BajaNomad

Whew, wake up call

rts551 - 5-25-2007 at 11:22 PM

I need to start this out by saying that I was sitting on the back porch in Tucson reflecting on a few things. I spend at least half the year in Punta Abreojos and am getiing ready to go back next week after a month or so here with family. Its a special time since my oldest son will be coming down with us for the first time in 25 years. It is also the first time we will not be bringing our friend of the last 12 years as she finally had to be put to sleep.

But tonight as I was reflecting.. and thinking of some of the more thought provoking (too say the least) posts that were on the board tonight... I heard A SHREAK from Molly the pup. I immeadiatly ran over to that area and heard that unmistakeable sound that you know if you have lived in SOCAL or Arizona... BZZZZZZZZZ

Well 3 hours later and Molly is still jumping around like a pup should so I guess she is OK... And since I was barefoot and didn't step on the little critter I guess I am OK..... But as we reflect ... just maybe we get too serious about ourselves sometimes. For me.. I will be glad to get back home to Abreojos.... With Molly and the rest of my family. Life is too short.

Rattlesnake snare .... PVC pipe (either 1/2 or 3/4)... Safety wire doubled and fed through the pipe. Widen the loop in the end...slip over coiled snakes head and pull tight... In this case it was real tight.

I have two. One about 6 foot long and this one which is about 3 foot.

So sad to hear about your loss.

It's the hardest thing to help a best friend go when it's time. Lived without dogs for 2 years and couldn't stand it. Got a pound puppy. Would not wait so long next time!

What a beautiful new addition to your home!

Seeing someone's special friend who is now at the Rainbow Bridge always makes me cry. Their unconditional love makes it difficult to let go.

I am so happy your new fur baby was not hurt. She is a really cute. After losing our last baby after 15 years, we swore there would be no more as we were just too heart-broken---didn't last long and now we have two who will also break our hearts someday.

We have had our pups vacinated for rattlesnake bite. While our vet says it is not the final answer, it does help. We are also taking them to Rattlesnake advoidance training --- something that some people think is crazy.

Have fun in Abreojos with the new little one.

Diane

Some snakes make good pets. This is Cleopatra - 13 feet, 85 pounds, we had her 3 years. Very mellow pet.

Cute little pup. I'll bet she's learned a valuable lesson early in life! You go girl!:)

Lets hope so. Every year we get a few Rattlesnakes around the house here in AZ and once in a while in Abreojos. The German Shepherd always shyed away from them anticipating danger. This Aussie (10 weeks old) is still a little too curious.

She was lucky.. Given her yelp, which could be heard by my wife in the house, she got hit... but it must have been a "dry" bite. Hoped she learned. Ive been walking around all day with my eyes glued to the ground.. Probably run into a tree branch now!

Yah, those snakes have varying amounts of venom. She IS lucky. Juvenile rattlers can have potent and ample venom. Particularly after they emerge from hibernation.

Venom is digestive not nuro, but would have ended your new best friends life. Glad you both avoided the visitor from the desert. I was not so lucky. The damage to body parts can change your life. One thing to note. His family lived in the area before yours. I hope the 12 incher in the pipe is not dead. Only resting ???
