Morro Bay 6/28 and 6/29

Ken Bondy - 7-1-2007 at 07:11 AM

I did two nice dives in Morro Bay last Thursday and Friday. Water was VERY green (visibility less than 10 feet) and still cold (53F) but there were lots of critters willing to be photographed:

Octopus in red bryozoan:

Another shy octopus:

Shrimp with Hermissenda nudibranch:

Shrimp:

Small shrimp in bottle:

Two Hermissenda nudibranchs on the head of a spider crab:

Hermit crab carrying two barnacles. Note the Acanthadoris nudibranch on the clam siphon, and the shrimp, in the lower right part of the frame:

Small crab in bryozoan:

Small sculpin with tiny anemone:

Tight shot of sculpin head:

Sure does look cold. Are those ice crystals on the sculpin's head? As ever, though, great shots!

Best yet, maybe. Thanks again.

Feels good to be "immersed" again in your photography; was running low and needed a Ken Bondy fix...

Always look forward to your pics----always are so worth seeing.

While we really were honored and valued the opportunity to join the pulpo trapper doing his daily job, I sure enjoyed your pictures of the octopus alive and well.

Great pictures Ken, again you the man. Ken any suggestions on where to take scuba diving classes in San Diego and about how long before you can go on short dives with a partner by the beach areas??? I have a buddy that was going to teach me when I retired around August of 2008 but he got shipped off to Iraq for another 18 months. He use to be in the Seals and then jumped into the Rangers as he said he was getting bored, yea right. Again, your pictures makes me want to get down there with my wife and both start looking at another world mother nature has to offer:tumble:. Later, bajafun777

Thanks Bajagypsy and bajafun777. bajafun777 there are lots of good dive shops in the San Diego area where you could get certified. See:

http://www.heff.net/scuba/

I recommend the Sport Chalet stores, I think they all have onsite pools and good instructors. I think you can get certified in as little as a month, including all the classes, pool sessions, and your checkout dives.

Thanks Ken, great site and my wife and I are pretty strong swimmers, so I look forward to getting wet and taking on new hobby. I know getting into this sport is expensive but once you have your equipment you should drop the costs each year except for your travels to the dive sites. Later----- bajafun777

Ken...as a arm chair wannabe...I want to thank you for sharing your adventures with some that want to dive (me) and the many that may never dive (me). It mean a lot:D

Ken, great stuff and thanks for sharing. It is amazing how much stuff in a small space as the shot with hermit crab, barnacles, shrimp, etc!

I can vouch for the Sport Chalet on Midway in San Diego. I took my lessons there and it was great. I was on a fast track because of upcoming trip to the Carib so I took a private lesson and got it all done in a couple of weeks.

Bajafun:

You are right expencive! But, I was turned on to the Play it Again Sports store in Ventura by MaryAnn Humfreville this spring, and being the mother of a growning boy (he needs new dive gear every season) it's the greatest find ever! Used, good quality stuff at 1/4 of the price, and when he grows out of it, you just bring it back, sell it, and get the next size up!!
