From www.sanfelipe.com.mx:
"July 10 2007 - Major Naval Force stationed in San Felipe. The Government of Mexico has announced that a large team of Mexican Naval personnel are now
being stationed in San Felipe. Some 500 men will be housed in the town and will form a major task force for controlling the sea and the access routes
that the smugglers and drug traffickers use to move contraband and personnel towards the US border region. We also notice that there are patrols of
humvees and military personnel with powerful laser searchlights on the beaches during the night. This is a very welcome development and promises to
significantly deter the crime and drug trafficking along the shoreline and stop the flow of vehicles that drive along the beach into town without
lights during the wee hours of the morning."

And, on a Lighter Note:
"Boat sinking in the San Felipe harbor. Over the weekend a fishing boat sank near the entrance to the harbor. It was being repaired at the time and
carpentry work was underway to upgrade it. Possibly someone cut a hole in the wrong place. We will try to get a photograph and post it later. "

That should contribute mightily to the ambience of San Felipe.

Coming in Tuesday, our boat and others was inspected by the local Marinas at Loreto. They do that here every now and then.

Mr. Bill,
Do you happen to know where they are going to house the Sailors?
thebajarunner - 7-12-2007 at 04:04 PM
Earlier this year we went through a military checkpoint on the free road at La Fonda manned by "Men in Black" and they were all Mexican Navy.
I found that very interesting that it was a true Naval Blockade on a paved road... so to speak.
Clueless

Beats me where they're going to live. I just ran across the article on the San Felipe website this a.m. Hadn't heard anything before that.
For myself, I'm wondering what those "Laser" Searchlights are like ?

Keep your persianas down. You wouldn't like them.

Maybe that's where these guys are heading. They cruised by heading south on the Pacific side last week
A friend who's into these things says it a mini battleship called a "Corvette". Was use at the end of WWII and through the Korean war. From what we
could see of it, it looked like it was just off the assembly line. Very Clean.
BajaWarrior - 7-13-2007 at 03:48 PM
Yes, we saw it sitting off the entrance to San Quintin Bay last Friday.

Ex-USN fleet minesweepers, stripped of minesweeping and ASW gear

...had better be prepared for those Naval 'Midnight Maneuvers' down there on Shell Beach on his next visit...Humvees on the Horizon - could be the
title of a new Jimmy Buffett balad...
Humvees on the horizon
Strangers on the beach
San Felipe's been invaded
The Navy's come to preach.
Collecting guns and drugs
Their stated mission from afar
We deplete cerveza stocks
Loitering at the local bar.
The Fleet has landed uptown
With sailors marching clear
Senor's on their best behavior
Senorita.... another beer.
Humvees on the horizon
Strangers on the beach
San Felipe's been invaded
The Navy's come to preach.

funny, you'd think san felipe would be too busy for the smuggler. i thought they operated on deserted beaches in the middle of nowhere?
El Jefe - 7-14-2007 at 06:52 AM
Mexray, nice lyrics. So do you have a tune in mind or do we have to make up our own?
