My Current Picture Resizer for Nomad Posting

It is free and gives good control over both display size (# of pixels) and compression after resizing (must be below 50Kb).

Here is an example of a 1.95 Mb file resized to 43Kb using 1024 x 768 pixels (Profile) with a Quality (compression) setting of 11%.

There is a great deal of degradation noticeable, but starting at 1.95GB, that's understandable. WHAT sort of camera settings are you using that results in a file that huge ?

Repeating something I had said as a result of watching "It's All Geek to me", unless you're blowing the thing up to poster size, anything beyond 4-5 megapixels is a waste of effort and memory.

I've been using Pentax ACDSee 2.0 to reduce photos in the 3-4MB range with no degradation.

Neal, the size of that image stretches the Nomad page off the screen... and is not as good looking as it could be, if smaller... I am not impressed... I still like the 'Paint' method YOU taught me!

I agree with David. Your original photo is surely a sharp, decent pic. but the posted image is painfull to look at unless it is viewed from across the room through old-man eyes and low expectations.

Here is a photo I've compressed with Photoshop for comparison -

The size should not cause the Nomad forum to go beyond the monitor frame... Try again guys and impress us with a reduced photo that you don't need to scroll to the right to see! Please and Thank you!

Lets try this
This is with 688 width and enough compression to get below the 50k max. Some climbers I took to Diablo Canyon earlier this year.

The default width is not set by the forum. It's set by your monitor size and your browser window. All off the photos posted above fit on my 21" LCD without scrolling horizontally.

Here is a 400x600 pixel image for those with small monitors. Is this acceptable? Thanks for giving me an excuse to post more pix!:D

Kneal.........your pic. looked just fine to me (but what the heck do I know?) what I do know is that was not #1 wife.....that was YOU, look at the pictrue again. She is much more beautiful than you, although that is had to top! WIW #16

I stand corrected Larry. A large photo will force the frame width beyond it's default. No problem for a big monitor though.

The picture was, indeed, too large for many monitors. Let's see how 800 x 600 looks (below - Quality 20%, file size 42 Kb.)


Someone U2Ued me asking how to use the program:

Double click VSO Image Resizer to open the "Open" menu screen. Use the left arrow or up arrow at the top of the screen to navigate to the picture you want to resize (usually in a folder in My Pictures)

Double Click the picture or file name of the picture.

Now you have the "Image Resizer " screen.

Set Profile and Resolution to "800 x 600"
Leave or set Filtering to "Best"
Leave or set Format to "as Original"
Set Quality % to whatever gives a resized picture of near but less than 50Kb file size when finished. Try 10 - 20.

Check box on "Keep aspect ratio of original"
Uncheck "Copy EXIF information"
Leave unchecked "Integrate watermark"
Leave Filename Mask" as is
Leave or set Action to "Create Copies"
Leave or set Destination to "Same Folder as Original"
Click OK, you will have a resized picture in the same file as the original picture.

Check resized picture file size by holding cursor over picture thumbnail or file in My Pictures

If over 50Kb, use a smaller number in Quality %.
If way under 50Kb, it will be a crappy picture so use a bigger number.

Once you have the right Quality % number for your regular file size, Click "Save as default" and you will not have to reset all those setting again, they will stick.

A photo reducing program I once had a setting 640 by 480 that I found to be about right - a least on my monitor. I use a laptop - no big monitors. This size never gave me bar at the bottom so I could go across to see all of Baja Nomad pages.
