Next President of Mexico?

capn.sharky - 2-13-2004 at 08:19 AM

Sorry this is a tiny bit political, but while in Loreto I saw on television that Ms. Fox will run for the next Pres. of Mexico when hubby's turn runs out. This is quite a big thing in Mexico where we still have some of the macho mexicanos left alive. She has two opponents. There is alot of work being done in Puerto Escondido on the Escalera Marina --a pet project of Pres. El Zorro.

Next election

If the power brokers in Mexico decide to back Ms. Fox, she will be elected with a large majority.

It will most likely be Obrador, the current mayor of DF and Carlos Slim's boy. Fox's wife is now being touted to replace Obrador. I don't think she has a chance of being elected dog catcher.

Not so, the huge problem in Mexico is that there is SEVERAL powers fighting for control, there is no single group that controls power anymore, so Ms Fox is far from becoming president.

Mexicans dont want 6 more years of anybody that has anything to do with Fox, he has been a major dissapointment and people wont elect Martha based on her husbands work, the only reason why she has a shot is because of Fox, and ironically, also because of Fox she will not get elected, her husband is her biggest liability.

Mexico politics

Then, is it my understanding that you think PRI was 'good' for the people when it was controlling the country? I actually had thought that PAN would grab the country by it's "boot straps" and bring it into the 21st century. But what good can a president do, when he is controlled by those that still believe in pork barrells and keeping the population ignorant, barefoot and working for $5.00 a DAY wages.

The PRI was corrupt, now the PAn is as corrupt as the PRI was, only diference is that they pretend to be clean and everybody is not fooled, as far as i am concerned the PAN has done nothing for Mexico, in fact, some things have gotten worse.

Corruption

MrBillM - 3-17-2004 at 03:49 PM

The evils of political corruption are relative to their effect.
For us Gringo Residentes in Baja, the old Golden days were rife
with corruption and, at the same time, favorable to us. There
was a time when 70 % + of the income for Baja California was
generated by tourism and foreign residents. At that time, there
were never any requests/demands for documentation or obsession
with following rules. Any disagreements with officals were greased
with a "small bite" and everybody was happy. The same held true
for public services. I had a friend in Rosarito who was told there
was a 6-months wait for phone service, but payment of a $100.00
"tax" got it installed a week later. Now that government reform
has resulted in increased foreign business investment, we have
moved WAY DOWN on the ladder. Land costs are on a steep spiral
upward, along with everything else. Most prices are on the same
level as the E.U.A. While I'm happy for the increased prosperity
of the Mexican people, I am also sad to see the demise for us of
those Golden days.

Election prediction

thebajarunner - 3-17-2004 at 08:08 PM

You have a better chance of hitting your favorite number on the wheel at Bally's than you do predicting this one.
You are surely correct, the great expectations of PAN after PRI have gone by the wayside, just as each president since Luis Echevarria (the first pres. in office when I started going down to Baja) has given great promise to improve things, and all that improved was his own lifestyle.
Ask the lady who serves your next meal at a little cafecita next to the carreterra how things have improved..... NOT!!!!
Sad, so sad.

Baja Arriba!!

FOX changes

aldosalato - 3-17-2004 at 08:36 PM

I do not think that Fox has been all that bad.
He is keeping the economy in very sound conditions and I can see middle class growing and improving in many Mexican towns.
He is not perfect but still much better than many "presidents" and "prime ministers" all around the world..........
As a naturalized Mexican I am proud to live here with my family and see the change coming in the right direction for a much prosperous future.
Now it is time to somebody from the left to take the lead for necessary reform that could bring Mexico into the XXI century.
Mexico need responsible alternance for building a stable democracy.

Hey Sharkey!
Sorry I could not find your house in Loreto. Drove all around looking but left your location at Home on a paper>
There are 5 contenders for Governor of Baja Sur. Met one at the Hotel Oasi in the company of Bill and Gloria Davis, last name Parras. He has local connection in Loreto.

Talked to a friend in Mulege who said"they are all Corrupt".In Baja I have always stayed out of Politics.

Hope to make contact with you on my next trip in about 2 months. I am feeling Good. How about You?
