Gabacho seems a bit more popular among Chicano vatos locos in the U.S., maybe because they are, in a way, gringos themselves.
I've been over the etymology of gringo many times. I think I've also mentioned that gabacho originated in Spain as a pejorative for the Basque
(Vascos), but is now pretty synonymous with gringo.

Has it again...............gringo seems to be a little friendlier and has nothing to do with skin color.
Gabacho is more negative, especially with the right inflection.....it does have to do with 'white' folks. I believe you could place trash in front of
white and come close to the slang meaning.
Me..........I have no problem with gringo because it is just shorthand for someone not of Mexican orgin..........again unless the tone is wrong.
Now if one of my Mexican friends called me gringo I would be peeed and that would prove to me that we were no longer friends.............unless the
correct tone were applied.
Tone or accent is more important when searching for meaning in Spanish............I think! Perhaps......as in P-nche (blank) no, let's not go there.
I don't speak much Spanish but I do understand a bit and I pick up on the inflection used.
