What's the #1 reason for people to visit Baja?

Cypress - 5-21-2007 at 11:39 AM

Just thinking about the many reasons that draw people to relocate/vacation in Baja?:?:

We went to a meeting last year for tour companies and they had a very interesting graph.
By income the number one category was food and drink, number 2 was golf:o, number 3 was sport fishing and number 4 was all other activities lumped together. I was surprised about golf being ahead of fishing but it is a total dollar amount.

bajajudy - 5-21-2007 at 12:20 PM

Oh Pomp
I love lefse too

DENNIS - 5-21-2007 at 12:28 PM

Curiosity and cheap pharmaceuticals...........and Pacifico.

Pick one.

Judy, was this survey Mexico specific, Baja specific, BajaSur specific or just tourism in general?

Cypress - 5-21-2007 at 12:31 PM

Jeez! If golf beats out fishing I'm a lost soul!:o

bajajudy - 5-21-2007 at 12:45 PM

Sorry my bad
It was just for Los Cabos

Paula - 5-21-2007 at 01:31 PM

I kinda thought that it was at least BajaSur specific. Just not that many golf courses north of the Cape.

I have seen a couple surveys on golf in the US in recent years and it has been a declining sport, even with the rise of the greatest player to have ever played. Ratings are generally up but players are down. Never did catch on huge with baby boomers and many listed it as being just too expensive.

Fishing aint cheap but atl least you can split expenses fairly easily.

Food and drink............what a shallow reason to go on vacation. I think it is more the cultural experience that INCLUDES eating and drinking.

read an article back in the seventies on "giant snook" in Mulege, never got it out of my mind........

came as soon as I could, 2000 and ain't looked back......and I still have not fished for snook! who needs em?

Oso - 5-21-2007 at 02:03 PM

Because it's there.

To be around more Californians....

Hook - 5-21-2007 at 02:15 PM

For me, it's the ocean on both sides, especially the Sea. Fishing is big, but the boating is just as big a draw.

Without that, I probably wouldnt visit Baja more than once every few years. The desert southwest in the US has some nice areas, too.

Don Alley - 5-21-2007 at 03:41 PM

I think #1 is a dumbass response to marketing, followed by lots of eating and drinking, in special habitats that insulate vacationers from local culture, such as huge hotels, nightclubs, and Authentic Mexican Villages

Fishing is high, but is being phased out. Fishermen are too demanding.

Maybe the prediction by a prominent fisherman resident of the East Cape will come true. He claimed a few years ago that Mexico will strip her oceans of fish and to pacify the resorts dependent on sportfishing, they will legalize gambling.

Actually, I think most people these days go to Baja their first time because someone they know has been down and told them how wonderful it is. Except for Cabo which is fed by travel agents and toursit brochures, as well. I have met so many people who heard great things about Baja and had to come check it out for themselves.

Why has anyone gone before them ?
Because it's there and all that ..... sunny, warm, beaches, cheaper, cool culture, great exploring, good fishing, surfing, windsurfing and kiting, boating, diving and snorkelling, great food, friendly people and more.

For the coastal camping. To my knowledge, Baja probably has the best coastal camping on the planet.

This sounds about right. To find a secluded beach. To finally be so alone so as to be lonely and truly glad to see people when I get back to a town.
Stars at night. Crystal blue water alive with fish.
The realization on one of my trips that "This is the California I've been looking for"

BAJACAT - 5-21-2007 at 09:21 PM

ALL OF THE ABOVE, AND MUCH MORE

fishing folks

baitcast - 5-22-2007 at 07:02 AM

From the very begining fishing was always the big draw for most and will be always as it is for me.

ursidae69 - 5-22-2007 at 08:57 AM

I come down to Baja for the absolute remoteness I can find there, the unque flora and fauna, and when I do encounter people, they are generally warm and kind.

burnrope - 5-22-2007 at 10:13 AM

My friends and I go down there to ride dirt bikes, drink tequilla and eat killer chow(Did you ever notice how hard it is to enjoy Mexican food in the States after eating Mexican food in Mexico?) and the friendliness of the people the further south you go.

Bajafun777 - 5-22-2007 at 10:47 AM

Stress Relief, as soonas I get to where I am going away from T.J. it's like all of the worries just don't matter:yes:. The time slow downs and I can take a breath of the Ocean air and the Sounds of Mexico just keep relieving me of the Stress from the States. Stress Relief is definately the number one reason and all else just falls into place as you experience Baja. Now, I am stressed thinking about why I am not in Baja now being un-stressed:(. Later- bajafun777

Bajagato - 5-22-2007 at 10:59 AM

Lots more than one reason.
The fishing, love to catch triggers from the shore!
The stars!!!
The friendly people, once we stopped at a pig farm by the side of the road ( amazed to see pigs) and the farmer was so nice and showed us around.
The warm sun and beautiful beaches.
The remoteness of lots of places we go.
The fish tacos and cold Pacificos from a road side stand.
need I say more?

Wingnut - 5-22-2007 at 02:46 PM

Baja is home! It has all the adventure, people, culture, sights, and sounds that I want. Each of us has a special reason for going to Baja, and of course we all love the BEER!!!!!

amir - 5-22-2007 at 02:59 PM

We didn't pick Baja. Baja picked us!

rdrrm8e - 5-23-2007 at 11:04 AM

I go there to get away from all the Mexicans in California...

Cypress - 5-23-2007 at 12:32 PM

Bernie, I'm not really qualified to say why or what draws most people to Baja.:( Will give it a try.:) Guess it's all about oceans, beaches, remote areas, friendly people and a combination of all.

backninedan - 5-23-2007 at 01:01 PM

I just took my dogs for a beach walk along the beach about 1/4 mile from my house in colonia zaragoza. Even this close to town I didnt see another person and all I could see north or south were pelicans and a panga in the distance. The dogs went for a swim and I tossed rocks in the water. Where can I go that is better than that??

In short, it means "my mistake".

It's not for our generation Capt. according to my teenage daughter after I tried to use the phrase.

All in the timing (and patience), my friend. Get the best of both worlds. The older the rugrats get the more exploring we'll get to do.
Plus, there are many vacous spaces inside my head alone.

Just jerkin' your chain, compa. But, given the size of your boca, I thought peace might be difficult at times. :P

This is just over the hill from where Woody caught those spotfins. He doesn't think I know where that is but I've sniffed it out.:lol:

I got that burn pursuing corbina in the surf. Should have paid more attention to the sun. It gets windy out there in the afternoon. I like sleeping on the cots in the open.

We had "monkey meat" for dinner, Cypress.
