Where do you like to stay in La Paz

Boshvideo - 7-15-2007 at 02:32 PM

Tell me where you love to stay and why.
many thanks

oxxo - 7-15-2007 at 02:52 PM

On my boat at Marina Costa Baja. Nice & clean surroundings, cooler than in town, and the islands are quicker to get to.

Hotel Gardenias
Aquiles Serdan y V. Guerrero
La Paz
phone: 612-122-30-88
email: www.hotelgardenias.com.mx

Mexican owned, clean and affordable, air cond, swimming pool, mattresses/pillows all new last year, reasonably secure parking, very very nice folks. Highly recommended.

Oh yeah - word to the wise: do not eat there... won't poison you or anything, just not good. Walk a coupla blocks to the downtown/malecon area for some really good food.

Alan - 7-15-2007 at 03:39 PM

Wherever you decide on I would make sure it is NOT on the Malecon. Definitely there is an increase in trafficon weekend evenings but it seems every night is cruise night on the Malecon.

Hahaha.... that's as good a food review as I've ever seen.

High end-- Los Arcos, Cabanas section (losarcos.com)

Low end-- Lorimar, a block uphill from Appleby's on the malecon. No frills, clean Still $35 per night as far as I know.

Slightly bizarre and very cheap-- Hotel Pekin, a ways north on the malecon.

Anything come to mind between High end and bizarre?

vandenberg - 7-15-2007 at 04:34 PM

Paula's choice, Cabanas de Los Arcos, is a good one. Pretty much in the heart of town with nice grounds, Easy walking to everywhere downtown. For years now, we have been staying at the El Moro, a small motel on the end of the Malecon. Beautiful grounds and good restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Used to be reasonable ,but prices have gone up the last few years. But a nice place if you're not too budget minded. Our favorite by far.

Hey, Bosh

bajaguy - 7-15-2007 at 04:37 PM

Ya want to be a REAL Nomad, stay at bazarre.....and give us a trip report......with photos!!!!!:lol::lol:

Ken Bondy - 7-15-2007 at 04:43 PM

I think I am in the minority, but I prefer the main building of Los Arcos to the cabanas. A few years ago we rented one of the condominiums in the tower at La Concha for a week, it was spectacular. For double bizarre, the Yeneka on Calle Madero in town. ++Ken++
PS we like El Moro also, used to be one of the best restaurants in town.
PSPS speaking of restaurants, anybody been to La Pazta recently? Reviews?

That would be Hotel Gardenias... $40/nite for one... $42 for two... $45 for the family.

Get a top floor room - either end but facing the water. You get the breeze. And they'll give you limitless towels for the beach or pool without making you slit a vein and sign in blood to return them.

Natalie Ann - 7-15-2007 at 06:04 PM

Ken - It's been perhaps 10 months since I've eaten at La Pazta. The food was exactly as good as always and the service excellent.

Nena

Bob and Susan - 7-15-2007 at 06:11 PM

Ken Bondy - 7-15-2007 at 06:11 PM

Gracias Nena. That's good to hear. La Pazta is a longtime favorite of mine.

A "favority" of mine, too, Ken.:dudette:

Bob and Susan - 7-15-2007 at 06:21 PM

club marlin...check it out
Km. 14.5 North Highway El Centenario

ask if they still have a room for rent
away from the crowd...you'll see
la paz is like philly at rush hour
pool
quiet
safe
GREAT restraunt
small

Natalie Ann - 7-15-2007 at 06:26 PM

Yeah, I second Club Marlin. They also have a couple of separate studio-type places that they rent to folks with pets. Reasonable prices, too. Like Bob and Susan said, the food is yum! - and they make a great salad.

That's even better than a "favorite" :)

Barry A. - 7-15-2007 at 08:27 PM

I cast another vote for Cabanas de los Arcos----------and I do not consider it "high end" tho-------never paid more than $80 a night for your own casa with fireplace and pool beside it. Stayed there many, many times over the years.

danaeb - 7-15-2007 at 09:13 PM

I'm obviously in the minority here but I like La Concha, simply for its pretty little beach. It's a classic Mexican beach hotel. The food isn't remarkable, but breakfast buffet outdoors next to the pool is nice.

Don Alley - 7-15-2007 at 09:25 PM

For bizarre, try Yeneka downtown.

