Bruce, it's the start of the big summer tourist season to your area. Maybe post something and see if someone will bring it down for you. I am in the OC. Have them u2u me.

I am going to be in Mulege around the 3rd week of June but it will not be convenient for me to carry it down with the cabover on the back, the wife, the dog, all that wine, half of Costco..............the ferry from Topo may turn me around at the gate:lol:

...what did you replace the hitch with?

My 99 SD's hitch is OEM, I believe, and looks kind of 'whimpy'...I guess due to the space needed for the spare tire/wheel makes the 'receiver' part short.

I've been planning to build a hitch extension to use with the camper, but haven't found a good design yet...

Did you find something better, or ????

Mexray, I bought a Putnam XDR hitch. Class V with a 2 inch opening. Got it at hitchesonline.com. Very easy install if you have c-clamps to keep it in place while you do the hardware (which came with it). about 165.00 plus shipping which was another 70 bucks or so.

Class III are typically 5k-500 tongue or 7.5k-750 w/ weight dist hitch. Are you sure you need more towing capacity?

What's the floor length of your cabover? Is the overhang an issue with what you tow? You might be better off with a 2 1/2 inch receiver like a Reese Super Hitch if you have to go with a receiver extension over 18 inches. Those also have heavy chains running to the ball mount area from the hitch superstructure.

I am using a solid metal ball mount that is about 18 inches past the end of my hitch. It just barely allows up to open the door to pass through on our 9-4 length Lance. My boat has a bow pulpit that sticks out pretty far.

Our Lance has about a 10-1/2 floor. I also have a solid bar extension, and with the hitch ball bracket, I can get enough clearance to tow.

So far I'm just a bit hesitant to tow anything other than a small utility trailer for the moto's.

Like I mentioned, that 2 inch receiver is rather short, and a bigger trailer load could really put a side strain on those welds to the crossmember.

I hate having to weld up chain brackets with turnbuckles, etc - as that's rather 'mickey-mouse' in my opinion!

The best extensions I've seen, have two, 2in receivers to carry the load...but that's just more weight, but lots stronger when considering the side loading.

I'm not in a big hurry, so I'm just going to see what develops...before I tackle another new project!

Just got the Diff gears changed to 4.56's last week (from 3.73) with a Detroit Tru-Trac in the rear. Going to haul the rig over the the coast for a few days next week to try em' out! Looking to try and get in some beach time up here in Nor-Cal...and leave the trailer at home, this trip!

The one I'm giving away is a stock Ford one, I believe. Got it from a guy who changed his out. My boat/trailer can weigh as much as 8500 when completely loaded up and fueled up (rare). I have towed it to San Carlos three times and Mulege once with no problems. I do have a weight distributing hitch.

I wouldnt worry about your hitch unless you are exceeding this.

Welded, huh? Mine uses eight gnarly-assed, hardened bolts.
