The Cross

bajajudy - 7-15-2007 at 12:45 PM

Any comments on this view of the cross that overlooks the marina?

looks like a debris magnet for the upcoming hurricane season!:light::?::lol:

DENNIS - 7-15-2007 at 12:53 PM

If that cross was in San Diego, they'd tell them to take it down.
Unbelievable, huh.

vandenberg - 7-15-2007 at 01:08 PM

Doesn't quite make the new world wonder list. Has to be bigger, like the Jesus statue in Rio.:lol:

DENNIS - 7-15-2007 at 01:16 PM

Or the Toll Road Jesus up by Puerto Nuevo.

bajajudy - 7-15-2007 at 01:26 PM

It is 25 meters tall.

vgabndo - 7-15-2007 at 02:18 PM

Dennis: It looks to me to have some pretty crafty sculptural work. My assumption is that it is on private property and was built using private funds. MEXICO has a much better record of separation of church and state than does the US.

When was the last time you saw a protest against religious symbolism in the US where the privately owned object was located on private property?

Note the absence of any state religion in the Mexican pledge to their flag.

Flag of México!
Legacy of our heroes,
Symbol of the unity
of our parents
and of our siblings,
we promise you to be always faithful
to the principles of liberty and justice
that make of our Homeland,
the independent,
humane and generous nation,
to which we dedicate
our existence.

VGA .....

Yeah..... I'd like to get a closer picture of the cross. Looks interesting. It's about the same height as Toll Road Chuy. 75 feet.

I get what you're saying about the differences between San Diego, Mexico, public and private property. The fight over the Mount Helix cross [ is that where it is? ] just seemed so ugly for some reason.

Skipjack Joe - 7-15-2007 at 03:33 PM

It's so jeux jeuxene.

baitcast - 7-15-2007 at 03:55 PM

What Joe said.

DENNIS - 7-15-2007 at 03:56 PM

Yeah.... What did Joe say?

bajamigo - 7-15-2007 at 04:04 PM

Maybe he said "jejune," which is not a nice thing to say about Chuy.

off by 25 miles.....'tis the mt. soledad cross that "they" want to bring down.....

DENNIS - 7-15-2007 at 07:11 PM

Oh well, I got the San Diego part right.

Love and Death

Skipjack Joe - 7-15-2007 at 07:32 PM

Reminded of a scene from Woody Allen's classic:

Allen: Don't you know that murder carries with it a moral imperative that transcends any notion of inherent universal free will?

Keaton: That is incredibly jejune.

Allen: That's jejune?

Keaton: Jejune!

Allen: You have the temerity to say that I'm talking to you out of jejunosity? I am one of the most june people in all of the Russias.

Well "they" did tell the City to take it down but "they" lost. It's still there as the symbol by which, long before the ACLU or its attack dog lawyers existed, our country chose to show the ultimate sacrifice a service man or woman made for the country. There's a cross on the marker of my fathers grave at Fort Rosecrans, who was a decorated WWII pilot and he was not religious.
Yes the cross is also the Christian symbol for the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for mankind, but that cross is part of a memorial that family members of all faiths, and no faith, put placks up to honor their loved ones.
An interesting side note you all may not know. Richard Paulson, the atheist who brought the 18+ years suit against the City of SD died 2 months after the final verdict was handed down and the memorial was deeded over to the Federal government of undiagnosed liver cancer.
Feel free to draw your own conclusions, I have.

bajadogs - 7-15-2007 at 09:56 PM

My relatives served in Viet Nam, Korea, WWII, WWI, Spanish American War, Civil War (both sides), Revolutionary War...

I'm pretty sure they were fighting for the flag, NOT the cross.

Separation of church and state protects both! Period!
Sorry to go off-topic.

bajadock - 7-15-2007 at 10:00 PM

Politics and religion,... great bedfellows. Bedgals? Bedbellows? Just wait 'til you see what's on top of my Mission style home.

Let me guess....a pentagram?

:?:

bajadock - 7-16-2007 at 09:43 AM

Hey, I'm telling BB. Only way you could have seen the pentagram is a rear view of avatar. Government sponsored exorcisms available in Ensenada?

May he rest in peace, Gadget. My Dad is at Fort Rosecrans too, and every time I go visit him my heart sings a little because of the beautiful spot. He is surrounded by his comrades, and I know he would be happy to know that.

Cypress - 7-16-2007 at 10:36 AM

Seems like the cross picture opened up a can of worms.

Judy,
I saw it (them), but was afraid to comment. There was the fear that if I were the only one who saw it (them) that I would be struck dead by a bolt of lightning. Short of that I didn't want
to incur the pious stick-in-the-eye from mere mortals. :O

bajajudy - 7-16-2007 at 01:06 PM

I think that the cross is ugly anyway and I cant imagine that the people of La Playa like it but I havent really discussed it with any of them. I ride by it at least 2 times a day and I kept seeing the b00bs and thighs and wasnt sure if it was because I didnt like it or if others would also see it.
That is my story and I am sticking to it!;D

Doesn't take much, does it.
Do you think Chuy was a hermaphrodite?

Sallysouth - 7-16-2007 at 09:36 PM

Geez, IMO, that thing is "butt ugly", only it is facing the wrong way!(butt).Who designed that monstrosity anyway????:?:

Judy

Baja Bernie - 7-17-2007 at 07:59 AM

Would you have a view of the beautiful side?

Cypress - 7-17-2007 at 12:21 PM

Butt ugly? All butts aren't what I'd call "ugly". Have seen a few that were downright nice!:bounce:

vandenberg - 7-17-2007 at 12:41 PM

Yeah Judy,

That pic doesn't live up to the standard of your usual pics. Could you post some others with a little more detail and a feel for its size.:?::?:

bajajudy - 7-17-2007 at 02:05 PM

Ok remember it is 25 meters(82') high

Jeez Vandy, picky picky:P

Good shot. The outhouse gives it scale.

I personally believe that we have beaten this dead horse enough.
However here it is in all its glory from every angle and with different cameras.

I'm sure Shari will agree.

bajajudy - 7-17-2007 at 03:35 PM

That erect equipment is for the bridge construction. Just heard today that the Feds shut the bridge people down for lack of permits.....I thought that the feds were part of this project. It is a real shame too as they were moving along very fast.
Looks like we will become an island again this year if there is a big storm:smug:

Judy

Baja Bernie - 7-17-2007 at 03:38 PM

I asked........Thanks. The quality and perspective is no where near your normally great composition.

Someone worked very hard on that object and I am sure that he/she thought it really 'was' beautiful. Guess you could say that beauty is in the eye of the doer.

Sure hope you go back to taking pictures of things 'you' consider beautiful and ones that we all can enjoy.

bajajudy - 7-17-2007 at 03:55 PM

Migo
Well heck lets continue to beat the poor thing then.

Bernie, I am sure that the sculptor made it to be beautiful and who knows maybe it is.
As for the quality, the last one was taken with my Nikon D80 and all the others with the sony cybershot...not too happy with them either.

toneart - 7-20-2007 at 04:20 PM

Now I can see, it really is a sculpture; a work of art; inspired, no doubt. Too bad his inspiration doesn't thrill the rest of us. If it were put to music, it would be Holy (holely) Heavy Metal Jesus Gospel.. Now git up there and clap your hands, y'awl!:barf:

bajamigo - 7-20-2007 at 04:25 PM

Darth Vader on the Cross? Didn't know.

DENNIS - 7-20-2007 at 04:30 PM

Maybe it's an antenna that looks like a cross. In San Diego, there are antennae that look like palm trees.

oldhippie - 7-20-2007 at 05:07 PM

palm fronds might work
