Loreto Fish Report ???

Tin=Can - 5-27-2007 at 09:13 AM

Anyone have a report on fishing in Loreto ? Going to heading that way in 2 weeks. I know fishing can change overnight, just hope the Dorado might be around now. Also looking for anyone that might like to caravan down leaving on 6/13 - 6/15 ??
Thanks, Brian

Tin, you should certainly check in with FlyfishingPam - who owns Baja Big Fish - she has a great website and will post conditions periodically.

I am here in Loreto now and while folks are going out and enjoying the abundance of sea life (porpoises by the thousands, manta rays coming to check out the boats) - everyone is commenting that the water is cold for this time of year and the fishing "ain't that great." There is some fishing 50 miles from shore - but in a panga, that's a long ride.

hope this helps - and since there is nothing than better in life than a day on a boat - I would go aboard and see what happens.

Tight lines, as they say,

There are dorado, but they are still a ways out and scattered. In two weeks when you arrive, they should have moved much closer. It looks like another good season. The winds have also been kicking up a bit for the last week or so. As we slide more into the summer months, the winds will die allowing for better fishing, especially for you fly fisherman. Also, several pangeros are going to be setting bouys this week and that is always a plus. Good luck on your upcoming trip.

A couple of us nomads went out today, out past Carmen about 40 miles from Loreto. Found lots of seaweed patches, with a very few small dorado. Later we saw bigger schools of slightly larger fish. Bait was a problem, we caught BIG mackeral and the dodo's would chew them but not eat them. So we got a few for dinner, including one Bob got on a strip of squid, and I hooked but lost one throwing iron.

We only saw one tailing billfish, very small. But we saw a gazillion (okay, it was only a bazillion) jumping billfish of in the distance, in every direction, all day long. One jumping shark almost landed in the boat on the way in. And we saw whales too.

Got back and found out the yellowtail were chewing at San Bruno. And if you do inshore, light tackle of fly stuff, there were a ton of ladyfish at Coronado near the bait hole. If there are no roosterfish there, there may be soon.

Sorry, I didn't take any picks. Should have taken one wearing my new red Dodger cap. Thanks Lisa/Baja Girl!

Don,
Hay no problems, wear it in good health...I am leaving tomorrow en la manana...we had a wonderful, wonderful time...the malecon full of honking horns...damn, did I forget to put on a shirt again???

Go Dodgers...Long Live Loreto...again, fishing reports at the Oasis - not much today, but apparently some people found fish a ways away on Friday...even the restaurants had slim pickins for food.
