Getting to Cabo via bus or train

headnSouth - 7-5-2007 at 09:03 PM

Can anyone help me find the name or place where I can buy a one way ticket to LaPaz or Cabo from TJ?

I suggest a sleeper car on the "Sea of Cortez" Limited, also check out the club car.....:lol::lol:

Check out the search feature and look for the ABC bus

You will want The ABC bus from TJ to Cabo or La Paz.

In their own adorable way, these guys are trying to tell ya there isn't train service on the Baja Peninsula...bus is your only option of those you listed.

In the past... you could ride a train (in Baja) from:

Tijuana to Tecate

Tecate to Campo (still runs today with advanced reservations)

Mexicali to Sonora

Yep, not many trains left in Mexico.

A few tourist trains exist; but, there was never a line down the length of baja.

I'd recommend the bus if you are interested. I've traveled all over Mexico by the bus system and it is very efficent and a great way to go if you want to travel cheaply and meet the locals.

You should be able to catch a bus to Cabo from either TJ or Mexicali; although I would think TJ would be your better bet do to the main highway heading south from TJ.

I think the ride is at least 20 hours straight, so I would advice breaking up your journey with at least a stop or two.

Most long distance Mexican buses are very modern and more comfortable than your average airplane. The drivers for the long distance bus companies are some of the best drivers in Mexico. Spend the extra few pesos for the deluxe or first class bus if you have a choice. You will appreciate working AC, movies, and a clean bathroom on a long trip.

I recommend carrying your important stuff in a daypack onto the bus with you. You can bring a small cable lock to lock it to your seat if you are parranoid about it. I usually put mine by my feet. You will be asked to put your main luggage under the bus, so having a daypack for little things is very important.

Make sure you put some snacks, water, TP and a sweatshirt for the overzealous AC in your daypack. A camera and/or mp3 player is a good thing to have handy too.

If you are truely interested in train travel, check out the copper canyon train from Topolobampo to Chihuahua. Most people only ride it from Los Mochis to Creel and back, but the whole route is pretty. It is best traveled from west to east due to the fact you will travel though the most scenic areas during daylight hours, and the east to west train will travel the same area at night.

I think there is still a ferry that runs from Santa Rosalia in Baja to Topolobampo. Others here should know for sure about the ferry. Chihuahua is just south of Texas.. so it is a possible way to or from Baja depending on where you live.

Ferry Service

Yes, the ferry from Santa Rosalina to Topolobampo is in service, however it is small and feels unstable. There is a big modern ferry from La Paz to Topolobampo and also another that runs to Matazatlan .... Overnight cabins available as well as very comfortable common areas and you can have dinner as well. Enjoy your Vacation !!! :bounce: CaboRon

I've heard nothing but great reports about the ABC bus. From my observations on the road, I'd say these guys are great drivers who will get you there fast. And all the buses appear to be fairly new Volvos.

The place to buy your ticket is the central autobus station. Take a white Libre taxi to the station once you cross the border on foot.

There's an abc bus terminal just across the SY border in plaza viva. It's not necessary to go to the central camionera.
