery, food, agua purificado, gas, restaurants.....

What else could you want ?

it's a great place, more Americanos need to move there.

the coastal road from Punta Abreojos north is great, make stops in San Hipolito and Punta Prieta, some of the finest people you'll ever meet!

I know people camp on the beach at San Roque for free. San Roque is about a 10 min drive from Asuncion. I believe only one person lives there full time, but I could be very wrong about that. My family and I rent Shari's beach house there, and love it. You basically have the whole place to yourself. Every morning the fishermen come go fishing, and then go home. Shari knows a lot more about the place.

Fred, what kind of camping do you want? Free on the beach or you can camp at our place and have showers, food, fun whatever for $5 a night or RV camping as well. I forgot to mention the DISCO here....it's the closest thing to a bar but is only open sporadically some saturday nights and for special events and parties but there are lots of dances with live bands at the basketball court on the weekends or come during the Traditional Fiestas in mid August for a real big 4 day party.

ahh, you don't want to go to San Roque, nothing there...really boring..
no fish, lotsa rocks.....smelly bait. big waves, slippery sand, a viscious vigilante...........too hot, no wind, too much wind, not enough sun, too much sun...egads man! a regular hell hole..........

don't go there, don't bring your friends...it's very dangerous..I understand there is a Mexicano Yeti that frequents the beach there...It lives in the mountains and comes down to eat Americanos...ALIVE I TELL YOU, ALIVE!

Maybe I'll go there in August!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shari................Sounds great I am just looking for a place to camp and be able to walk on the beach. A shower is a plus. Sounds like you have a great place. I am leaving Las Vegas on May the 10th and heading South. I usually go to Los Barriles in the winter, and do the Pacific Ocean in the summer. Just ended a realtionship, so it is time to head to Baja as I missed it last year. I take my time driving down in my 79 VW Westfalia. Thanks for your info.

shari, what are the possibilities for diving? I assume there is no compressor in town for fills so we would have to bring our own compressor, correct? Are there any spots that can be dived from shore or would we need a ride in the panga?? Thanks for the information in advance,

I belive it is less than 30 miles from the pavement to her place...

45 miles of asphalt from Viscaino to the start of the 24 mile dirt section into town. The first half of the dirt section isn't too bad but the rest can get washboardy as hell when the grader hasn't been there in a while.
Took us 2 hours each way the first time (after grading) and 2 1/2 hours the second time, when the road was worse, towing a camp trailer, from Viscaino.

Road conditions change all the time depending on when they grade it...first half will be paved soon...nearly done now....look forward to your visit Fred...many miles of pristine beach to walk and at the moment you can fill your pockets with lovely pismo clams washed up with the huge swells. Yummy.

Shari, we have a long weekend coming up ,(Memorial Day) and many make a whole week of it. What kind of fish are to be caught and how would the climate be like in that late May early June time frame? Earthquakes still happening
would lobsters be available for purchase or out of season?

I to have been chased by the Mexicano Yeti, it ate one of my children I tell you, luckily we have extra kids to spare and are planing our trip for September. I repeat I would not go down there :lol:

Well Vaca...nobody will have lobster out of season here, all of us who had a few frozen ones have served em up to visiting Nomads by now but there is always some kind of yummy seafood to be had so don't worry...the road should be mostly paved by then and the winds will have abaited (mostly)...Juan says you can catch whitefish, sheepshead, cabrilla, halibut and it's just the start of yellow tail....depends on water temps. Hope to see you then!

...sometimes the beds have free 'built-in' vibrators in them...if fact the many of the casas there get 'free' vibrations from time-to-time...or should I say, "Shake and Wake!"

the salt water crocodiles are also dangerous....If it were up to me, I would just stick with San Quintin......

One of the nicest places on the Baja. There is not a day goes by that I don't replay in my mind some adventure there. Great people, welcoming and safe community. Great fishing, birding, etc. Juan, Shari and Serena are some of the most gracious people I have ever met.
