We need to furnish our new home in cabo this winter, any suggestions on how to go about this?

Fly to Guadalajara and take a trip to Tlaquepaque (close by).
Check out the beautiful arts and crafts and furnishings, and get the stuff shipped over to you in Cabo
You will save a bundle.
Or buy from the 'Orange County" price designer-merchants along the corridor ! (who get it from the same place !!)
My boss owns a casa in Cabo and did the Tlaquepaque thing - place looks incredible.

Not sure about Tlaquepaque... I have never been there; but, I have been to many towns in Jalisco and other mainland states that specialize in
woodworking. Many towns tend to specialize in certain crafts; shoes, boots, guitars, copper work, pottery, etc.. If you want the "authentic" look
for cheap heading to the mainland could be a good bet.
Here in Mexicali its been hard to find anything "authentic" at all, much less cheap. All the "athentic" stuff is shipped over the border into Yuma
and sold at a huge markup. I've seen some authentic looking stuff for sale around Ensenada; but, I suspect that most of it was shipped from the
mainland and the price has been marked up so the vendor could make a good profit.
If you do wind up making a trip to GDL; be sure to check out the town of Tequila while you are there!
Tequilla Town

I second the recommendations to go to Tequilla Town and Tlaquepaque...the tequilla tour is fun and informative and the tequilla shots served gratis
afterward in the hacienda courtyard made the day complete. I got to sling the pickaxe a couple of times to plant the baby agaves out in the field, and
came to a greater appreciation of the skill and hard work needed to grow this crop to harvest.

Tlaquapaque is no bargain any more. The merchants are passing along the costs of their high rent. Look to the towns outside Guadalajara where the
articles are made (Zacoalco, Jocotepec, Tonala, etc.) , then factor in the cost of having it shipped to La Paz, then trucked to Cabo.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't be worth it; the shopping in the area is great, but if your consideration is price, you may do just as well locally in
Cabo.

Furniture is not cheap anywhere anymore. Here's what I did:
Went to La Paz. Take a trailer with you. If you don't have one, borrow one. On HWY one, the south end of town, beyond the University you will see
furniture stores. This part of HWY one is called Carretera a Los Cabos and that's the direction it goes. One store in particular, Antares (Km.8.5)
actually makes the furniture right there. You can mill through their roadside open retail showrooms and also wander into the back where the place is
abuzz with activity. They are very nice people, too. The style is "Muebles Rusticos y Artesanias".
Another source, I discovered by accident. Have you seen those roadside junkyard flea markets? There is one on the highway in Santa Rosalia. Usually
junk is all you will find, but if you keep checking back you may find an occasional treasure. I found a roll-top desk there, and on another trip, a
big oak table with thick, plate glass inserts in the table top. It came with 4 matching chairs that had padded seats with tasteful fabric coverings. I
paid less than $100.00 each, for the roll-top and the table&chairs. It was a mix and match that worked.
Then it all got wiped out by the great Mulege River flood from Hurricane John.
Sorry, I meant for the story to be upbeat, and it was during the shopping and the four months I got to enjoy the furniture.

There are also segundo shops just outside of La Paz going either to Constitucion or Los Cabos. The ones on the road to Los Cabos have the best stuff
but you do have to shop them everytime you go to La Paz. There are several muebles rusticos shops in that area, several will build to order.
Although their prices have increased along with everything else, Artesanos, just outside of San Lucas going to San Jose has always had the best prices
on furniture. Take the exit right in front of the Country Club or just get on the frontage road just after you make that left(#1) going around San
Lucas from Todos Santos. They now have teak and other pieces besides the rustico stuff which looks nice but has small, fall out on your toes,
drawers.
Here in San Jose, we have Tienda 17 which is a consignment shop and has great stuff at times. Now is probably a good time because of the exit of the
snowbirds. If you are interested let me know and I will give you directions.

Dr Tom,
If you are willing to drive up to La Ribera and Los Barrilles, you can take
a look at my wife's 2 furniture stores: El Toro y La luna. She carries a huge
selection of furniture and decor items from all over the mainland. Mesquite
tables, chairs, a lot of hard to find items on your own, all at 2 locations.
Leather couches, recliners, the folks in our area seem to love it, and the pricing is less than in Cabo! She has been selling quite a bit to Cabo folks
now that the word is getting out. Too expensive to advertise in most of the
Cabo papers.

You might want to take a trip to Lake Patzcuaro and the villages surrounding, like Cuanajo or Tzintzuntzan where beautiful carved wooden furniture is
made. The prices are great, and I have shipped from there to Tijuana for not a lot of money.
