February 11, 2004

TIJUANA, Mexico -- U.S. officials hope to make it a bit easier for people to cross into San Diego from Tijuana.

David Stewart of the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana said officials plan to open a Sentri lane for pedestrians at the San Ysidro border crossing. The Sentri program allows people who submit to a background check to receive passes that enable them to avoid waiting in the normal lines.

U.S. authorities also intend to add two new Sentri lanes for vehicles at the San Ysidro crossing. The two lanes currently open there often back up with long lines of cars waiting to cross.

Stewart said that the new lanes and pedestrian program should be established over the next few months.

How do you get a pass ? How much does it cost and what about others in your vehicle while you cross the border ? Thanks Paul

If someone is riding with us, we drop them and they walk across then we pick them up. We love it. We live 26 miles from the border and we go down to our casa by the sea and we go to TJ for eats, booze, pan, etc.

I maybe wrong but I don't believe Mexicali crossing or the east port have these lanes yet. It will be interesting for me when they put the lane in. It will be especially good for the summer time crossings...Thanks Paul

SENTRI--AVERAGE WAIT TIMES

Caarina - 3-2-2004 at 04:48 PM

We are considering moving to Playas de Tijuana and was wondering what the average wait time is at the SENTRI at San Ysidro.

Any information you all can provide would be helpful.

Can early morning commuters from Baja to San Diego save time by crossing at Otay mesa?:?:

I've been told the pass takes 2 months from one source (real estate agent) and 9 months from another. Any idea which is more likely? :light:
