Parking in SD and transportation to the border?

JZ - 4-23-2007 at 09:23 PM

I'm flying out of TJ.

Where is the best place to park in SD that offers good transportation opportunities to the border. Hoping for specific directions.

Anyone have a shuttle schedule or know the frequency?

there are ots right at the border, don't know if they are long term. park at the SD airport and get a cab to the trolley and take it to the border.

Never flew out of TJ, but, I have used SD's Tijuana Trolley and its free parking lots several times for my flights out of San Diego airport. "Blue Line" trolley runs every 15 minutes and at $2.25 is a good deal.

Bus or taxi after crossing border to TJ airport should be ez.

I've heard numerous stories about breakins involving vehicles left overnight in the lots at the border. I experience it myself in the 90s and only lost an old CB radio.

I like the Trolly free parking idea.

Free parking improves my Pacifico budget.

Good info! Thanks. I looked at the web site, there are like a dozen different stops. What is the name of the lot(s) with the free parking? How long does it take to get to the border on the trolley from the lot you use?

I know the Old Town lot has free parking. I have boondocked in that lot more than once.

bajadock - 4-24-2007 at 09:22 AM

JZ, Hook's choice of Old Town is a good one for SD airport parking. The trolley website map shows all of the parking lot stops. Supposedly, it's a 24 hour parking limit, but, my attitude has been how could they possible enforce that?! I also use Palm Ave lot in Chula Vista, likely 15 minutes to border.

Good deal. Thanks Hook and Bajadock, I'm gonna give it a try!

They can, and (occasionally) do

The police patrol the lots at night. All it takes is for the same unit to see the same car two nights running.

So would they tow it? Or just ticket it?

Don't know, what do the signs say?

Either way it would be expensive. There ain't no more $20 parking tickets. ;D

Where do you live? If I were even remotely close to the trolley or the coaster I would leave the car at home. Get a friend to drive you to the station.

I'm in LA.

Silly question but why don't you fly from there? Drive to San Diego, trolley, bus, border-then reverse...why?

Even if you were saving money you wouldn't be saving money.

JZ - 4-24-2007 at 01:30 PM

If you have 4 people you save >$1,000. Plus the schedules and flexibility to change tickets can be better sometimes (i.e. evening returns give you an extra day on the water, all flights to the US from HMO are at noon or before).

I fly from LAX alot and sometimes from TJ. On this trip not all people have passports. So flying from the US is not an option.

JZ, you say you are flying from Tijuana and are in LA. Why do you want to park in San Diego. Most airlines have free shuttle service fro LA and points between to the Tijuana airport, yes, free
As for parking at the trolley stations, I would advise against it, beeing that I have commuted for years on the trolley and know that there is no security.

Aeromexico, free

Volaris $15

A Volar $132 pesos

You can use these people for transportation all the way to the airport

What I ended up doing was parking at a lot right at the border on the US side. It cost $7/day and was a 5min walk across the border and to the taxis. They have a shuttle also.

Yeah, exactly. I think there is another one that is maybe even a little closer. I'm gonna check that out next time.

Yeah, I wanted to do that. The problem was the train schedule didn't line up with the plane schedule.
