What kind of truck do you drive in Baja?

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 10:36 AM

Hola, mes amigos,
I am contemplating driving from Los Angeles to Loreto for the first time ever and I need to buy the right kind of truck. (My everyday car isn't going to cut it.)
I have about $5K - $6K to spend. My concerns are repairability, durability, and insurability.
One mechanic recommends a Toyota, but they are muy caro...plus how available are parts if something happens? Are Fords or Chevys better because of the cost and availability of parts and which cars do Mexican mechanics know best?
I will be one of two women in the vehicle, so dependability is a must.
Later on, I would like to find others to caravan with us to Loreto for the "Fishin for the Mission" tournament in July. A safety in numbers kind of a thing.
Any suggestions would be great...muchas gracias.

Best Truck For Baja???

Cameron - 4-28-2007 at 10:49 AM

For $5k to $6k? 1995-1996 Toyota Tacoma! There's more than a few Taco owners here on the board, and if you give it a day or so, you'll see a list of responses to your post a mile long. Everybody's got their favorites, but I'll bet the great majority of the responses will include the word "Toyota".

If you need something bigger to haul lots of stuff around, an American-made, fullsize pickup might be better suited, but you'll spend a lot more on gas, and they're usually not as reliable. Breaking down on I-5 is one thing, but it's a whole lot worse when you're in the middle of nowhere. :(

Suerte!.. Cameron

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 10:52 AM

If it were me in your shoes, I'd buy a used Toyota Dolphin RV like this one found on craigslist.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 11:08 AM

hey there, Pack, I'm looking for a truck, not a casa!
;)

I am going to be bringing fishing gear and diving gear for about six people...the other four are coming by plane...but one intrepid fool, I mean friend, wants to go on a "road trip"!

bajalou - 4-28-2007 at 11:17 AM

While I don't drive one (at present), parts are available for Toyota's about everywhere in Baja that I've been. Lots of Mexicans drive Toyota's.

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 12:23 PM

TOYOTA:lol::lol::lol:

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 12:28 PM

uh oh, bajaguy...are you laughing at toyotas or with toyotas?
put up or shut up...what do YOU drive to baja?

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 12:34 PM

If'n I had the $$$$$, I would be driving a new Toyota Tundra double cab, 4x4....but for now, and only going as far south as our place in Ensenada a 2002 Mazda Tribute, a 1986 Subaru Brat (stay in Ensenada car) or a 1995 Toyota Camry....but If'n I had the $$$$$.........Toyota Tundra.....oops, already said that!!!:lol::lol:

If I didn't have the Subaru, I would be calling that above number for the Toyota P/U!!!!!!

[Edited on 4-28-2007 by bajaguy]

fishbuck - 4-28-2007 at 12:34 PM

With as much gear as you intend to carry you'll need a full size truck.
I use a Ford F150 extracab. It's a great truck. I used a Ford Ranger extracab and it's was great but only for 1 or 2 people plus gear.
Fords are probably the most popular truck in Baja.
Toyotas a good trucks. I think it's a bit of an urban myth that they are more reliable than american trucks. My buddies drive toyotas and they have had their problems.
$5000 isn't going to buy much truck. It will lickly be high milage. Check autotrader.
Look for something completely stock. That includes the radio. No aftermarket stuff like alarm etc.
The less tampering t has had the more reliable it will be.

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 12:37 PM

hey, Fishbuck......check yer u2u (please)

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 12:40 PM

I was wondering about Ford trucks...see alot of them around town and while they don't hold their re-sale value as well as a toyota, I am not looking for re-sale - I want safe transportation...not pretty...just something that will get us there and back, maybe get on a beach or off the beaten track a little...
So, this is very helpful...anyone else want to vouch for a Ford?

comitan - 4-28-2007 at 12:40 PM

Baja-girl

A Toyota Tacoma will carry all of your stuff but think you should get one with a shell to lock it all up. There are many in the Autotrader in your price range.

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 12:42 PM

I think he's laughing like, "What other choice is there?" The consensus on this forum will undoubtedly be Toyota for the gas mileage and the availability of parts.

I myself drive a VW bus. I wouldn't recommend a VW to anybody, but yet I couldn't imagine driving anything else. It really handles the washboard, gets decent mileage, has plenty of room for gear and sleeping, is light enough to dig out of sand, and it surely must be the funnest vehicle to drive on Baja roads and outback. The value of my VW is minimal, and I try to not bring too many irreplaceable items, so I'm prepared to abandon it and take the bus if need be. But that's just me.

