Just heard on CNN last night that the passport requirements for air travel to mexico have been extended till after the summer (check state department
for specific date in September) ... the state departement has been highly inundated with requests for passports especially for people travelling over
the summer, and can't keep up, thus the extention. So a birth certificate and photo ID will get you there if you applied for your passport and still
haven't received it and can't get through to anyone with an answer for you!

Does anyone know if this applies to flying also or just driving?

YES it applies to flying, you will NOT need a passport to fly to Mexico this summer, it did not apply to driving before or now. those requirements go
into affect at a later date...
