After a six-year campaign, conservationists are celebrating Tuesday's designation by Mexican President Felipe Calderón of the marine region as a naturally protected area, the Bahia de los Angeles Biosphere Reserve...

How does shark norma fit into this wonderful scenario??

I have a feeling it will be politely ignored by bottom-draggers.

What the designation does is allow a management plan to be developed that trumps all other rules and regulations. That plan could, like Loreto and Guadalupe Island, require a daily access fee for visitors. It could kick out the trawlers like Loreto's Marine Park. It could, like the Revillagigedo Islands, ban all fishing except for local residents.

There will be pressure to close at least part of the area to all fishing.

Don, I can live with that. There are thousands of spots to fish. If it kicks out the trawlers, what a blessing that would be.

What to watch out for is a combination of California style reserves and Mexican gillnetting. Where the prime hotspots are closed to fishing, and the best of the rest is open to gillnets.

Environmentalists are puishing the disputed hypothesis that closed areas will produce enough extra fish that move out of the reserves that it will be almost all the management you need.

Sounds like Loreto Bay sustainable water policy to me.

Seriously...after years of freshwater involvement through Trout Unlimited and others, I'm surprised that these kind of important management decisions will be driven by NGOs with little regard for sport fishing, if not outright opposed to the sport. Saltwater fishermen...they will sit it out.:no:

How will this affect Fishing in BOLA?

rdrrm8e - 6-11-2007 at 02:23 PM

For that matter..how will it affect 4 wheeling as it apears to be an inland reserve also?

Depends on the eventual management plan.

Gregg, why would you think it is cool that Mexico assigns spurious conservation status to anything they just sold to the slaughter house? The news for Loreto bay may just be that new fishing regulations are being propogated while they give permission to poison all living things in the bay with desal brine. That's not cool pal.

seems all the outside do-gooders are getting together and californacating mexico ?? ba carefull what you wish for better yet what you invite in to do your bidding
agendas anyone??

Russ - 6-23-2007 at 07:05 PM

It's a start! How about a torpedo for the longliner and it's 4 pongas anchored off the hotel at Punta Chivato tonight?

Don Alley - 6-23-2007 at 07:21 PM

Scam. The government gets to pose as being pro-environment, pro-conservation, while the semi-corporate environmental groups get to crow about how effective they are for their potential donors and grant application recipients.

Meanwhile, nothing really changes. Except maybe a few more nets, a few more longlines. And bigger developments.

No real, tough decisions have been made.

Hook - 6-23-2007 at 07:35 PM

Agree completely, Don.

Come on, Greg, take the green blinders off. Much of reality isnt visible with tunnel vision.

Wonder where the 2 million "endowment" came from? Maybe environmental organizations that supported shark norma for it's intrinsic conservation value?

Wristbands are coming to BOLA.

jerry - 6-23-2007 at 08:23 PM

the endowments come from the same place that they allways have frustrated people living like ants in big city apeasing there counsence by give money to save mexico from the mexicans

Foundation money. Like the Pew Charitable Trusts. Lots of oil company money (Sunoco) there. So, Surprise: more environmentalist money is being spent to stop sportfishing than to stop oil spills.