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 12:45 PM

I have a '92 Ford Ranger, and it has never let me down - I've been lucky. It's just not as much fun to drive. The camper shell is definitely a must however. Mine has lockable doors on the back and sides.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 12:50 PM

Don't get this wrong, but I'm a little leery about two girls driving around in a truck y'all nickname a "taco" - I think there is a dirty joke in there somewhere...nevertheless, I'm going to keep an open mind...

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 01:05 PM

I must admit that it took me quite a long time to make the connection between "taco" and Tacoma.

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 01:16 PM

Pack....didn't want to mention it, but I also have a VW....a 1973 THING...great run around car....my Yellow Lab likes it!!!

Baja Girl...that Toyota above has 4WD and a shell....looks like a good deal to me.....check it out.....Give it a once over with a Toyota mechanic and maybe new shocks and tires....good to go!!!

DENNIS - 4-28-2007 at 01:22 PM

Just buy it, get in it and drive south till the front wheels get wet.

I think it's only a problem if it's pink! The truck that is...

DENNIS - 4-28-2007 at 01:25 PM

Oh boy. Can't wait to see where this goes.

The road from LA to Loreto is paved, and it's pretty good pavement. 1,000s of cars drive it every week. You don't need a truck.
Most makes are driven in mexico, so can insure/repair most any car in Mex (lux brands like saab, bmw and ferari may be hard to find parts)

Yeah, but where's the fun in that? Let the girl get her truck. She needs a truck, and a cowboy hat wouldn't hurt either. She's going to need something to talk about when she gets old, and this adventure can add to her tales.

I say buy a 4x4 Toyota, tell a mechanic that you're taking it to Baja, research some the past threads here on Baja Nomad so that you are prepared - let some of the air out of the tires for sand, use a shovel to get unstuck, bring water, parts, tools, jack, spare tire/tires, first aid kit, etc., and have some fun.

mtgoat666 - 4-28-2007 at 01:44 PM

Forget the truck. Get the Porsche boxster (new, because parts are hard to find).

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 01:45 PM

But don't get crazy and drive off into the distant dunes! I've see it happen.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 01:46 PM

I did try to call on the toyota, John is busy...but in the meantime...there are actually a lot of trucks for sale in my price range...my biggest fear is breaking down (in between San Felipe and Loreto) and some nice man saying "Lo siento, senorita, no puedo arregular su carro hoy." I thought that toyotas were notorious for being stolen too for their parts...remember, dos ninas, with nadda none zero zippo zilch knowledge of automotive repairs.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 01:49 PM

...and I do want to have fun...and I'll have alot of stuff to bring...and I would love to have some company - need to be in Loreto July 10th to pick up my friends at the airport...that's my only requirement...
xo

flyfishinPam - 4-28-2007 at 01:55 PM

1989 Toyota 4-runner 4WD. The dustiest vehicle in Loreto and PROUD OF IT!!!

Packoderm - 4-28-2007 at 01:58 PM

Between San Felipe and Loreto? Maybe you should discuss your intended route as well. It sounds fun though. I'd bring camping equipment in that case, and I don't want to hear any of this "hotels only" business either. But I'd say that that stretch is the safest stretch for two girls - it's too rough of a road for troublemakers and opportunists.

cabobaja - 4-28-2007 at 02:23 PM

Have lived in BCS for 11 years. Still have my 1991 Toyota 4X4 Xtra cab. Purchased it new at Toyota Carlsbad, 208,562 miles. Purrs like a kitten. The wife has a 2002 Toyota 4Runner 4X4. I guess we are a Toyota family!

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 03:14 PM

For safety's sake, I am contemplating bringing my dog. I tried to attach a picture - but this is all so new and confusing...and dog safety in Baja will be another question, I'm sure...so, toyota, dog, beer, cowboy hat, and a better map...que buena!

Don Alley - 4-28-2007 at 03:16 PM

I have a 1991 Ford. It's OK. I'm thinking of a 6-cylinder Toyota Tacoma though.

IMGP0987.jpg - 38kB

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 03:24 PM

Oh, I really like that truck, Don, but I agree, 6 cylinder seems important. You are living full time in Loreto or just lucky enough to be there lately? Yo gusto mucho Loreto! Wish I was having lunch at Isla's now....

