I need to know what Ferry is better please
We are driving up the Pacific coast of Mexico with our 2 dogs. I would like to know what you think of the ferry from Mazatlan.
Do you know how much it cost.
Can we have our dogs with us inside.
how long does it take.
Or what do you think of the ferry from Los Mochis
Same questions as above
Or is there also a ferry from Guaymas ?

You are FAR better off taking the Los Mochis ferry to La Paz. Takes 6 hours instead of 15 hours. Costs 1/3 less. Goes every day. You cant take pets
upstairs on any ferries, but they're OK in the rig for 6 hrs - it's overnight anyway (midnight to dawn).

The ferry company is Baja Ferries at www.bajaferries.com. The ship is the California Star, a reasonably modern Danish Malmo ferryboat.

I don't know what it takes, but we did see a lady with a little dog in her cabin on the ferry from Santa Rosalia.
Our two yellow labs were fine in the truck for our trip.

It appears our cost to take the ferry from Santa Rosalia to the mainland, Topolobampo or Guaymas would be around $850.00 USD. We pull a 28 ft
trailer with our 3/4 ton pickup.
We have never had occasion to take our rig on a ferry and the price seems high but with nothing to compare it with it is hard to tell. Driving from

1,100 miles at maybe 13-15 mpg will cost about $175-$200 bucks but it will take you most of 3 days to get there.
For me, I would rather drive at my own pace.
Except for an hour at each end. there is not much too see out there
and a storm around the time of your crossing can make things less than fun.
Depends if you have the time; and money.

Thanks Diver, I tend to lean towards driving. We have the time and the money but it does seem expensive. When was the last time one of the ferries
had a major problem like capsizing or just plain sinking. I alway wonder about the maintenance issues in Mexico assuming the vessel was designed for
that kind of use in the first place.
It strikes me that if the price was more reasonable and one could be fairly confident in the safety issue that tourists with rigs would make more use
of the ferry. I understand that dogs must remain in the rig while crossing, maybe? However, I may be off base since I have no clue on the amount of

The crossing from Guaymas to Santa Roselia is only about 8 hours. They check the weather regularly and will not depart if it does not look good. The
last time I heard of a problem with the ferrys was the sinking of the Salvatiera outside La Paz but that was eons ago.DianaT - 5-22-2007 at 07:48 AM
I think the new ferries are a lot better. The one that sank was one of the old ones. When we took one of the old ones many years ago, John loved
reminding me the entire trip about the one that sank.
Dogs---We left our dogs in the truck on the Alaskan ferries, but we were able to visit and walk them every so often. Also, the big refrigerator
trucks plugged in. If I remember correctly, on the old Mexican ferries, they left their motors running.
About a year ago, some people who have made a DVD about RVing in Mexico took their dog on the ferry. The ferry told them they had kennels for the
dogs, but they said is was way too small. No way would they let them take the dog topside. They ended up compromising and they traded off sleeping
on the floor at the bottom of the stairs with the dog.
Don't know if anything has changed. I will say, that pulling into La Paz at sunrise is just a beautiful experience.

We took the ferry from Guymas to SR several years ago (maybe 1995). A Norte had been blowing and the sea was rough. People were sick and there was
vomit on the floors. All the crew did was throw sawdust on it, but the whole cabin reeked which only contributed to the seasickness.
To make matters even worse, when we got to Santa Rosalia, they could not go into the landing area because it was too rough. We circled outside of SR

They won't let dogs out of the vehicle area. They lock the vehicle area before the ships takes off. Sorry, your dogs will have to wait in the car.
But, being a night crossing, they sshould be fine. During the day might get too hot.
