amir - 5-19-2007 at 02:34 PM

My guess is San Bartolo, because they are famous for their mango dulce. Somebody from there promised me a Keats Mango, but it hasn't made it to my garden in Todos Santos yet.
I've been through that road only a couple of times and the cemetery looks familiar. I never saw the Virgin's altar. I never take enough pictures - either there is no place to stop on the narrow roads, or I say: I'll come back another time with another vehicle and when I have more time...

--Amir

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 02:44 PM

Nicely done, Amir... you are correct, it's San Bartolo. And next time you cruise through, slow down and watch for this little store and restaurant on the left side of the road as you travel south. It's near the end of town and where the Aguilla bus driver stops to pick up his lunch. The Oasis has a limited choice of foods... but you'll be so hooked on the meat empanadas with salsa caliente that you'll keep going back for more. Honest.

You can also get your mango dulces there or in any of the tiendas just across the street. It's a nice little place to pull over, stretch your legs, see the scenery, get back on the highway with not much time lost.

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 02:46 PM

Ya know, I didn't arrange a prize for you Amir. Perhaps I could get the town ambulance driver to give you a ride back and forth to Los Barriles with the lights and siren on. ;D:biggrin::dudette:

san-bartolo.jpg - 49kB

Can I play too?

Paulina - 5-19-2007 at 03:51 PM

I can offer three prizes:

1. A pet stink bug.

2. An ice chest that comes with it's own guard dog.

3. A cowpattie pillow so comfy that it will even make a dog smile.

amir - 5-19-2007 at 04:02 PM

Wow! I can't believe I guessed right! An intuitive flash?...
A ride in that ambulance would be fun - unless it was strapped in the guerney in back...
I haven't toured Baja much at all, that's why I'm so hungry for all the pictures and info posted in these forums. The first time we came down, in Feb 2005, we flew to SJD, rented a car, and spent 2-3 days in several towns all the way up to Mulege. We had a friend that had moved down to San Bartolo, and she was the first person (one of two) we met in Baja on that trip that we knew. She gave us directions to San Bartolo and that pink building (Oasis) was the landmark! We waited there for her and had a snack. And guess what it was? You're right - meat empanadas! And now I find out, from you, that they are famous!! Little things like this is why I call the "magic" of Baja... It is all very serendipitous...
If you spent time there, maybe you know our friend, Bedo? Originally she was from Eugene, Oregon. She's Dutch, but now makes her home up the mountains uphill from San Bartolo.
It's been nice to connect with you in these forums. Our paths have already crossed several times... it's helping me grow little roots as we settle here...
Thank you!

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 04:03 PM

Of course you can play, Paulina. Those are great prizes. Now just post a photo of a "where is it"... and I'll do my best to win the stink bug. There's someone I'd like to share it with (evil grin).:dudette:

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 04:22 PM

omigosh Amir - you are friends with my dear friend Bedo. Well, this sets it... we'll definitely be meeting when next I am in the Sur (fingers crossed for soon). Here's a photo of her 'n me - sistahs. (for the rest of ya - Bedo's the blonde)

Ok, here's my entry....

Paulina - 5-19-2007 at 04:54 PM

Where is this Message Center located? (the message is held in place under the soda bottle)

Nena,
OMIGOSH is right! See what I mean by Serendipity and the "magic" of Baja? What are the chances that we would have met this way? This couldn't be just another coincidence... it has brought a tear to my eyes...

Paula - 5-19-2007 at 06:15 PM

Nice one Nena! I recognized the cemetary but not the shrine. And I didn't know that San Bartolo is famous for my favorite food! A stop I've wanted to make, and now I will for sure!

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 06:46 PM

Paulina... your spot... I've never seen that message board. Another clue por favor?

Amir - no place is more serendipitous than Baja - MHO.

Paula... it's mangos that San Bartolo is known for, and they are soooo delicious... but those of us who have eaten the empanadas will always get off the bus to get more.

Nena

Hint to Message Center location

Paulina - 5-19-2007 at 07:04 PM

It's on the Sea of Cortez side, as you head down this road you'll come to this Maytag...

From the inside of the washer you will see this view...

and you're almost there.

Paula - 5-19-2007 at 08:13 PM

Paulina, you sure got my attention with the Maytag! That long beach in the distance fits my mental image of San Francisquito, though I've never been there. Could the message center be on the road to San Francisquito?