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 03:41 PM

Crusoe - 4-28-2007 at 03:57 PM

Be Smart.....Find a 1995 or 1996 Ford F 150 exteded cab with an automatic transmission and a small 302 v8 Fuel Injected motor. It will get 18 to 24 mpg. and have lots of room for your stuff and dog. Plus a very comfrotable ride.Try to find one with less than 100k on it. There are lots around. You can find one easy for $5000., or so.Get a lockable canopy too. Best most reliable truck ever built. You wont be sorry!!! Good luck and have a great trip.++C++:biggrin::biggrin:

DENNIS - 4-28-2007 at 03:58 PM

Great smile on your dog.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 04:03 PM

Crusoe, you know, I was thinking that although the Toyotas by far have a better reputation, I have been driven around in Fords for the last several years and they are comfortable, and seem to be very reliable, and for my limited dollars I know I can find a better deal on a ford than a toyota (lower mileage, etc.)...I have to say, me likes the way you think...

...and my doggie is a cutie...if a bandito comes around, she'll even make a bark. Then invite him in for a marquarita.

Bob and Susan - 4-28-2007 at 04:06 PM

My Ford has a small 8 cylinder engine, 4wd, automatic. It has air conditioning that does not work, and two gas tanks, with a malfunctioning valve between them. The brakes work, kinda. The windshield is...interesting. I took the camper off a while back.

Its handling on the highway is, imo, dangerous.:o

I bought it about 4 years ago for about $5500; it only had 70,000 miles then and one owner. It's worth about $1200 now.

I could get by with a slightly smaller truck, one that's easier on the highway driving.

The truck lives in Loreto full time, I'm here most of the time.

DENNIS - 4-28-2007 at 04:25 PM

Don ....

Sounds like you're getting your moneys worth out of that truck. How many miles on it now? About 73000?

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 04:35 PM

...good one, Dennis, but all seriousness aside, Don, that's a good point...are you happy with the truck for that price or are you trying to tell me not to go with a Ford?

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 04:40 PM

Don:

And I bet you get better mileage off of that second tank.:lol::lol:

Loreto by way of San Felipe.....sounds like the long way, but scenic!!!:?::?::?:

Hey, Baja Girl....get the Toyota, and David K will throw in a "Got Baja" decal...............if you get back to LA, fdt will throw in a "I survived HWY 1" decal..............
can't go wrong!!!:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 04:47 PM

Damn good looking truck there, Mr. Tan, and in my price range...don't laugh at this next question, I'm a newbie - but is diesel fuel available throughout baja? I could convert to bio-diesel and enjoy the smell of french fries on our journey.

comitan - 4-28-2007 at 04:54 PM

Not only available but cheaper.

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 04:55 PM

uh-oh....going downhill fast!!

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 05:00 PM

hey, bajaguy, I just noticed that the dog on your avatar looks just like my dog...check it out!

bajalou - 4-28-2007 at 05:03 PM

A lot cheaper than in the USofA, particularly Calif. Less than $2 a gallon.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 05:09 PM

...so should that be a serious consideration? The larger Ford trucks have diesel, but that might be more truck than I could possibly need.

So, it looks like Toyota Tacoma v. Ford F150...the big chevy is too far (Nevada) and again, probably more truck than I could use...plus, you know, I kind of want to keep under the radar...

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 05:34 PM

Yep, the dogs do look alike. I have a 4 year old female Yellow Lab (bajadog).

Just keep repeating to yourself.....Toyota - Toyota - Toyota

When is your trip???

Baja girl, welcome to the board. You are going to have your avatar up in no time with the amount of posts your putting in right off the bat! This is what I drive, F350 diesel. More truck than you could possibly need? No. My grandmother used to say that it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Sounds like you are in for an adventure. Have fun!

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 05:41 PM

my first trip via carro is the weekend of July 7th - ish...I am serious about trying to join up with people...so, I am flexible about exactly when to leave the Los Angeles area...I would be willing to house a few folks in my lovely, spacious home driving down from further north to the Fishin for the Mission tournament- or I would be willing to drive a little out of my way to join up with people further south. I also could house a few folks in Loreto for a night or two who might be headed further south than that...

