Anybody notice

Baja Bernie - 6-25-2007 at 08:44 PM

that the Donald Trump hype is changing the name of Baja California to just 'Baja' Mexico.

Don Jimmy thought 'The Baja' was terrible and he must be rolling over in his grave with that 'Baja Mexico' ringing in his ears.

Al G - 6-25-2007 at 08:51 PM

Now that is just wrong:mad:

fdt - 6-25-2007 at 08:56 PM

Good thing I hadn't made the check out, Donald would have had a fit, you know how he gets.........YOU'RE FIRED!

I was so disappointed/disgusted with how many people in Southern California did not know Baja California was in Mexico. The only person I did not try to enlighten was my 95 year old aunt who was very very relieved to hear that I was only moving to Baja California and not to Mexico.

sylens - 6-26-2007 at 12:09 PM

ah yes. my high school (in the los angeles area) wanted to mail me an invitation for our 40th reunion and i sent them my address which ends:

ensenada, baja california
CP 22847

when an alumna e-mailed me advising that the mail had been returned to her twice, i asked how she had written my address. are you ready?

ensenada, baja:tumble:
california 22847:spingrin:

wonder why i didn't get it in mexico:lol:

Got an "F" in Geography.:( Thought Baja was part of the state of California USA. CA is a beautiful state. Deserts. Mountains. Forests. Surf. Too many people. Did I say too many people? :?: Restrictions galore.:(

woody with a view - 6-26-2007 at 12:23 PM

"22847"

Quicksberg, VA

David K - 6-26-2007 at 02:37 PM

I can think of two examples where Mexicans in Baja California call there state just 'Baja' or 'The Baja' and I have seen Baja MANY times without California attached to it.

Mexicali Cerveza is labled to be from 'Baja, Mexico'

Baja Cactus, El Rosario slogan reads "where the Baja is much more than a dream"

You see, Baja California has become so well known, and the name 'Baja' so cool... that California no longer NEEDS to be attached to it!

Pops - 6-26-2007 at 02:45 PM

Kind 'o like "The River".......refering to the Colorado River.

Baja Mexico

MrBillM - 6-26-2007 at 05:09 PM

The use of "Baja Mexico" predates any usage by the Trump. Stroll through the boticas in San Felipe and count how many Shirts and Dresses say "San Felipe, Baja Mexico". Ditto for elsewhere, including Rancho Percebu, Baja Mexico. Plus the Billboards I've seen hustling property in "Baja Mexico".

The first places I ever saw it used were all by Mexicans. Don't blame this one on the Gringos.

Hey Bill

Baja Bernie - 6-26-2007 at 08:21 PM

Not blaming anyone or anything..................I do seem to remember that the word means something and it ain't below Mexico. I believe Baja Chiapas is down that way somewhere.

amir - 6-26-2007 at 11:13 PM

Down here the locals are very proud of their State, and they spell it out each time:

BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

The just "Baja" thing is a phenomenon in the northern part of the peninsula.
I think they should change it to BAJA CALIFORIA NORTE.

MrBillM - 6-27-2007 at 08:22 AM

If something as trivial, inconsequential and meaningless as "The Baja" or "Baja Mexico" can generate any degree of controversy and debate, it must mean that things otherwise are going pretty darn good.

All is Well. Good day, Mate.

Some of us who live here are quite satisfied with the state's name, Baja California.

If you want to change state names, start with East Virginia.

Baja, Mexico... I personally do not have a problem with this. Baja IS in Mexico, right?

You just don't get it David, it's marketting only, presented to the american public. Mexicans who are "Ignorant, uneducated, disrespectful and certainly not from Baja California would call it baja. I happen to know Antonio and I can not imagine him or any memeber of his family refering to either state or the peninsula as baja when in conversation with a fellow bajacaliforniano. If you look at any of his posts his location is El Rosario B.C. not just El Rosario B. Our web site is called ultimatebaja and you will notice it's not in spanish.

With Humble Respect

Baja Bernie - 6-27-2007 at 12:10 PM

It is Baja California and has been since there was an Alta California.

Baja California Sur and Baja California Norte are part of Baja California.................should we, gringos, be happy were Mexicans or others begin to call our States by another name......I think not!

And no, Baja California is not 'in' Mexico it is a part of same and adjacent to it.

Bill, your are right.............things are going 'boringly' well.

P.S, Calling it 'Baja' is like calling a friend by his/her first name..........not at all formal or disrepectful........but for for other to use the less formal would......well.......just not be good form.............Baja California in respect! Baja the place I love!

Jeez !

MrBillM - 6-27-2007 at 06:08 PM

Even the Elitists in San Francisco finally got over it being called "Frisco" (well, most of them did). Is this THAT Important ? Other than as an excuse for calling NorteAmericanos Dumb which CERTAIN Elitists seem to fit into any available argument.

Dumb as we are, we are also Numero Uno in the World and we can Nuke anybody who says different.

Has anybody other than a Gringo walked on the Face of the Moon ?

Bill

Baja Bernie - 6-27-2007 at 07:55 PM

I do believe that is as far off topic as I have ever 'noticed' you moving. Elitist indeed.

I speak of love and respect and that is your response.

I get it just fine Ferna... as you said... YOUR website is called Utimate Baja, not Ultimate Baja California! That's because 'Baja' can be perfectly understood as to what you refer WITHOUT 'California' being attached to it. LONG LIVE BAJA... VIVA BAJA!!!