Nena, you don't know how much I love mangos! Do they by any chance have sweet bean empanadas? Those are high on my list too.

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 08:26 PM

Yep, Paulina, on the way to San Francisquito was gonna be my guess. Hope we're right. If so... could we each please have a prize... and Paula, could I please have the stink bug? I really do have a person in mind to 'share' it with.:biggrin:

Paula, I love mangos that much too. Have to watch my consumption when I stay with Bedo, for I've been known to break out in a rash all over from them.
Regarding the bean empanadas... I do not remember them being mentioned. Very little variety here, although I think you might find chicken. Don't 'spose you have a recipe for the sweet bean stuff? The empanada part is easy.

Paula - 5-19-2007 at 09:11 PM

Nena, I think my dog would like the cowpie, so the stinkbug is all yours.

The beean filling-- my neighbor, who cooks without recipes, taught me to make it a couple years ago because I liked her empanadas so much. But I haven't made them yet. As I rememberit was 1 kilo cooked pinto beans, 1/2 kilo sugar, and lots of manteca-- she used the vegetable kind in the tube. You just cook and stir for a loooooong time until it is smooth and carmelized. Then make the flour tortillas, fill and seal them, and deep fry. Very sweet and tasty! When I make them, I'm gonna try using pie crust and baking them, my token gesture toward a healthier version:lol:

Natalie Ann - 5-19-2007 at 09:30 PM

That stinkbug! I'm so glad the cowpie works for you... oh I do hope we're right, Paula.;D

A cuppa fijoles and half a cuppa azucar??? Surely you jest?! If not, I'm gonna make 'em too. I have some of those pre-made pie crusts in the freezer, but I think they need to be fried up to bring out that 'real' empanada flavor... especially given the lack of lard in the 'tortilla'.:biggrin:

Nena,
Not to interrupt your interaction about the culinary aspects of empanadas, but what is "MHO"?

--Amir

Paulina - 5-20-2007 at 05:16 AM

Paula y Natalie Ann,

You are almost there! It is on the road to San Francisquito, the view from the Maytag is of La Boca Grande. The message center is at the turn off to a certain someone's house, and a very nice beach to catch Lenguado from...any more guesses?

I'm glad you worked out the prize situation. There's still the guard dog cooler for the last part of the question, and a bonus Sperm whale skull chair for the correct answer.

Paula - 5-20-2007 at 07:35 AM

Nena, it's been a long time, but I remember being astounded by the proportions. I'll try to ask Mirella today. What was important was to cook it long enought that it carmelizes. Mirella doesn't use written recipes, just does as she was taught, and she doesn't measure. Her family loves my chocolate chip cookies, so, we made them together, but they don't turn out well with her intuitive methods. I'm afraid my intuition might fail me on the empanadas!

Paulina, more than a chair, it's a throne!

Paulina - 5-20-2007 at 07:52 AM

I'm not guessing until I know what the prize is.....

Paulina - 5-20-2007 at 07:58 AM

The one in the middle might be half a Barndoor. It's hard to tell without the rest of the barn standing next to it.

Is that Homer, Alaska?

Skipjack Joe - 5-20-2007 at 08:34 AM

Well, I knew it wasn't Seward because that would be too obvious. This must be a trick question. Let me see ....

Hmmm. This is hard.

I'll bet it's close to this place though:

P.S. Yeah, that's me with the coffee grinder.

Natalie Ann - 5-20-2007 at 08:42 AM

Amir... MHO means 'my humble opinion'. You'll also see this written as IMHO, meaning 'in my humble opinion'.

Paula... I'll look forward to that sweet bean recipe. I do think, however, that it sounds like one that oughta be cooked up in one of those grande kettles over an open fire. Once during a visit to the rancho of a local San Bartolo family, I watched the milk and sugar being cooked up that way for cajeta. I believe they cooked and stirred for most of the day, then it went into the little molds... same as when they make the mango dulces. This stuff was good! Below is a photo of mi amigo checking on just finished candies.

Paulina... I'm stuck. Who lives just off the road to San Francisquito. Is it you? And btw, I really love your whale throne... believe that makes you the queen - no?

