San Ysidro crossing?

Baja&Back - 4-14-2007 at 09:55 AM

In your honorable Nomad's opinions, would it usually be faster to cross northbound from Tijuana on an average Friday at 2PM OR Saturday at 2PM???
Only the 2 choices. :?:

bajajudy - 4-14-2007 at 10:07 AM

Sorry I cant help you with your question. I havent made that trip in over 5 years.

You guys headed home?
Stop by the next time you are down this way....next season?

Bob and Susan - 4-14-2007 at 11:06 AM

it's horrible both days

it's a little better to cross at 9-10PM

at 2pm the police may redirect you if the traffic fills up the circle

Just do it and remember the border wait is part of the Baja trip! Plan on 1-2 hours and be pleased if it is just 45 minutes! No bathrooms while in line, so plan ahead!

Bajafun777 - 4-15-2007 at 10:59 AM

This is why I got a Sentri card and its good for 5 years. I make the line coming out of Mexicali in about 12 to 15 minutes. My wife counted over 300 cars in the 3 lanes leading to the border and we just passed them by in the Sentri line:spingrin:. I actually go more often than I use to just because I can get back quicker and in the summer it definately makes a difference down here with the heat reaching 120 at times during August:biggrin:. The Otay seems to be the Sentri best choice for the San Diego area. It takes less time to get your Sentri if you do it online and then just one visit to complete at Customs at U.S. Port. I met some people from San Diego that choice to get their Sentri cards here by Calexico (the new port does the Sentri cards) as they said it was faster than in San Diego. I do not know but I only spent about 2 hours doing everything even getting the truck checked and sticker put on. Otherwise with out one of these Sentri cards David K is right plan on 2 hour line and kick back with stop and go traffic. bajafun777

Bob and Susan - 4-15-2007 at 12:06 PM

no a 45min to 2 hour wait is NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

as citizens of the USA we should be ENTITILED to respect...

the government NEEDS to recognize some citizens need to cross daily and weekly

there is absolutely no need to wait in line for 1- hours ever at ANY government run department

Now there's a smart idea. :lol::lol::lol::lol:
Given that the line is in Mexican territory, how do you propose this be accomplished? I have thought many times that they should have "citizen-only" lanes. But, do you think the Mexicans in line would respect them? And the Mexican police enforce them? Frankly, I doubt it.

They would if there were a $500 fine. ;D

I propose pay lanes with graduated payments depending on how crowded or how quick you needed to cross. What's your time worth?

If I cold have my way

fdt - 4-15-2007 at 01:17 PM

I would have pay lanes that would have some sort of rail system that when you got to the border (special lane or lanes) someone(read a mexican) would hook up your vehicle with a chain and you could turn off your vehicle (saving gas and not polluting) and it would be pulled mechanicaly, go thru a car wash:o and depending on the wait time you could even get a wax job:wow:. Now to make it even more relaxed this lane would have an adjacent mooving walkway:wow:, were you could stretch your legs after a long trip or be free to make calls, check internet, have a drink(soft), read the paper or a magazine, trade in pesos, sell your empty pacifico bottles or even get a shoe shine:O. The chain would be disengaged shortly before you reach the border inspector and you would be set to cross back with a smile on your face:spingrin:
The way I see it if you go for a car wash you are looking at an hour at least, specialy on a Sunday.
How about 10 dollars a crossing? Of course Nomads would get a 50% discount:wow:, frequent crosser discounts would be available as well.
Any investors?:?:

at san ysidro there is a toilet near the u.s. end of the curio stands. $.50 or so but it is clean. just ask. where do you think all the vendors go?

at otay, before you get to the caliente place in the line, there are baseball fields in the industrial area on your right. either pull in and park or if it's 2pm on a saturday:lol::lol::lol::lol: get out and walk towards the center of the fields and ask. there are a lot of people around. and bring your own wipe-um....

the line does not back up because of the mexicans...duh...
it the usa border guys making a statement...

no USA citizen should stand taking abuse from this or ANY governmental agency and...
those who just say "well that's the way it is" ..."enjoy it" are not making AMERICA better!!!

bob-

any ideas on how to improve the flow? maybe a terse, "could ya hurry it up, bub?" when the inspector asks what you have to declare!:light::lol::bounce:

Interesting

bajaguy - 4-15-2007 at 03:46 PM

"no USA citizen should stand taking abuse from this or ANY governmental agency"

In all of my times crossing the border back into the United States, I have never been subjected to any type of abuse by the personnel manning the checkpoints. I believe that if everyone followed the rules on entering, had their documents ready and answered the questions asked in a civil manner, the process would speed up.

Additionally, if people of a criminal bent would not attempt to smuggle drugs, people, contraband or the like across the border, I'm sure that the inspection process would be less time consuming.

I personally don't mind the inspection process. There are things that you can do to make the inspectors jobs easier, and I do them. I even occassionally get a laugh from the inspectors when I cross.

My suggestion to speed things up.........have dedicated lanes for US citizens returning to the US, and dedicated lanes for foreign nationals wishing to enter.

Bob and Susan - 4-15-2007 at 05:21 PM

sorry i don't have this "one" answer:lol:

but waiting in line for 2 hours is abuse...and disrespectful

there are plenty of counter-terrorism devices in place to move the line along quickly

foriengers are not the ones making the lines long
it the employees working at the booths...period

if you think waiting in line at tj is making your country safer...
maybe we should have a 2 hour line for you guys:lol:

That simple? They should hire you, then you could solve all their problems, right compa?:lol:
I doubt it that would make much of a difference, except on off-hours. Most of the time, when I cross, ALL the lanes are open. The truth is, the volume is just overwhelming the current infrastructure. Adding personell would only help if the infrastructure were expanded. Again, I think half the lanes should be restricted to citizens, but I don't think that's enforceable given the anarchy south of that border.

