Mision Santa Maria, May 2007 (Part 3, the mission)

David K - 5-31-2007 at 06:54 PM

Continued from Part 2 at: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=24897

When the first site for this mission (at Calamajue) proved unfit due to bad water, Padre Arnes moved it here, a place known as Cabujacaamang by the natives. The first structures were probably made of palm logs... The Jesuits were removed from California (and the rest of New Spain) shortly after, in 1768. It was that year that the Franciscans built the adobe church and other quarters we see the remains of today.

The dry climate and remote location are why this much is still standing after nearly 240 years!

Okay Nomads, you have seen the mission site as we did on Saturday afternoon and Monday morning...

In the next part (#4), you will see the great oasis campsite that Roy (The Squarecircle) took us to... along with a BIG surprise visit from our 'neighbors', the Borrego family on Sunday morning!!! Part 4: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=24902

Fantastic, you really describe everything so that we are almost there ourselves. Great job!

Thank you... Baja is really a great place, like no other on earth... Please teach everyone to respect the past to remind us of how far we have come and of how little some things change, when preserved for the future!