Syrupy Sweet

MrBillM - 6-28-2007 at 09:29 AM

Forgive me for failing to recognize that, those who don't "Correctly" ID Baja California Mexico are guilty of Hate and Disrespect as opposed to those pure of thought who evidence their Love and Respect by doing so. I will be sure to point out to the next Mexican I see who uses the incorrect term that he or she is showing a lack of respect for their neighbors and themselves.

I'm Soooo Ashamed.

Mr. Bill, are you mexican?

FDT Assessments

Wow. And people say that I sweep with a Broad Brush.

So, FDT would be in agreement that I should lecture any Mexicans who, in their "ignorance, lack of education and disrespect" (his/her words) commit the unforgiveable BAJA or BAJA MEXICO Faux Pas ?

I do have one question, though. In the past, contributors to these threads have committed some pretty severe misspellings and misusages on an endless variety of subjects. Would we then have to describe them as equally "Ignorant, uneducated and disrespectful" ?

I'll be sure and quote FDT when doing so.

Once again Mr. Bill, if you are mexican, go right ahead but I doubt very much that you will encounter many mexicans refering to the peninsula or any of the 2 states as Baja alone. Now keep in mind that it is OK for you as an american to call it Baja, I can think of only very few mexicans that would have a problem with that, that is what probably made the Trump people call it Baja Mexico. If I am having a conversation with an american I would refer to it as baja, I am right now writing to you and I refer to the peninsula as baja and I have a web site in english that calls it baja.
If I am talking to a mexican in mexico in spanish and I am mexican also and I was to refer to Baja California as baja alone, I also should be considered ignorant, uneducated, disrespectfull and just plain stupid because in spanish baja means short, low, get down or come down.
Did an exersise with the kids and we tried to incorporate the word baja to sentences refering to baja california without using california and it's just funny and kinda dumb (remember it's all in spanish)
La Paz es de la baja = La Paz is from the low or low class
La Paz baja = La Paz lowers (incomplete) lowers what?
Tijuana baja mexico =tijuana lowers mexico:lol:
Ensenada es baja = Ensenada is short:lol:
Yo salgo a pescar en la baja = I fish in the low (low what, tide?)
Yo vivo en la baja = I live downstairs:lol:
As you can see, it just makes no sense.
So I doubt very much that you will have to lecture mexicans about calling it baja because I doubt that it would happen and if by any remote chance it does, IMHMO you're hanging out with the wrong croud.
I have baja fever but if I say it in spanish, I would not say
Yo tengo fiebre baja because it would mean I have low fever:lol:

Would this work?

No se baja a su nivel.:biggrin::biggrin:

This is a joke, Right ?

MrBillM - 6-28-2007 at 05:27 PM

Nobody could really take something this trivial seriously, could they ? If so, it surpasses any thing negative I could say.

In passing, though, let me ask one thing ? As an authority on what Mexicans say, think or do, how large is FDT's sample pool ? How many Million Mexicans are there ?

Be skeptical of anyone who Claims authority regarding the thinking of anyone other than the few dozen people they might know well. If that.

BTW, what's the thinking among "Those in the Know" regarding Jersey ? How about Philly ? These are important questions. Inquiring minds want to know.

Keep the Scheisse Flowing. It is fun.

You have made it so!

Baja Bernie - 6-28-2007 at 05:49 PM

Look at it another way...........Suppose I had asked if anyone noticed that someone had changed your handle from 'Mr. Bill M' to just 'BM'.......... no harm done right! It is done everyday....correct....they do it over in San Felipe and even in Baja Sur so what's the big deal.

Disrepectful! Someone just might find it so.........but then "Jeez'.............'What's the big deal" Elitist? Nah! quite basic and down to earth

So I guess you could say it is all in the point of view. Or, perhaps it would involve another sense.

When you're Right, you're Right !

MrBillM - 6-28-2007 at 05:58 PM

Well, Bernie, I have to agree. You're absolutely on target.

It IS just as meaningful.

Which is to say, WHO CARES ? Other than you and some other questionable characters who seem a little bit obsessive, that is.

BAJA, Mexico BAJA, Mexico BAJA, Mexico BAJA, Mexico BAJA, Mexico BAJA, Mexico

Call me Rude. It's OK.

Baja Bernie - 6-28-2007 at 06:22 PM

I know.

David K - 6-28-2007 at 07:11 PM

Actually I have personally heard Mexicans call their peninsula "La Baja"!!! One speaking English (to me) even said "Are you enjoying 'the Baja'?"

The word baja means lower... So, Baja California means Lower California, duh... BUT, if you just say 'Baja' when talking about the peninsula, it means the peninsula and not (just the word) 'Lower'.

It is just an abbreviation like L.A. means Los Angeles... 'Baja' (or to Canadians 'The Baja') means Baja California.

We are Baja Nomads... we know that doesn't translate to Lower Nomads, but to 'Nomads of the peninsula'! 'Baja California Nomads' is a bit too wordy, yes?

Well Said, David

MrBillM - 6-29-2007 at 08:47 AM

However, maybe "Lower" Nomads does apply at times.

I suppose my greatest regret, though, will be that Bernie is going to ignore me. I can't begin to comprehend how much that will affect my life and peace of mind. Going on will be difficult, but I will attempt to cope. Wish me Luck.
