URGENT! - NOM-029-PESCA 2006 - For those of you who have not already heard, the Mexican Legislature has passed and the president has signed the
NOM-029-Pesca 2006 act which ostensibly was designed to protect shark and ray populations. This law has been in the works for years, was vetoed by the
past two Mexican presidents, but will take effect as we speak. In essence, it will allow long lining for sharks within 15 miles of the beach on both
the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific side. Currently, there are 250 new "shark" permits being issued out of the Cabo Pesca office alone. The problem is
that there will be no inspections or controls and there is no limit or observation of the by catch: marlin, dorado, sailfish, turtles, etc., The long
liners may retain/sell any by catch. Any of us who fish know that if you set up a couple of long liners on the 88 bank, or the Gordos, or the Thetis,
or the GoldenGate, or the Jaime, or the.., or the.., or the.., it won't take any time to wipe out the game fish populations.
There is a massive demonstration in Cabo (spearheaded by Minerva's Tackle and Pices Sportfishing,) and Sea Watch website has info as to who to write
letters. Sea Watch website is http://www.seawatch.org/index.php. On the right side of the page is the May 16th posting. click on " read more," then on make a difference if
