Help with planning next Baja trip!

surfdog - 4-26-2007 at 09:29 AM

Nomads,

I am planning a long weekend trip (4-5 days) with my wife and 2 boys (10 and 12). It will be there first trip to Baja and I want to give them a good taste of what it has to offer. We love the beach, surfing, fishing and some exploring (not to extreme). I have been down the Pacific side to GN and down the Sea of Cortez as far as Bay of LA.

What I would like to do is set up a base camp in a Nice Motel in the San Quintin area (maybe La Pinta/Desert Inn) for a couple days and then venture out from there. Then move down the coast closer to GN for the last couple days. The Key is to stay in fairly nice facilities that are reasonably close to good surf spots and maybe some historical sites or other adventures. We will be driving a GMC Yukon 2 wheel drive and want to do some off roading. We will probably just stick to the Pacific side for this trip. If we can stretch another day I would like to swing through Bay of LA to show it to them.

The main questions are:

1) Recommendations for base camps?
2) Beaches/surf sites near the base camps (30-45min drive)?
3) Historical sites near the base camps (1hr drive)

Thanks in advance,
surfdog

Surfdog, please use my Baja Self Guided Tours web page to help you decide what to try and see. http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/tours (this link appears at the bottom of my posts along with my web site and Baja notebook links).

Baja historical sites is my interest along with beaches and canyon oasis camping!

I have many sites listed, grouped near destinations in Baja... have a look.

Your only problem with the 2WD will be sand near the beaches... just air down and have a pump to return the tire pressure.

Here is an example of the sites near El Rosario (they are direct links to photos on the actual web site):

El Rosario Area

Missions, Museum, La Bocana, La Lobera

Cactus Garden and Sauzalito mine ruins

Petrified Forest & La Bocana Beach

El Camino Real near Km. 80

Las Pintas Fossil Grotto

Los Martires to El Socorro, cactus forests, petroglyphs found!

Mision San Fernando and petros '05

Mina de San Fernando (plus mission and petros in '00)

El Marmol & El Volcan

Agua Dulce historic spring (plus Baja Cactus Motel)

Mama Espinoza Museum & Search for Santa Ursula

If you get to GN, look up Sirena and stay at Los Caracoles where she works as the receptionist in the afternoon/evenings and she will set you up with where to go...from there you can visit laguna manuela, nice playas at Tomatal too and fun things to do in town for the boys.

Shari, that is exactly what I am planning to do in GN. Are there any good surfing beaches near by?

Great stuff David. Thanks for the link.

De nada... so much Baja... so little time!

Surfdog,
Shari mentioned El Tomatal which is about 45 mins north of Guerero Negro.

Good surf spot but only on a NW swell..2 or 3 surf options right where the road hits the beach. Its on all the maps. usually a military checkpoint there to mark the turn off. 4 or 5 miles off road, mellow.

El Rosario area has some surf on a south swell but lots of off road driving to get to it. Good luck!

New plan for you.....:o

with 4-5 days you could do a great trip around VIZCAINO area....go out to Tortugas/eugenia....bahia asuncion....down to punta abreojos...and back to highway....easy roads...beautiful beaches.....surfing...fishing....

just enough off-roading and surfing to have a fun time.....

surfer jim,

Are there any motels in the areas mentioned. I know about shari's place but other than this is area is all new to me, Any recomendations would be appreciated. Camping is OK but I'm not sure my wife will go for 4-5 days of it.

Thanks!
