Nigel Rickards

Oso - 6-16-2007 at 07:06 PM

My fellow U. de Las Americas alum and long time friend, Nigel Rickards, has left the planet. Ensenada, Punta Banda and Bufadora folk may remember him from his Spanish lessons etc. His widow, Maria, is currently attending affairs in Oceano, CA. Nigel was an organ donor so he is currently in a sort of medical salvage yard. What's left will be cremated and Maria will plan a party, rather than a wake, to celebrate his life. I'll post further details when I have them.

He was indeed. American mother, British dad, he grew up in England and never lost the accent. For a time he partnered with the Magliozzi brothers (Click and Clack on NPR's Car Talk) in an unusual sort of garage in Boston where you could rent a stall and work on your own car with their tools and advice. Unlike dropout me, Nigel actually graduated from U of A in Mexico City. Got his diploma and then proceeded to never do a damn thing with it. He'd had enough of working for other people in the corporate world before school. He had a generous heart and many, many friends but was a notorious penny-P-ncher. Didn't smoke or drink and absolutely refused to ever buy ice- "Pay money for frozen water?". He inherited a few bucks from his mom, was very careful with investments and occupied himself as a shade-tree mechanic. Sometime, I think in the 80's, he bought a house on top of a back hill in Ensenada that had been built by the Mexican general who gave the order to shoot down the students at Tlatelolco in '68. He divided his time between Ensenada and Oceano, CA. I'll definitely miss him.
