Alaska Airs "Bid on a Squid Diving Adventure"

Don Alley - 4-24-2007 at 02:23 PM

I saw something about "ecotourism" from a local (Loreto) source. Can't remember where, but the gist of it is if your vacation is centered on nature, it's ecotourism. They had another buzzword for other kinds. For example, if you go to Rome to see the Vatican, Paris to see the Louvre, that's not ecotourism, that's the other kind.

So, fishing would be a kind of ecotourism, at least by their definition. Ah, nice to know I'm "eco," until they outlaw sportfishing.

Whale watching in the winter, squid watching in the summer.

But it's all just more tourism marketing, marketed with a little greenwash for extra appeal. In this case Alaska is trying to fill seats and LB is trying to fill rooms. Maybe the trip even comes with a tour of LB.

As for the locals, maybe they have more sense than to get in the water with a bunch of big squid.

I ask myself, since most of the ecotourism is seasonal and non local friendly, how does it or doesn't it affect Loreto and los Loreteņos? Is it a winter supplement to an otherwise slow season or is it just further proof of a new economic model of haves and have nots arriving soon to your favorite Baja town?

Thanks for the comment and asking the question publicly. We're on the same page now. Whew!

Please stay tuned to this and let us locals (who havent left the country in several years) know when you start seeing ads from LB on the inflight entertainment.

Hey, Pam, are you aware of any local Loreto business offering this "squid school" - or is this just another bunch of nonsense from LB promoters?

4baja - 4-25-2007 at 06:34 AM

just what i would want to do down there, jump in with a bunch of squid.

4baja - 4-25-2007 at 06:35 AM

Mullet Frenzy!

Don Alley - 4-25-2007 at 07:56 AM

Who wants to bid on this trip with me: Kayaking with Mullets.

Bidding kayakers must have a hairdresser certified mullet, or they can be caged and a mullet shown to them by our expert Mullet Kayaking Team. Includes three nights at the Historic and Cultural Inn at Loraydo Bay, and a complimentary bottle of Southern Comfort.

But hurry, bidding ends April 24th!

On a more serious note...

To some of those promoting "eco" stuff sport fishing is about as welcome as a power plant at Chernobyl. They are well on their way to forever closing many prime fishing areas in California, and the Marine Park people in Loreto, while allowing apparently unlimited gillnetting, see closing areas to fishing as the only alternative to "manage" fishing.

Then again, there are a few biologists who consider this new mania with close interactions with marine wildlife as dangerous to people and wildlife...

My favorite marine eco video:

Now that's scary!

I'll pass on diving with squids.:D:)Will dive into a plate of mullet anytime, fried or smoked, real tastey.:D Mullet roe and gizzards are downright yummy.:D

Then you may be interested in this:

".....At this time I suggest that all anglers adhere to all rules and procure all necessary permits including the marine park permit (we've always advocated this). If you are checked be courteous and do as instructed. If you are photographed hold your valid license and marina park ticket next to your mug just in case they wanna use any images in the future. Maybe its a good idea to display our permits like we're used to north of the border, just in case. ..."

from the report at: http://bajabigfish.com/conv_report.html scroll below the inshore yellowtail section of the report, regarding Marine Park photographing tourists inside the park for ...violations??? :fire:

Its important enough news to do a rare link back to us

to another posted that asked about a school on diving with squid...I don't know anything about it but they ought to be manly ecotourists and dive with the squid sin jaula, being concious of the environment they ought to think about all the free aluminum ions they will prevent from being released into the sea by just saying "no! to the cage"!

ecotourist vs school of humboldt squid, more fun than the c-ck fights