I guess Bob thinks they should just speed people through. Why not just eliminate the border entirely - that would speed things up. :o

Sounds like you have ALL the answers.:lol:

Just curious, once you get to the booth, how long does it typically take you to get across? Two minutes? And do you think that's unreasonable?

How about instead of separate lines for citizens simply separate lines for honest people? ;D

I would guess that 2 minutes has been determined to be enough to raise suspicions with an experienced border guard at which point the suspected vehicle is sent to secondary. Unless you are telling us that there were zero confiscations or arrests last year and we've just been wasting our time? Has 9/11 faded from your memory that quickly?

It appears that OUR government agrees that long waits at the border is unacceptable hence the construction of Otay Mesa to increase capacity of the then existing crossings at TJ, Tecate and Mexicali? US Citizen Only lanes would be nice and we don't need Mexico to enforce them. Violators would simply be directed back to Mexico to start again at the end of the line. I'd bet they only make that mistake once.

bajabound2005 - 4-16-2007 at 08:02 AM

Aim for a crossing mid-morning, preferably on Tues, Wed, or Thurs. You'll have a 15 - 20 minutes wait typically. Another suggestion to shorten the wait -- stop all the lane changing that goes on. Once in front of the agent, we've never been there for more than 30 seconds. We have passports in hand, the windows down, sunglasses off. "Are you bringing anything back from Mexico?" s/he asks. "Not a thing." is our typical reply. "Have a nice day." And we're off.

If you're driving from the Sur which is causing the 2 p.m. crossing, drive as far as Ensenada or around Rosarito and spend the night. Lodging is pretty inexpensive while gasoline is not! Get up fresh in the morning and head for the border. Don't plan to arrive before 9 a.m. though. 9:30 -10:30 a.m. is best.

SDRonni - 4-16-2007 at 08:13 AM

We have friends in Temecula and drive there often from San Diego. I can't remember the last time the border check there was manned.......

Oops

All I wanted was to negotiate a good price for a Caesar salad and lunch w/margarita for my up and comming Tijuana guided walking tours. It was hard to say no to free tequila:no:
It wont happen again:saint:
At least not today on Monday;)

This morning with my coffee, I sure enjoyed your late night conversation :lol::lol:

Still love your other idea for border crossing. Ready to invest in your venture. ;D

Walking tour, interesting, what is that all about? Could be interested.

While Ferna is probably correct that Fri would be better than Sat, you never know for sure.

If it were me, I would base my decision on known facts. Crossing on Saturday would mean spending one more day in Baja.

Ain't that what it's all about? ;D

That's what I figured you were getting at. While the 2 min check is far from optimal, yes, I do believe a two minute check, as long as the agents are properly trained, provides some protection - do you think a zero minute check would be an improvement?

If you cross as often as you seem to, why not take a crowbar to that wallet and get a SENTRI pass?

Bob and Susan - 4-16-2007 at 05:30 PM

i'm done driving back and forth every two weeks...

but...

the little check the "border guards" actually do does not protect our country

intelligence and technology does

forget 911...never...it was sure a wake-up call

DENNIS - 4-16-2007 at 05:47 PM

Actually, the check which should be done on every person entering the U.S., given the current state of affairs, would ruin our lives.
What do they look for? Arabs?
Mexicans with Spanish blood have Arab blood and they look similiar. A tough call for customs officials.
Being Irish myself, and looking like it, I dont know what the profiling would be. Probably an alcohol profile. Maybe BG can add something to this.

why not monitor both times on this site??

Ah sure now and didja never hear that the IRA was listed as a terrorist organization? Twas in all the papers, Boyo!

I'm into this late. I paid no attention to this thread at first as I rarely if ever cross at SY. But, after 2hrs,10min. at San Luis yesterday and seeing how long this thread was getting, I checked it out from the beginning. I'm sure this is much more info than the original poster ever wanted to know but that's the way these things go. I have to agree with Roberto, it's the infrastructure that's the problem. It's just not designed for today's volume of border traffic. Not for TJ, the world's highest volume border crossing and not for my little podunk ferdamshur. I would kill for a Sentri pass if it would do me any good. I would consider it cheap at twice the cost. But it will be many years before there is a physical possibility of such. We have 6 booths at San Luis with maybe 50' to split the TWO lanes on the Mexican side leading up to it. These two lanes parallel the fence from 1st St. East back towards Sonoita and Mex 2. I look at the border every day, I live 2 miles from it. Yesterday when I spent a day in El Golfo de Sta. Clara, Son. was the first time this year I've crossed. It's just too damn much hassle getting back to go for a daytrip. As we inched along at about 12 min. per block, my bud Jose bailed out, went around the block to pee, buy a sack of tortas, and catch up, a block ahead of me. When we finally, hallelujah, reached the line, the processing with the Customs Agent was not a wave-through, but neither abusive nor unreasonable. I'd say about 4 to 5 minutes. The other day I heard a most unusual thing, a California politician saying something that actually made sense! I only caught a piece of it and didn't catch the name but I think it was a guy from Imperial County. It was on the occasion of Bush's visit and the jist of what he was saying was that it was one thing to be building fences etc. to keep illegals out, but what we who live here need for our local economy is a better way to allow LEGALS to cross the border in a reasonable manner for work and shopping.