We like Hacienda del Cortez, formerly Engleberts, for dog friendly, though usually we like to be walking distance to downtown. Unfortunately, the Hacienda was to be closed by now, then demolished for condos.

Gardenias, as described by Natalie Ann. Mexican, clean, moderately priced.

Ate at La Pazta in March-- it was wonderful! Best thing to do in La Paz-- 1dinner there, and one at 3 virgenes.

We stayed at Mediteraneo, the hotel adjoining La Pazta recently. Liked it, but not a great value at $60.

bajajudy - 7-15-2007 at 09:49 PM

Las Cabanas
ask for a room on the left side walking toward the pool/. much quieter...or is that more quiet....where is bajalera when we need her.
This is my favorite place to stay, if I dont have my Mexican mutts with me! still has the old baja feeling

Los Arcos price

Stickers - 7-15-2007 at 10:12 PM

"Another vote for Los Arcos Cabanas"

I haven't stayed there for many years but checked the prices when I walked by the hotel recently. They had the prices posted in the loby.
Approximately + - $120 U.S. for either a cabana or a deluxe room in the hotel. Probably negotiable depending on many variables. YMMV

Paula - 7-16-2007 at 06:13 AM

An FM-3 gets you a substantial discount at Los Arcos.

TMW - 7-16-2007 at 07:05 AM

I prefer the Los Arcos third floor overlooking the malecon. Great view overlooking the bay, especially at xmas when the sailboats have their lights on at night. Maybe a bit pricey but for a couple of days it's worth it.

805gregg - 7-16-2007 at 08:55 AM

Great responses, I'll be in La Paz in about 3 weeks, now I have a good list for food and lodging. I havn't been to La Paz since 1973 probable changed some.

bajajudy - 7-16-2007 at 10:05 AM

Another good place is El Moro. They take dogs, usually.

msrla - 7-16-2007 at 01:55 PM

If you want something in town, definately Los Arcos...

Our fave is La Concha.... great beach, great pool, great place!

Sorry.... what would that be?

tripledigitken - 7-16-2007 at 02:24 PM

My vote is for Los Arcos. I prefer the side facing into the courtyard, Malecon at night is very noisy. The food is good as are the Margaritas.

Can't comment on the cabana's as I haven't stayed there.

Both provide a fenced "guarded" parking lot. Didn't see a guard, but had no problems with our group of 3 motorcycles.

I'll be back for a visit in October!

Ken

View from the lobby facing out to the Malecon. Chairs are a nice place to nurse a beverage and enjoy the world going by.

The unknowns in Mexico are limitless!

fm-3's, fideos, property taxes, utility bills, environmental impact studies, and on and on........................

You could write a philosophy treatise on that statement but, it would be wordless.

????Was I just "dissed" with that one???? Explain please.

Paula - 7-16-2007 at 04:09 PM

Bosh, an FM-3 is resident tourist status in Mexico. It means you live here, at least part time. Didn't mean to confuse, that info was for people who have them:saint:

vandenberg - 7-16-2007 at 04:17 PM

Most places give you at least a 20% discount if you have a FM3. Wouldn't hurt to claim residency in Loreto and having forgotten your FM 3.:light::light::?::?::?::.
Worth a try if you have some larceny in your soul:P:P
All they can do is refuse and then it's time to raise a little hell:lol::lol::lol:

BMG - 7-16-2007 at 08:27 PM

We stayed at the Casabuena towards the end of May / beginning of June this year and enjoyed it. Great parking inside their compound. They do discount for longer stays. Email Milton for more info.

Also stayed at the El Moro this year, 3 weeks in January and 4 in May. The rooms can be a little noisy depending on your neighbors. Mostly slamming doors. One night the management rented the pool area out for a teenage party that would "be over by 10PM". By midnight it really started to get going and got pretty loud. We did enjoy their restaurant. Great burgers and BLTs. Long walk to downtown but we did it at least once a day (all the exercise gave us an excuse to buy ice cream while in town!!)

TMW - 7-17-2007 at 07:09 AM

If you have a Baja travel club card or AAA you can get a discount at many hotels especially the higher priced ones. Reguardless it doesn't hurt to ask.

capt. mike - 7-18-2007 at 07:15 AM

try La Casa Jalisco, in town a block or 2 off the main drag. clean with a pool free breakfast. best rates. stayed there 2004 baja 1000 ref from Desert Bull.
the la concha is my fav if you just want to hang on the beach but its a splurge $$.
wish i was there now.
