In anticipation of our new popup camper I've been researching the Waeco and Engel 12v/120 fridge/freezer's and am looking for So Cal sources for
them.
The newer 5&6 day coolers work great for drinks and most grub but I'm interested in being able to freeze fish etc. for a few days before the trip
home....Neal Johns - 4-15-2007 at 10:33 PM
West Marine http://www.westmarine.com/ for Waeco. Store in San Pedro.Bob and Susan - 4-16-2007 at 05:05 AM
go to a local "ice house" and have them "shave" the ice in you cooler...
the shaved ice will cover the fish...
as the ice melts it forms a thick block on top of the frozen food...
it will still be frozen 4-5 days later if you have a good air-tight cooler
ps...then the fish don't "smell up" the rest of your "baja catch"...Hook - 4-16-2007 at 09:41 AM
Use the web to search them out. My friend who just bought a new Waeco purchased it from somewhere in the midwest. I think he found them from a link
off the Waeco site, itself. It was much cheaper than anything he could find around here. I think he got a deal on shipping and of course no sales tax.
The Waeco also has an optional insulated cover that is worth considering. Seals the whole thing up and has venting for the vents (what else?) and a
cut-out for the controls.
I wont be able to be more specific for a few days as I am going to Vegas, baby! Gonna win enough to upgrade to a fridge-freeze. cbuzzetti - 4-16-2007 at 10:08 AM
Here is what I found when I was looking at these units.
Some of them charged handling and sales tax so buyer beware.
Let us know who has the best price/service.Halboo - 4-16-2007 at 03:43 PM
West marine has the 50qt waeco for $699; about $10 more then the folks at the 3rd link above who are in FLA, I'm going to call WM and see if they'll
charge me for shipping......Hook - 4-19-2007 at 10:41 AM
Back from Vegas. Won at craps (ALMOST always do) but not enough to upgrade to a FF unit.
What did you find out? I would imagine that WM might ship one to your nearest retail outlet for nada. Or they should. If not, go into the store and
order one.
Still, the sale tax on 699.00 is significant.

I never have soggy food on my trips, even using an ice chest.
I bring the vacuum sealer down for fillets, anyway, and use it for just about everything.
Our last trip to guaymas/Mazatlan, we brought back a kilo of those flour tortillas that are almost translucent. My wife puts a small square of waxed
paper in between each one and seals up about 8-10 per "envelope" while we are down there and we freeze them when we get home. They come out almost as
good as at the tortilleria.
Must be the lard, too.
But seriously, if someone is going after an electric fridge just to avoid the soaked food syndrome, a vacuum sealer is much cheaper and has tons of
uses.tripledigitken - 4-19-2007 at 11:21 AM

Jerry,
No tax on that order. $699 total cost.
Hook,
The soggy tortilla reference was meant as a joke.
But seriously not having to deal with ice is a nice side benefit.Halboo - 4-20-2007 at 07:51 AM

No bueno!
I was wondering why they seeemed so competitively priced.rob - 4-20-2007 at 04:43 PM
I have used an ARB/NORCOLD 12v/110v fridge/freezer for the last 6 years, originally bought for my camper. I think Engel may be the same thing
rebadged.
Works VERY well, even in 105F+ weather.Halboo - 4-21-2007 at 05:45 PM
There's an outfit up in Torrance that carries the Engels and ARB's.
I'll probably end up going there to save shipping costs.....robski - 4-22-2007 at 01:16 PM
I know their warehouse is not in CA, but you can check em out compactappliance.com. 10% discount for FF engle brand.
