This photo was taken in the patio of the Serinidad Hotel. I think it is a Boatbilled Heron, can anyone confirm this?
I have never seen one of these guys before. There was a pair 15' above me as I watched them for a few minutes.

You're probably right, Ken... I don't know the boatbilled heron... but it sure looks like those plumed herons which are so plentiful around Mulege.
Real nice photo, it is.bajamigo - 7-10-2007 at 08:02 PM
My guess is that it's a yellow-crowned night heron. Boatbills have white stripe between the eyes but no "crown."

Hey Ken I'm pretty sure Bajamigo is correct. Here's a picture of the Boat Billed.

Vag and Bajamigo,
I think you guys have bagged it. The boatbilled was the closest in my Baja Bird book as it didn't have the Yellow... in it, but I have since looked
up the Yellow and it seems to be the match.
Thanks for the ID. With those orange eyes it is a hansom bird.

Ken, wish I could say I recognized the bird from personal experience. Alas, no. Instead I rely on a book called "Birds of Mexico and Central America,"
by Ber van Perlo, published by Princeton Illustrated Checklists.Wiles - 7-11-2007 at 09:32 AM
Yellow Crowned Night Heron
Good attitude...you're always looking up!!! YCNH's are very common in Baja.

Yellow Crown Night Herons are year round residents and reside through-out the entire Baja pennisula.
