Mulege River flood control is underway.

Pompano - 5-15-2007 at 12:29 PM

The riverside palms are being thinned and heavy brush cut away. The old river mudbars and small islands will be dredged out...thus giving the river a much less obstructed run to the ocean. The river will hopefully never flood as quickly as it did during the huge rainfall from Hurricane Juan...over 22 inches in 24 hours.

Thanks for the pictures.:bounce: How deep are they gonna dredge-out the river?:?:How far up towards the bridge?:?:

Hook - 5-15-2007 at 01:45 PM

Hey Pompano, what's the status of the old ramp by the lighthouse? Has it ever returned to useability?

I assume that the landspit between the north side of the river and El Sombrerito has reappeared and is driveable?

Cypress - 5-15-2007 at 01:50 PM

About digging-out the river.:D Where are they gonna put the "spoils"?:D

Natalie Ann - 5-15-2007 at 03:38 PM

Pompano -- I am amazed and pleased to see how wonderful it is looking again along the river. What a lot of work has taken place since I saw it in October! Thanks so much for the photos, the update.

Geez I hope it's wide/deep nuff fer my Magnum. Do you think it will mediate the river in a major flood? I was wondering if that was rumor. Back-hoe dredging? Well, it's a start.:smug:

Thanx for the update!

How come Greenpeace isn't stopping this dredging project??:bounce: I mean, if nature didn't want floods then the river would be naturally deep! What poor critters in the river are losing their homes to this destruction!!!:?::mad:;)

(this is only posted for thinking, not fighting)

Wow, David you're right. I'll foward this info to them immediately.
This could be a ruse to dredge for another cruise ship harbor at Mulege.
We'll have to get there a little earlier this time.

David K - 5-15-2007 at 06:19 PM

I really like your style amigo!!! I never even considered the cruise ship possibilities!!! LOL!!!

Minnow - 5-15-2007 at 06:36 PM

Could this be the start of the Mulege Marina and resort. I wonder what slip fees will be? Can I park one of those Seattle style houseboats there and set up shop?:bounce:

Bob H - 5-15-2007 at 06:42 PM

I bet a lot of junk (debris) from years past have been hauled out of that river during this project. Not just the trash from the storm, but old stuff that's probably been hanging in that water for years and years. It's nice to see that something good is coming to Mulege after that terrible storm and subsequent flooding.
Thanks a million for the photos Pompano. My wife and I are currently planning our October vacation which will include a few days in the Mulege area. Can't wait.
Thanks again,
Bob H

Sorry, cruise ships only! But don't worry there is plenty of water for all the golf courses that are planned.

Bob and Susan - 5-15-2007 at 06:59 PM

minnow...the marina will be at the place you're staying at for the fish tourny...

it will be nice to float boats into a safe place on the bay...with floating docks...

the "backhoe" on the river is actually an excavator...it's smaller but moves mud...

Bob and Susan - 5-15-2007 at 07:33 PM

that one is building the marina not cleaning the river...

now that marina will be a benifit to mulege too...
a safe spot to park the boat in the evening while on vacation
no launching in the morning...just go...

it too got stuck in the mud but the "boys" from the edijo came to the rescue and yanked her out...

these guys here can do ANYTHING....

Bob and Susan - 5-15-2007 at 07:35 PM

Bob and Susan - 5-15-2007 at 07:40 PM

DENNIS - 5-15-2007 at 07:50 PM

HO HO HO ......... That was a good one.

Years ago in Waikiki, Don Ho wanted to open a club called the Ho House. They wouldn't let him do it.

Not so long ago, somebody wanted to market a garden hoe called "The Black Hoe"...... black handle etc. They wouldn't let him do it.

Now, here comes Pompano with a Ho joke and what happens? They wouldn't let him do it.

Just kidden, Bob.......... I know you got it.

Bob and Susan - 5-16-2007 at 05:41 AM

dennis...

it went right over my head at first...
poor... Don Imus...

i guess i'm loosing my "edge" .... retirement sucks....NOT:lol:

bajabass - 5-16-2007 at 10:30 AM

I was in Mulege in October and was shocked by the devastation I saw in a drive by the south and north sides of the river. You folks are making great progress!!! I am leaving Ensenada on August 12th to drive to Cabo for my honeymoon. I will stop in Mulege for my halfway in one day lay-over.. It is great to hear how everybody has come together, not only in clean-up and repairs, but to actually make improvements!! Oh, how many hours from Mulege to Cabo?

Sharksbaja - 5-16-2007 at 11:01 AM

Yes, it is very cool how much has been done along the river. Nice to see locals cleaning up trash along there. I thought they were part of a chain gang.
The mangroves in some area got completely destroyed but I saw regrowth and sprouts coming up. We sure have a good view now.
The river bottom sure got a good scouring like Roger said. It don't stink no mo! When you look down into the water you can see many fish. It's nice to see that the "bones" are still around also.
I would be really amazed to see if they actually do build a malecon along the north bank. That would be a real change. Can't say right now if I like the idea or not.:?::?:
I kinda like that dirt road over there. Besides, at night the locals like to park along over there and crank up the music and fun.:wow: It's part of the natural atmosphere.
It's gonna take a while to make that channel boat-worthy up near our place but it would be nice to navigate at any tide!!!:bounce:

DTB - 5-16-2007 at 11:45 PM

DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THERE ARE PLACES TO LEASE TO BUT A TRAILER & BOAT IN MULEGE ? dtb

Cypress - 5-17-2007 at 11:14 AM

They ought to leave those mangrove islands alone!:o Guess the birds can always find someplace else to nest etc.

mtgoat666 - 5-17-2007 at 11:28 AM

pity to destroy the mangroves

fishbuck - 5-17-2007 at 12:18 PM

I read in one of the old Baja books of a really bike fish the lived in the river. Maybe giant Black Snook.
Are those big fish still in there?

Cypress - 5-17-2007 at 03:00 PM

fishbuck, No big fish in the river.:( Not many little fish either.:O for that matter there's not many fish, big or small, in the rio. There is a track "Ho" in the river.:D
