Driving safely

dr650 - 6-7-2007 at 06:28 PM

Hi All,

I just got back from a few weeks down south en mi moto. Things went pretty good overall.

But, there was one instant when I almost got smacked just below Catavina by a got-to-get-there-now gringo in a maroon truck hauling what could have been a wind-surfing rig who decided to blindly pass someone else on a hill.

One moment, I'm cruising along loving life, and the next I'm staring at the face of a fool cresting the hill in my lane, bearing down on my life, and with no where for me to go. I hit the brakes, wobbled towards the edge, and was considering a launch into the cardon when he decided not to kill me and fell in back behind the leading car. It was a matter of a few feet.

I don't want to pontificate to the masses because I know that most here know the score, but I just want to remind people to take a deep breath and take it easy. You'll get there. It just takes a second to screw something up real bad.

Thanks for listening.

Oh Murph...Glad you made it man. Mine was two days ago when some air head pulled a Mexican left turn on a downtown street. Pulled into the right side parking and suddenly u-turned in front of my DR 650 drove onto the opposite sidewalk and parked. Fortunately by the time I could LEGALLY get back to her she was gone. Saved me a trip to jail.:fire:

Glad you had an otherwise good trip. Your DR was good to you?

Murphy ---

Glad you're here to post. It's happened to me as well. After the incident, I wondered what happened and how I escaped the head-on . I knew at the moment, that had that instant gone wrong, I would be someone else's memory.
Driving HWY 1 can be the road to Ball Bustin b-tchen Baja but, it can also be the road to disaster.
Be careful Amigo.

Yup, you are dead a long time, so take it easy on the curves!

Those straight-a-ways are not all that safe either (south of San Quintin)...

Good graphic, David

Looks like the mirrors are in peril there. Hope that's all.

Trust the trucks and buses more than some of the gringos.

Life comes smiling with close calls and crosses on the road. Do what you can, but in the end it's just a crap-shoot.

My DR ran like a champ. Not everybody's cup of meat, but for me, it's hard to beat the wind in your face, the sun on your back, the smells and scenery. Anyone who rides, knows.

Next time, though, I'm going to try to get off the pavement some and out into it ... along some dirt road heading up to who knows where to see who knows what.

All the best.
