Was wondering when you go past the checkpoint there if they are taking produce ect. brought form the states....?

in march when we went to see the whales we left everything in camp except for a cooler. it was the only thing in the back of the truck as we were gonna re-up on ice.

guess what they opened after i told them we had no fruits or veggies?

Yes they do. Sometimes they will take meat also.

I went through a couple weeks ago and I think it depends more on what momasita needs at home more than any regulation. For instance: limes ok, lemons no bueno; onions ok, potatoes esta no bueno, broccoli and lettuce were both ok. They didn't seem to care much about the meat but I didn't have much left by then. One thing I think that may have helped is that I keep just about everything in ziplocks to keep the melted ice off so they are able to inspect without really tearing things open.

I went through a few days ago. I guess they've been around a while. They asked if I had fruits or vegetables, to which I said no. They then opened my cooler half-full of the stuff. Fortunately, it was in colored tupperware at the bottom and they didn't look to close.

They did, however, charge us 20 pesos to drive over some sort of spray coming from the road. Anyone else get the 20 peso spray? Anyone get out of it? I was guessing it's DDT....

Hide it ANYWHERE but in the cooler and it has always worked for us.

Thanks...want to go past there but was hoping to bring my own food/produce with me.....maybe I will stick to SPAM....they weren't taking that where they?......:biggrin:

Jim,

If going south is your concern, might I suggest a surf spot to check out. As you approach GN Inspection station there is an airport on the west side of the road. You will see a road heading west to the Airport. Take it all the way to the beach, have a fun time. When you are done you don't have to go out to Mex 1, there are roads heading south that take to GN. If you don't want to travel the dirt roads go back the way you came and through the inspection station. Be sure to tip the fumagaro as you pass.:smug:

I have always been questioned as to whether I had meat or veggies from the North. I never do. I've also always been asked for my tourist visa.

We have only been asked about fruits and lost our bag of apples. Headed down soon and think we will take the airport road again. We did it last time---easy, and none of that nasty spraying on the tires.

The spraying used to be with a guy and a backpack tank, but now they have gone high-tech and they have a spray bar which the guy activates from the podium with a remote switch. Course all that high tech raised the price to twenty pesos.
You can tell them you have a medical problem with breathing and you want to pay the 20 pesos but they will usually not spray if you ask them,(be sure to cough a couple of times)

When we used to go a few years ago, we would pack a small extra bag of fruit. So we would hand those over, and they would never check the rest.
