Travel Times Laguna Chapala-Alphonsinas

Bobbuzz - 5-22-2007 at 06:57 PM

Will be traveling from San Quintin to Alphonsinas.
Looking for estimated driving times for SQ - L. Chapala turn off and from L. Chapala - Alphonsinas.
Will be driving full size Chevy PU 4WD. Don't mind increasing speed to float wash board.
Any one drove this strech recently?
Will add at least 1/2 hour for Coco's.
Any and all replys are welcome.

Thanks,

BajaBuzz

I never noted the time but could guess

SQ to Laguna Chapala turn - 2 hrs 30 min to 2:45

Laguna Chapala to Coco's - another half hour

Coco's to Alphonsinas - a little over an hour

Those times may be a bit on the long side, I'm used to driving an older Jeep.

The drive from the top of the hill out of El Rosario gets some pretty spectacular scenery - the prettiest of your route I'd say. Just racing on through and you'll miss a bunch.

I'd suggest topping off the gas tank at Catavina - just in case there is none available at Rancho Grande at Gonzaga.

It's spelled ALFONSINA'S people!

(that outburst was from 'Baja Spell Checker'!)

San Quintin to Laguna Chapala is 145 miles, allow 2.5-3 hrs. as there is a lot of curves south of El Rosario...

Chapala to Alfonsina's is 38 miles, allow 1 hour if you can keep up the speed on the washboard PLUS time to visit with Coco between Chapala and Gonzaga Bay, if he is there.

Boy, some of you must drive real fast! Last time out that road, it took us a lot longer---major washboard---and when we drove it right after it had been graded, we went fast enough to blow a tire.

I guess being retired means we get to enjoy something other than a huge cloud of dust.

You know, after reading jdtrotter's post, I got to thinking about it. I think I'll change my estimates. Add at least 45 minutes to Chapala, and add an hour from Highway 1 to Alfonsina's. Must have been the Margarita I was sipping on, and needing a second one at Alfonsina's.

Have to add even a little more time to stop and smell the ocotillos.:yes:

11/22/2006
Camalu 12:15 PM Took on four cases of Tecate and fuel.
Fuel stop and tacos in El Rosario.
Left turn at Chapala 4:20 PM
Flat tire 10 miles in. Tire change and beer break.
Arrived Alfonsinas 6:00 PM
This was only a six day trip with Gonzaga Bay as our destination so we pretty much drove
straight through.

Problem is, washboard roads are typical "5 or 50" roads. You "come up on plane" at 50, and smooth out, but anything above 5 and less than 50 kills you and your vehicle. So, what's a person to do?:lol:

I'm a believer in letting the suspension do the work - that's why I spent the money on it. Stopping to smell the flowers is another story.

P.S. Blowing a tire is just as easy at low speed as it is at high - just don't hit the stuff that will puncture it.