I need to be in Loreto around noon on July 10th to pick up folks from the airport...otherwise, I don't have a specific date or time or itinerary.

I will be going to Loreto via private plane over memorial day...but I am very, very excited about the road trip in July.

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 05:43 PM

Yikes, Pauline, that is one heck of a baja-mobile, with us being such close neighbors, maybe I could borrow it for a week or so?

bajaguy - 4-28-2007 at 05:57 PM

baja-girl:....you should try and make the book signing and wine tasting on May 5 at the Pyramid Resort in La Mission, just south of Rosarito and north of Ensenada. There will be lots of Nomads there.....meet and greet in person.

Get all the info that you will need for your trip from the Nomad experts!!!!

Baja_Girl - 4-28-2007 at 06:04 PM

The meet and greet sounds awesome...
Anyone driving down from Los Angeles/Orange County? Would be more fun to have company...I've never crossed the border by myself...except by commercial airlines...and as I said, my regular car will never go to mexico.
Thanks for the invite!!!!

Diver - 4-28-2007 at 06:07 PM

Royal blue with very low miles.
Only driven in 1st and reverse.

Single white male 69years young looking to guide young girls on roat trips to baje seriously bajagirl when you decide what to get have a honest mechanic check it and also don,t buy budget tires, and when you get to loretto you have lots of folks to pick up think about room and make sure it has fuel injection ,,, Jim a;so jeep cherokees are good and are reasonable

David K - 4-29-2007 at 11:10 PM

Well, it is either Toyota or Ford from the sound of the posts here. What happened to all the Dodge people?

If it is an easy to drive, reliable, affordable truck and you don't need full size, then a Tacoma is my choice... only because so many Baja amigos already had proven them superior... and then so did I with my 2001 xtra cab Tacoma (136,000 miles in 5 years). No breakdowns and only failures were a O2 sensor and a water pump at 90,000 miles that dripped! You should have seen where I took it in its 5 years!

In 2005 I traded up to a new, bigger, four door Tacoma. It is 1 1/2 years old now and has 53,000 miles on it... many in Baja.

No breakdowns and only two complaints: rear springs not stiff enough (bottoms out with a load, the way I drive) and the anti lock brakes (haven't failed but act strange and growl in slippery road conditions. My '01 never did and it had anti lock brakes, too).

My '01 at Mision Santa Maria followed by my '05 at la Bocana Beach... both Tacomas were 4WD and had the TRD package.

Baja_Girl, I have some friends that go to the Fishing for the Mission in Loreto every year. I will ask if any of them are driving down as like you they all usually fly as several of them have their own planes. Now as to trucks I still have a 1987 F-150 4X4 that has over 157,000 miles on it and I did have to work on the transmission and replace two water pumps and I put in a heavy duty radiator. I do not take the Ford truck to Mexico any longer, as I have a 2003 Chevy 2500 diesel truck that takes me everywhere and diesel is only about 1.80 a gallon in Mexico. Will let you know if I hear of someone going down. Most of these guys and women are professionals or in some type of government job or law enforcement. I will ask my wife if she knows of someone as she has an engineer at her work that motorcycles through Baja a lot and has gone all the way to Cabo on it. David,
that is an awesome truck - at the very least I know it will either be a "taco" - ay carumba (see earlier postings) - or a Ford F150...there are many trucks available in my price range - so the next thing to do is hit the streets...My mechanic friend favors the Toyota, but this is not to negate anything about the Ford Trucks - in fact, my personal experience is that the fords are awesome.
So, I will probably do what all baja girls when there is a big decision to be made: eeny, meeny, miney, moe...baja girls are fun to know, get an truck and off we go, eeny meeny, miney moe...works every time.
xox

Hook - 4-30-2007 at 04:09 PM

Baja_girl, in your pricerange, I would go 1/2 ton Ford or Chevy from the mid 90s. Probably less reliable than the Toys but so much more comfortable in the cab and so much more carrying capacity. I love 8 foot beds......uh, in trucks that is. The ride is also smoother and quieter.

