Good news from San Quintin

jandtbaja - 2-17-2004 at 04:57 PM

We have all read disturbing stories about problems for American tourist visiting The San Quintin area. Here is a story that you frequent travelers of Baja know is true more often then not. My wife and I have a place at Tripui, Puerto Escondido, south of Loreto, we drive there with our dogs, 5 or 6 times a year. San Quintin is a good first stop both directions. We regularly stay at the Motel Los Cirios. They are one block in off Hy1 on a side road just across (N. east) from the Chives Motel (There is a Furniture store on the North corner and a clinic half way up the side street. The motel has plenty of secure parking and recently remodeled rooms. 200p for single, 280p for two. Here is the story!
After a good night sleep we departed the Los Cirios at 5:30am the next morning for our run to Loreto, we stopped in Catavina for breakfast and was well past the BOLA turn off when my wife ask if I had seen her purse? No, I have not. So after pulling the car a part we had to back track in her mind when she had seen it last. Not sure! Then a great deal of panic sets in, but we decided to keep going on to Loreto where we could get some Spanish speaking help from friends. Luckily I had her passport and tourist visa in the car. We called the motel Los Cirios first! Oh si we have your bolsa, we will keep it safe till you pick it up. We advised we would be back for an overnight stay in 2 weeks. At the designated date we arrived, I explained in Spanglish about my wife's bolsa, oh sure just a minute. They present to her the purse, and proudly advise to check that everything was there, it was! Along with credit cards, drivers Lic. baby pictures and a lot of other stuff, there was over $1500 in cash. My wife digs into her cash stash and gives them $100 reward, No No we can't take, Oh yes you can! My wife gives her many many thanks and departs the office for the room before they could hand back the reward again. So if you are looking for a nice place to stay with good honest folks. The news is so often full of negative stories, it's great to hear one like this. There are lots of wonderfull people and when possible we should share their acts of honesty and kindness. Acts like this will bring many repeat customers. And it was good that your wife gave them a reward.

Thank's for posting this info. They deserve the business. A question, any problem with your dog(s) at the motel? We recently were shut down in Guerrero Negro where we had stayed for years due to travelling with our small dog. An alternative would be great.

Should be no Problem with a Dog. they had a Rott tied up to the door the last time I was there and I have always had my 15 year old black Lab with me. Good LuckSkeet/Loreto

Jerry, Thank you for the post. It is a nice feeling to know there are good people out there. I know many more than bad ones, they don't seem to get the recognition they truly deserve, You have put these people in the forefront. Thank you again.

Los Cirios Motel directions

I just returned from an up and back Loreto/Ensenada trip and on the strength of the returned purse story stayed overnight at the Los Cirios in San Quintin. (the landmark on Route 1, by the way, is Motel Chaves, not Chives, which is on the west side of Route 1 immediately north of the bridge). I found a clean, pleasant motel with a strong hot shower and, situated a long block off the highway, absolutely no road noise. My first visit at the Los Cirios was because of the purse story. My next will be for that reason and also because the Los Cirios is a nice motel and a pleasant way-station to and from the States.
