NOMAD ALMANAC

oldjack - 7-13-2007 at 08:22 AM

I don't like to make work for the administrators... but because of the repetitive questions asked about Baja travel maybe a dynamic list could be generated using mileposts/junctions/towns/villages.... to wit: if you wanted the latest recommendations for places to stay between Ensenada and Guerro Negro you could look down the listing following the mileposts... entries made by NOMADS would keep the info current... listing the motels/hotels/cantinas/taco sources etc... other info could be serivices/gas/pangeros/

again I don't want to create work... but would like something better than the search where you don't always know what words to reference...

Enough of us drive up and down and there are those super explorers(DavidK) that should be able to make a great almanac in a short period of time...please give this some thought...

I do not agree...The system now keeps all of us sharp and keeps us learning. I do agree the search function takes some learning by trial and error...Maybe someone who uses it a lot could write a help file about their experiences.

The search is particularly difficult when places are not spelled correctly - por ejemplo, Guerrero Negro.

I have no ideal if it is possiable or not...(for this site)but a search engine should have a spell checker.............................................................I just realized we are talking about a reverse spell checker...Duh:lol:

The idea of an interactive map is noble. Perhaps I'm too much into my permanent vacation mode and missing a financial opportunity? Challenge would be how broad or granular to write and display info. Then there is the "too many chefs" theory.

Moon Handbook/Joe Cummings was my guide for my first Baja tour last year. Solid source for beginners of Baja and format via geographical location.

Nomad search engine works OK and the "red herring" info can be fun, too.

I've been considering the plus side of setting up what's known as a "wiki" specific to Baja - and for purposes similar to this - that could be edited by the visitors here.

I'd be interested in further input one way or another.

Thanks,

Something like a series of information pages ??
Directions, services, maps, border crossings, schedules, hospitals etc like Fred and some other boards ??

Sounds like a great idea especially since the amount of knowledge on Nomads is HUGE. I see the need for 1 or more coordinators who would accept recommended information and edit/catagorize as needed.

Yeah, that's what I thought too but alas, seems not too many are willing to contribute to an interactive map. Go figure? Good luck.

SHARKSBAJA MAP

Sharksbaja,
I opened up the link in your signature. Interesting map. If goal was simply to begin collecting wealth of info into a geographical context, that would be grand. Avoid perfection.

Just look at the hits Doug got on the Geo Visitors post. The visual stimulation of maps and pictures is quite different than a word search on "fishing inshore Mulege ceviche recipe water view invite other nomads cold beer".

Perhaps earn posting to the site to help credibility on restaurants, hotels, ...?

Hi Jack,

One of the three links at the bottom of my posts on Nomad is this one:
Find Baja Location Photos Fast: http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/tours

I made it so anyone can have a look at photos of places fast... without searching through all my trip reports or trip web pages!

I make these pages because Baja is so full of awesome, exotic sites... having a look at what might be seen there will help you decide if it is as interesting to you as it is to me.

Have a look at the Viva Baja Self Guided Tours web page... http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/tours

Doug: the wiki would be awesome. I see lots of possibilities.....and the wiki wars would be fun too:rolleyes:

whatever happened to just getting out there on a "rumor" or a "tip" and actually finding somewhere after a few wrong turns? info is cool, but soon you won't even have to cross the border. there will be webcams interlinked across the entire length of baja so you won't have to worry about federales, bugs, potholes, dog friendly hotels, etc.... just pop a cold pacifico and go to baja, without ever leaving your chair.

:light:

hotels and restraunts are understandable but inevitably there would be no adventure left if you could find out about EVERYTHING.... is it just me? it probably is....sorry!
