Baja Home Movie 1952

Slowmad - 5-9-2007 at 03:35 PM

Ray Haller and crew in some vintage Baja footage.
Fun to ID spots you know.
Some decent beach fishing in the SOC in the day.
Must have been something when fresh water still poured in.

Hook - 5-9-2007 at 04:07 PM

Real nice. Looks like they were fishing in the boat off Punta Hornitos, maybe.

BajaWarrior - 5-9-2007 at 04:14 PM

Man I love that stuff. The truck though looks like the rig Mike McMahon (possibly second man shown at beginning of clip) used to drive in Baja with the Burro painted on the back.

That footage was a great find Slomad, thanks for sharing!

Slowmad - 5-9-2007 at 04:21 PM

Yeah, McMahon's rig is pretty epic.
He managed some solid trips without GPS and "the internets."

Paulina - 5-9-2007 at 04:22 PM

That was FANTASTIC! The sizes of those fish - caught right off the shore, unbelievable. How did you come across this footage?

P<*)))><

So whattayathink? Is that him and his rig in that footage?

Looking for the book in my storage shed,,

Adventures in Baja?

Mexitron - 5-9-2007 at 04:43 PM

Its MacMahon--he called his truck the "Burro" or "Little burro" or something like that...man did those guys get it good!

Bajagypsy - 5-9-2007 at 05:44 PM

That was great, thanx for posting the link.

David K - 5-9-2007 at 06:34 PM

Yup, Mike McMahan (with glasses) along with Ray Haller, Frank Alvarado and Ralph Hanc-ck are the guys doing the hunting and fishing... The book they wrote ('Baja California' c1953) is shown at the beginning of that movie made while researching the book.

The truck was a Willys-Overland 'Jeep' pickup and had been named 'La Burrita'.

David K - 5-9-2007 at 06:35 PM

By the way, thanks so very much for posting the link... That is a great one!

Mexitron - 5-9-2007 at 07:13 PM

Well, I was close on the name of the truck---wrong gender though!

Great link!

Steve in Oro Valley - 5-9-2007 at 08:58 PM

My numero uno baja book in my Baja librarary is the 1953 McMahon book which I found at Dawson's Bookshop in L. A. in 1990...

What a great home movie!

Steve in Oro Valley

David K - 5-10-2007 at 06:13 AM

Yup, a good one. The photos of old El Marmol and the onyx school house full of kids was from that book: http://vivabaja.com/marmol

Packoderm - 5-10-2007 at 06:48 AM

I paused the movie in spots in the beginning scenes with the trucks going by, and I have found that there is a Jeep and a Dodge pickup with a bobtail on back. The Dodge is like the old military style. Great movie!

jimgrms - 5-10-2007 at 07:58 AM

Baja before being paved, great fishing few people, great home movies
and those old military dodge trucks were almost un stopable; looks like that one was a old radio truckk ,Jim

Slowmad - 5-10-2007 at 08:41 AM

Yeah, that's a Dodge Power Wagon, not a Willys-Overland Jeep.
La Burrita was the name given to the camping body, not a truck.
Was on a Jeep initially, then towed on a trailer, then chassis-mounted on the Power Wagon shown throughout the movie.

BajaGeoff - 5-10-2007 at 10:52 AM

Great footage! Man were they pulling some big fish out!

I love seeing old movies like that.

Yes, you guys are correct... I am a big fan of Mike McMahan's books and maps and I was thinking of his FIRST 'La Burrita', the one in the movie was his second...

Great photos DK--I remember those too from my books...very inspiring to go build a custom rig!

David K - 5-10-2007 at 10:31 PM

I met both Mike and his brother Walter McMahan... some dynamic guys there!

BajaWarrior - 5-13-2007 at 02:30 PM

Just shared this video with my brother in law, a long time Baja Traveler along with his now 85 year young Father. They were truly impressed and it brought back a lot of memory's of fishing in Baja when my brother in law and his brothers were much younger.

Thanks for the post!

Lauriboats - 5-14-2007 at 07:33 PM

Very cool!

Wingnut - 5-15-2007 at 03:39 PM

Love the old pics. but in Burrita #4 I noticed they were hunting. Was that allowed south of the border back then? I did not know there was much call for hunting in Baja. Is that still allowed today? Anyone know?

Slowmad - 5-15-2007 at 04:26 PM

In 1952, the easiest route was to join a Mexican hunting club.
Nowadays there is a permiting process and, I believe, you need to hire a guide.
A search on this site or Google will bring you current.

Chorizo and breading-stuffed quail over a mesquite fire..
That's what I'm talkin' about.

debindesert - 5-16-2007 at 12:51 PM

It just doesn't get any better. Enjoyed it so much, posting a link on MySpace. Again, thanks.

Wingnut - 5-16-2007 at 03:13 PM

Thanks for the info, Slowmad. Better yet, Chorizo, Quail, Rattlesnake and Rabbit all in a white flour gravy....Hunter's stew, Baja style. YUM YUM.

crbeaton - 5-20-2007 at 07:43 PM

Hello. Just wanted to say "thanks" for the comments on the video. My grandfather was Ray Haller and I found the video at my parents house recently. I would love to find more footage but my mother claims that that is all there is. I'll keep looking! I remember Mike McMahon as a kid and have lots of pictures as well as my grandfathers diary of one of their trips to Baja. I'll try and post some pictures soon that you haven't seen.

If you do find more videos, I'm sure they would be a great hit on this site. Totally enjoyed the video..... Thanks for the posting. Ron:bounce:

Iflyfish - 6-4-2007 at 02:29 AM

Amazing footage. Thank you so much for sharing these incredible images with us. This is museum quality stuff. What a privilage to be able to join these adventuresome men in their Baja Epics. So much more there than the typical dead fish pictures of the time.