The Dodges from that era tend to have creature comforts that fail

Crusoe - 4-30-2007 at 06:00 PM

Just Another Vote For FORD..........If your smart you will find a 1995 or 1996 F 150 extended cab with an XLT package interior, with bucket cloth seats. Here's why!!.....The middle seatback folds down and and you have the most wonderful " pooch platform" . Your doggie can have his/her own aft compartment and when he/she needs a pet .she/he can put her head into the front seat and participate, with the grown ups. Check one out..:lol::lol:

Crusoe, nice advice. When I drive by construction sites... I always enjoy counting the number for Fords among the workers. 9 times out of 10 there are more Fords in the group than any other make. Ford has been the number one selling truck for way over 20 years in a row. 8-foot bed is a must, along with an upgraded XLT or Lariat package. I now have newer Ford trucks, but I still miss my old 1990 F150 with that straight 6-cyl inline engine and the 5-speed manual tranny. That was one great truck.

That's my 2-centavos worth.

I agree... Much bigger bang for the buck if you ask me. Great truck for a great price. In the used truck arena the pricing is even better for what you get.

...so, really, do I have permission to look at that awesome white Ford F150 that Fish$$ found for me in Rancho Cucamongo? Its a little over my budget, but whenever I really really want something - I figure out a way. The only thing I don't like about Fish$$, is that he wanted me to "lose the dog." The friend, I understand, but the dog? Who doesn't like a smiling dog?

Just kidding Bob, you now I had a1986 Ford TEMPO,you know they where supposed to be the worse car ever for ford, besides the PINTO.And never had no problems..I sold it with 115000 miles for $500 and it was recked it in Rosarito beach,it's resting place was a metal recycle plant in Baja...

Ya, it's a cute dog alright. Okay, the dog can go. That's why ya gotta have extracab. Doggie can ride back there and smile all the way to Loreto.
Make that guy an offer on the truck. Try 5500-6000. All he can do is say no. And you can always throw in that extra girlfriend you don't need anymore.

Baja_Girl - 4-30-2007 at 09:52 PM

Fish, i really, really like that Ford F150...can't wait to see it...who knows, you might be my hero afterall? how fun would be to get to the Pyramid in my new toy Ford? anyway, the mechanic has to approve, but it looks like the exact thing I was hoping to find...and I have a teenage son who wants a car, and this might be the thing to keep him safe, too. muchas gracias amigo...

I just looked at that white Ford
again and unless something is wrong with it $6700 is a fair price for that truck.
I know because I have a 99 just like it but 2wd and V6 with a 5 speed. I just smogged and registered mine today and am going to advertise it for $6000.
Mines not anywhere near as nice as the white one. It also as 124,000 miles.
Anyway good luck!

Baja_Girl ...

don't buy used for baja
buy NEW:saint:

lease if you have to but...

don't take a chance...
most of the place is desert and NO ONE is there!!!

When you buy used you are probably buying someones problems...
bite the bullet and don't cheap-out!!!;)

Havent seen the white Ford post, but make sure it is the XLT or Lariat package. Dont get the bare bones, work truck models from any of the big Three; less insulation, cheaper seats, fewer (or zero) creature comforts.

ASK WHAT HAS BEEN REPLACED. ASK FOR RECEIPTS FOR CLAIMED WORK.

I am a confirmed used truck buyer, but only after finding one that someone had cared for and documented. It's so easy to find someone selling one cheap because there is a bambino on the way and the wife is done bouncing around on SoCal freeways.

Cypress - 5-1-2007 at 12:48 PM

Gonna stick with the Silverado 4x4 for a while. :bounce:It's one tuff piece of machinery. Good to go long after some of those dinky rigs are belly-up.:bounce: One problem, it doesn't get many miles to the gallon.:(

vacaenbaja - 5-3-2007 at 08:48 PM

I have a 1987 Nissan pathfinder 4x4 that I put 350000 miles
on. I stopped using it because after 12years and that many
miles the suspension rubber components were wornout by ozone and use. The price of gas also figured in. It never got better than 20MPG on the freeway, but would get 16 to 18mpgs
when packed up for trips to baja. Standard transmission and
5speed of course. The Nissan automatic is not worth a darn.
I am quite happy with my 4wd 1995 diesel Chevy Suburban.
Finally enough room for my baja stuff and two or three other
passengers. Not to mention the ability to tow most rigs without a drastic increase in fuel consumption. I bought the truck used and it now has 187,000 on it. Still gets 18MPG on
the freeway. real good for a truck that weighs as much as it does. With the 40 gallon tank it makes for only a couple
of gas stops for most trips up to G. Negro. At $2.00 a gallon
in Mexico, diesel is the way to go if you have to tow.
