The Culture of Dog Fights

Gypsy Jan - 6-10-2007 at 06:50 PM

This Gringa wants to understand.

Recently, I was driving through Rosarito and came up alongside a stake bed truck without any sides, just a bare bed.

Standing in the bed was a magnificent, well-conditioned Pit Bull. He was wearing a black leather bandolier harness with silver studs. The dog was not leashed or fastened to the vehicle; he simply maintained his position throughout the truck’s acceleration and deceleration by adjusting his balance.

My friend said, “That’s a dog for the fights.”

This is one of the very few things about Baja--

Baja Bernie - 6-10-2007 at 07:19 PM

that I have no desire to understand!

dog fighting

tehag - 6-10-2007 at 08:12 PM

Blood sport is very popular in Mexcio. Dog fights, c-ck fights, bull fights, all big hits.

What's to understand?

Dave - 6-10-2007 at 09:06 PM

Dog-fighting is illegal. Law is not enforced.

It's Mexico...Right Captain/Cardon Man? ;D

Two dogs fighting to the death and someone driving on the beach are 2 very different things. Futhermore, most Mexicans don't condone or engage in such fighting. Which is not the case with beach riding as we have discussed ad nauseam in another thread. Comparing the two issues is way off base.:barf:

Martyman - 6-11-2007 at 08:16 AM

Did I miss something? Who is comparing beaches and dogs?

Cardon Man - 6-11-2007 at 08:52 AM

Dave was making reference to another thread in "Baja Questions and Answers'.

backninedan - 6-11-2007 at 09:44 AM

Dog fighting is wrong, it's that simple. I don't care what country it is.

Cypress - 6-11-2007 at 11:35 AM

My doggie can whip you doggie. Whoopy do!

Halboo - 6-11-2007 at 01:22 PM

As Tehag said bloodsport is common;
The culture of dog fights = the culture of the macho

tripledigitken - 6-11-2007 at 01:27 PM

Now if we could just get the dogfight promoters to have the events on remote beaches accesible only by ATV's.

Strange Association

MrBillM - 6-11-2007 at 01:27 PM

Although I have little interest in Pro Football, it might be rational and understandable to equate aspects of that sport with Prize-Fighting or the like, but How it is possible to equate it with the training of Dogs to viciously tear each other apart ?

DENNIS - 6-11-2007 at 01:27 PM

Refering to dog fighting as a cultural trait is giving the same consideration to anybody demented enough to stuff their newborn into a blender.
How can people be this sick?

In Other Cultures..........

MrBillM - 6-11-2007 at 01:30 PM

Cannibalism is a dietary choice.

DENNIS - 6-11-2007 at 01:34 PM

There's probably still a cargo cult as well.

I wasn't comparing the two issues. Just making a comment on the level of general respect Mexicans have for the law.

But just for the sake of argument: ;D

One law deals with how people treat and respect animals, the other (in effect) deals with how people treat and respect each other.

While it is true that most Mexicans don't condone or engage in dog-fighting I would argue that millions of its populace both condone and enjoy bloodsports AND many more Mexicans both condone and engage in dog-fighting than ride ATV's on Mexico's beaches.

My advocacy is solely for the rule of law. I am convinced that all Mexico's trouble stems from its disrespect.

Not sure but I think Larry was referring to a certain professional quarterback from Atlanta.

North of the border the treatment of animals has become far more important to some than the treatment of humans.....

Still stand by my first comment.

I will add that the general breakdown, throughout the world, of the respect (warranted or not) for the law is rapidly changing the face of cultures and civilizations and not for the better.

To my way of thinking far too many of us forget that laws are/should be passed to protect and nurture civilizations and when they are ignored it is mostly at the expense of the helpless.

I would rather see a human run down in the street than a dog. I sincerely mean this.

flyfishinPam - 6-11-2007 at 02:45 PM

Bloodsport is enjoyed by many men and a few women all over the world even in the USA. Not condoning dog fighting but it doesn't only take place in Mexico.

Dennis

Baja Bernie - 6-11-2007 at 02:52 PM

That is a rather drastic example.........Would it change your mind if I told you they would be putting cats and dogs to sleep if their owners had not had them neutered or spayed and that to 'protect' the animal.

Forget it I would rather not see either run over or even have to pick up the mess that is left.

You should move to Las Vegas, where running down humans is almost a spectator sport:O:bounce::bounce:

DENNIS - 6-11-2007 at 03:18 PM

Bernie ---

Drastic? I think not.
Yes. Put them down in a humane, painless way. Overpopulation ruins their image.

Bancoduo ------
Do they handicap that? How about bleachers?

Do they have a special day for beach huggers:lol::lol::lol:

bancoduo - 6-11-2007 at 03:46 PM

Not yet. But if you want to be a participant go sit at a bus-stop:lol:

No, you don't.

A test:

Your dog and the child of a complete stranger are drowning. You only have time to save one.

Choose.

DENNIS - 6-11-2007 at 05:21 PM

Im not in the mood to take a test right now. Maybe later.

backninedan - 6-11-2007 at 05:23 PM

What kind of dog is it??

DENNIS - 6-11-2007 at 05:26 PM

If he gives up details, the test won't mean anything.

Making Choices

MrBillM - 6-11-2007 at 05:29 PM

I once had a discussion with a close friend regarding our VERY different attitudes regarding Dogs. I told him that, if I had to make that choice, I'd save my dogs before I'd save his kids. In fact, I said, I'd save HIS Dog before I'd save his kids. Of course, I'd try to do both in that order.

Luckily, I'll never have to make that choice. It would probably ruin the friendship.

Often, people will say when I'm indulging my dogs "Oh, they're just like kids". My response is always "NO, I've had both and I'll take the Dogs anyday".

oldhippie - 6-11-2007 at 05:53 PM

dog fighting in the United States:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19028969/site/newsweek/

http://www.hsus.org/hsus_field/animal_fighting_the_final_rou...

Unfortunately, there's a significant number of people all over the world that like violence. The first time I saw a pro football game live and up close I wondered out loud to my friend if they had a gladiator show at half time.

I was disappointed they didn't.

oldhippie - 6-11-2007 at 06:01 PM

Also about dogs, when I got married for a second time a few years back my new wife turned her pre-marriage grumbling about my dog into a "it's either me or the dog" proposition. I refused to say anything and walked away. I later told her she shouldn't ask me that again. She got the point. She now has her own dog and treats him as her child. Problem solved, almost. Now she's insisting that her dog is smarter than mine. Of course that's impossible. :smug:

backninedan - 6-11-2007 at 07:23 PM

I had that same choice with my first wife.....I still think of her sometimes..

Oso - 6-11-2007 at 08:40 PM

I grew up within a culture that appreciated both dog and c-ck fighting. I am no longer an aficionado of either, but I understand them. The fighting c-ck and the pit bull do not need to be "trained" to fight. They are bred to it, it is within their nature. I hope that someday it will be bred out of them. That will depend largely on our own evolution as as a species chosen to be custodians of this fragile planet.

You guys have the makings a great comedy team
