La Garita, La Paz/Todos Santos

Our Mexican friends told us we just had to try La Garita on the road between La Paz and Todos Santos, about halfway between the two. We did today, and we weren't sorry.

La Garita is one of those roadside stands out in the middle of nowhere with a dirt floor and palapa roof, but everything is clean, clean, clean. You can identify it by the 20 foot tall Modela can in their front yard. It is Mexican "soul food" at it's best. They have no menu, the waitress tells you what they are cooking for that day. We had chorizo quesadillas today but they also had burritos, tamales, tacos, and chile rellenos. Everything is cooked in front of your eyes. And here's the clincher - they keep their salzas in the refrigerator! Everything is fresh and delicious. Is it gourmet dining? No. It is just simple Mexican fare that is safe to eat, tasty, inexpensive, and makes you believe you have found the real Baja.

Our Mexican friends have never steered us wrong....on restaurants anyway.
