Fishing Lures

Pompano - 5-9-2007 at 09:08 AM

Here is some fun for you fishermen.

Can you correctly list the common names (or nicknames) of these lures?

Example: "Mexican Flag" feather = green, white, red...colors of the national flag of Mexico.

The winner will get a big hug from deck hand, Buffy. Remember her, she's the one with the two big bass.

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 07:54 AM

HEY-HEY!!! That's not fair. I just told aquaholic the one about the Lazy Ike!!:tumble:

No. 2 - "Lazy Ike"..confirmed, but disqualified.

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 08:04 AM

This entry has been formally disqualified due to a sneaky manuever perpetuated by aquaholic to get me to divulge lure info in a messaging service. A low blow.

"Lazy Ike"

Lazy Ike Corporation
Founded 1897 Fort Dodge, Iowa

The Lazy Ike Corporation began in 1897 founded by Joseph Kautzky, an Austrian immigrant. The Kautzky Manufacturing Company, as it was originally named, started in the gunsmith business and over the years expanded into other lines of sporting goods.

Somewhere around the mid 1930's there was a fisherman in the Fort Dodge Iowa area named Newel Daniels that was hand carving what was to become the ike.

Apparently Joseph Kautzky Jr. saw Daniels fishing the lure and remarked "look at that lazy ike." From 1938 to 1940 the entire production was hand made by Daniels. When Daniels left the company in 1940 he turned over the rights to Kautzky.

Production then shifted to "Pop" Shuck who hand made them until around 1945 when lathe production began. Wood prodcution ceased in 1960 when the plastic version was made.

Kautzky produced many baits, the most famous being the Lazy Ike. The Lazy Ike and the other Kautzky lures are not generally considered to be collectible. However as the more famous lures are becoming a bit more scarce, the Lazy Ike Corporation and several other companies are starting to draw some attention. For me, it's not about value with these lures. I have fond memories of fishing the Lazy Ikes for northern and walleyes as a kid. (So did Nomad aquaholic, but he had forgotten!) This is the lure that got me started in lure collecting and I still collect and fish with these lures today.

...I'll withdraw from the competition to avoid any questions of duplicity... it was all that sneaky Pompano's fault...

...Baitcast...when was it you were at Henry's Lake??? I was just over the hill west of there in the Centennial Vally, Mt. for several years, way back...when the road finally opened in late spring, we would drive around the lake on our way to West for pizza and libations...

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 08:48 AM

Bedman...No. 9 is indeed a DareDevil, but you must state which model/color name...there are many variations. This one is a _______?

60 days

baitcast - 5-10-2007 at 09:09 AM

You only gave me credit for 1?.........Fished Henrys a number of times, the last time was 56 or 57 believe it or not,in the navy at the time and home on leave, lived in Boise.

Minnow - 5-10-2007 at 09:12 AM

No fair, I just went for the hard ones. I do believe Bedman got me on the Dare Devil.

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 09:17 AM

baitcast...you only had one post as a 'possible' guess...unless I missed another post somewhere? I need a cool one.

Minnow...the Dare Devil one is 'still alive'. I need the model name/type/nickname of that particular DareDevil. Example: a yellow DareDevil showing 5 red boxes is known as "Five of Diamonds". What is that one in the photo?

baitcast - 5-10-2007 at 09:33 AM

I know I,m rather old,and don,t get out much BUT I can still pitch a jig a block or so,and hold my own with the best,so with that in mind either gave me the credit I have coming or:fire:
The fix just might be in.

#5 looks like a Rapala Countdown

Glad someone got the Mepps Spinner.
That was the first one I recognized from my first tackle box.

.

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 06:05 PM

Congrats, Diver...Rapala 'Countdown' it is. You are on the board above.

Bedman - 5-10-2007 at 07:57 PM

Pompano,

I could only guess at the model and color. I do have one in my collection of old stuff (most all my "stuff" is Old stuff). In fact, I have most all that you have pictured. In a previous life I lived to fish. Was General manager of a major sporting goods chain, fished on the pro bass circuit (when most of those lures were new) and have lost more lures than stores stock. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for all of them.
The most popular of all the Daredevils and the staple of Eppinger's was/is the standard Red and White. My best guess would be either the Orange potato bug or Flo org w. black dots. I have no idea what the back side color is.

Bedman

Pompano - 5-10-2007 at 08:47 PM

Bedman gets another point! The 'Potato Bug' is correcto. Point entered.

Bedman, you had a job a lot of guys I know would have killed for...and fishing the pro circuit to boot. I know Al and Ron Linder (InFisherman magazine and Lindy tackle) from a walleye tournament on Lake Oahu in South Dakota a millenium ago. We had adjoining rooms at this lodge and we talked fishing way into the night..and were late to start the next morning! Almost got run over by the thundering herd at Table Rock during a bass tournament...I was sittiing quietly - 'brim' fishing. Fun times.

That daredevil is a real fish catcher. I have caught and released 15 dorado on a red/white from a paddy off Pt. Conception. My neighbor had a ball videoing the event...the fish would chase the spoon when it was flying through the air! That lure came a long way from Fargo to Mulege..and catches fish no matter the water or species. The Tater Bug is one of my favorites for trolling/casting to walleyes Up North.

RockhouseTom - 5-11-2007 at 07:19 PM

#18 Rebel Creek creature?