Thanks again,

Barry A. - 5-25-2008 at 09:24 AM

Fantastic!!!! the "good ol days" for sure!!!! my first Baja vehicle was a 1946 Dodge 4x4 Ambulance (a friends, not mine) similar to the one in this movie. I am sure that "Vince" of this board remembers that old Ambulance belonging to Chips.

Great movie-----------thanks.

BAJACAT - 5-25-2008 at 09:58 AM

La Panaderia(Bakery store) in Santa Rosalia...great video.I wonder what the videom from Baja will look in 2020..?

Gadget - 5-25-2008 at 02:52 PM

Video from Youtube. I'd say a super 8 was the original footage.

Man, I missed it. That was Baja in its prime.

That was fantastic Diver, I'm speachless.

This site is special because of posts like that.

Capt. George - 5-25-2008 at 02:59 PM

would have loved to been there...but then again, the areas I frequented in the Northeast during those years and beyond were also filled with bounty, beauty and freedom...

I am a lucky man, even though I got to Baja so late!

Vince - 5-25-2008 at 04:11 PM

Barry- I sure do remember that '46 ambulance of Chips'. In fact we had one also and before that we had a WWII Recon car, like a command car, my dad would take us down to northern Baja in. Great memories. One time he took us in the late '40's or early '50's to San Quentein, we towed a house trailer and bythe time we arrived, it was beat to a pulp. We found some fresh water lakes and had great fun catching bass using frogs as bait. Never did find those lakes again.

Barry A. - 5-25-2008 at 09:56 PM

Vince-------those "lakes" you refer to are a mystery to me also. Back in those days the old Military vehicles were about the only 4x4's available, that I know of. We sure had some great times with those old gas-burning beaters!! I remember your green jeep, also-----and the trip down to the "3 horrible grades" below PuerteCitos in the late 50's--------good times!! (tho crazy) Too bad we did not have a movie camera along. the diving was fun at the cove below the second grade (1st grade???)

The second guy in the beginning of the video is Mike McMahon. David K knows the names of the other guys in the video.

That was not super 8, didn't come out till later.

The big trip is in the book by Ralph Hanc-ck c1953 'Baja California' with Ray Haller, Mike McMahan, and Frank Alvarado. A Baja classic, for sure!

Just plain 8mm. Super 8 didn't come out till the late 50's or early 60's.

Baja 1952 video.

radiobirdman32 - 8-5-2008 at 12:36 PM

Wow, what a trip that video is. That is from way before my time but it sure jogged alot of memories. I am almost positive that the second guy in the beginning is Spence Rauber, one of the first people my family met when we came to Puertecitos in 1974 or so. He is still an avid pilot (last I heard) and now has a place in Rancho buena Vista where he loves to windsurf. I thought the first guy in the video was a guy named Wally but that is going way back and my memory is not accurate enough to recall names of all those great folks. Please correct me if anyone knows better but I spent a good deal of time with the Raubers up until maybe 6 or 8 years ago, so I would put money on the second guy being Spence. Thanks for the video. Armand

Go up to DavidK's post about 4 post up, he identifies each man in the beginning of the film.

BTW, welcome to the board.

Priceless!!!

Thanks

Vince - 8-6-2008 at 12:50 PM

I loved seeing the movie again, I recognize the beach as Coyote Beach, right down from I built my place 20 years later. When we visited the same beach by boat in the '60's, before the road, it took 2 hours for a truck to get from one end of the valley to the other (Rancho Coyote). Now it's about 2 minutes!

This one (1952) remains a favorite as well - and has been noted previously:

David K - 2-27-2009 at 08:53 AM

Thanks Doug... the second one is a classic video showing the four guys who made the classic Baja book possible (shown at the start).

The second man in the video is Mike McMahan who created the famous Baja wall maps and wrote 'There It Is: Baja!'/ 'My Adventures in Baja' (hard back/ paper back). One of the best books on Baja travel and information about Baja... from the pre-pavement days.

Paulina - 2-27-2009 at 08:54 AM

I would love to hear the original audio

pascuale - 8-1-2009 at 07:35 PM

Yeah, im not sure if it had sound originally. Can anyone tell where they are fishing? I like how the video tells a story but no sound is needed to tell it. It is so much different today but so similar at the same time. Loading up the vehicle and fishing gear, getting stuck in the mud, that first glimpse of the ocean. Meet the locals, go fishing with them, and have a blast all while consuming large quantities of Pacifico. I love it!

Howard - 8-1-2009 at 08:50 PM

Very enjoyable. I beleive some of the shots were from Bay of Conception

Thank you

David K - 8-1-2009 at 09:10 PM

The glory days of Baja when it was just being discovered... That trip is documented in the book (cover shown at the start) 'Baja California' and Mike McMahan is one of the members of that group... famous for the Baja wall maps and his own book 'There It Is: Baja!' ('Adventures in Baja').

This video has been on Nomad before... thanks for posting for those who haven't seen it. The first truck on dirt road scene is the top of the grade going down to El Rosario.

shari - 8-1-2009 at 09:14 PM

HISTORIC 1952 Baja Footage

Ken Cooke - 1-5-2012 at 03:11 PM

By CR Beaton
This is a short movie made by my grandfather "Ray Haller" in 1952. He and his friends made a trek down from California to Baja California to fish, hunt and explore this region.

[Edited on 1-6-2012 by BajaNomad]

David K - 1-5-2012 at 04:58 PM

Nice to see these again Ken... The second man at the start of the movie is Mike McMahan of the Baja wall maps and book fame. His daughter Ginger took over the updating of Tom Miller's 'The Baja Book' and published the 4th edition. Ginger's husband was Chuck Potter who published that book as well as Jimmy Smith's book... it's a small world of Baja lovers!