Pompano and Skipjack... You've left the country - did ya think we wouldn't notice? We are in Baja. How did you wander all the way up to Alaska? And why. ;D

No, Natalie Ann, it's not me and I'm definately not the Queen of anything, I wouldn't even qualify for Princess level! The whale chair belongs to the man who lives at this spot. I would love to own it and have just the place to put it!

P<*)))><

Natalie Ann - 5-20-2007 at 08:54 AM

So Pompano... the prize is for guessing what they call those fish? And just what is the prize? (gotta figure out if it's worth the internet research on that topic) Something to wash down yesterday's banana split would be nice. :)

Skipjack Joe - 5-20-2007 at 08:55 AM

Paulina, I've really enjoyed your sense of humor in this thread. Actually it's the best part about it. I don't recall if anyone's guessed your location but my guess is it's bahia san rafael.

Igor,

You win! The message center is at the turn off to San Rafael.
You can pick any of the prizes I offered above, except for the whale chair, I'm taking that back.:P

Paula and Natalie Ann,

Here is the house at the edge of the sea, with one of the best views as far as I'm concerned.

And this is Pancho. He's a very nice man who lives here. He always tries to give you something in exchange for your company. My Spanish is limited, so it's difficult for me to carry on a long conversation. One of my best memories is of a simple afternoon spent standing a short distance apart, casting out our lines to catch halibut, smiling and drinking Tecate. One time he gave me an instant coffee jar filled with seashells. Another time when we brought friends to meet him one spring break, he wouldn't let them leave without two plastic shopping bags of shells he'd collected. Two years ago Christmas we took him a tri-tip roast. As we were leaving he ran to the truck with my most special gift. He called it a "soap rock". I think it used to be a brick that spent quite a long time in the Sea of Cortez. I keep it in the bottom of my purse for good luck. He loved our bulldog Charlie and wanted a photo taken with him. This is the photo that we took back to him on another visit.

This is a fun game, thanks for letting me play.

So...where in Baja is this, then?

[Edited on 5-20-2007 by Pompano]

Yeah, I've heard there are similarities to the mindset both Baja and Alaska... never had the pleasure of a trip that far north. One day.
I had no idea halibut came that big. If it is the small ones that are good eating, whaddaya do with the BIG ones?

And what does the name of these fishies have to do with fishing 'for the hell of it'? I'm confused.:?::)

If the seas are rough, I call them "Hurl-ibut":barf:.

Natalie Ann - 5-20-2007 at 09:58 AM

Paulina....

Well, the world just gets smaller and smaller. Although I have never been to the place you showed us, I have met Pancho! He had come to Bahia Gonzaga with Antonio, for a reason I do not recall. Anyhoo... Antonio had given my friend his boat to use that day, and Pancho went along as 'guide'. (mostly he had the job of keeping the gasline attached to the engine - grin)

That day we meandered all around the Enchanted Islands, and stopped on one with a nice obsidian beach. As I explored a bit of the isla, Pancho spent the time using the handle end of the oar to dig deep into the glassy beach. When I returned he gave me a very special present... some small seashells that were exactly the lavendar pink color of the sunset as we headed back.

It was one of those perfect days. And right now I can see those small shells on my altar, each one filled with memories.

It's nice to know we know the same good people.
And serendipity once again.

Paulina, thank you for the pictures from up San Francisquito way, and the fun prizes. You are right -- it's a fun game to play. And I think you look like a princess in pink on that whale throne:yes:

I believe I've figured out how we went from baja to alaska. Lenguado is the spanish word for halibut. Halibut reminded Pompano of Alaska. Hence the picture of Seward, AK.

"the head bone's connected to the neck bone", etc, etc.

Not fair. I want the chair. You get to keep the washer.

On a bit more serious note (not too serious, don't want to get stuffy) : are those two white things on each side of you in the chair part of the skull? I was thinking they may be part of the bone structure that surrounds the eye socket. Either way it looks comfortable.

One of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discovered late in life I'm uncovering it's secrets. Could be a lifetime project, but I'm not complaining. This is the waterfront at Kodiak.

That's a fisherman's picture for sure. I look at that water and my pulse rises. I can almost visualize where the salmon are holding. Too small to be the Kenai River and larger than anything I saw on Kodiak. It's probably a fly in destination.

They do fish ... but not for fish. I'm told it has to do with cones and rods. :?:
