Longer Term Visit - Insights please

tim40 - 7-17-2007 at 11:58 AM

We (2 adults and 2 teenagers) will be visiting MX for an extended vacation (11 months) starting in September. The 180 day limit on the FMT will not be an issue as we will be leaving the country a couple of times to visit other countries during the 11 months. Our question is what are the limitations as to what we will be able to bring with us and what is required to prove that it is all for personal use and will return with us when we do?

Between clothing, kids sporting equipment, laptops, and umpteen other items to may our trip most enjoyable we are going to have to tow a small enclosed utility trailer behind our car.

Guidance and insights are greatly appreciated.

AWESOME !!!!

Teenagers?! BRING MONEY, AND LOTS OF IT!

Really, you shouldn't have a problem, unless you decide to bring a laptop per person! (or more)

Are you camping mostly? They understand camping supplies. No problem. It's when you start bringing stuff that looks brand new and sellable that raises eyebrows.

Try and get the kids to keep journals, they will thank you for it some day!

Have a great trip, and be safe, Debra

I think the FMT is only valid for 180 days from date of issue ---

You will get lots of advice... Maybe get a printout of what's allowed from the Mexican consulate/ embassy so some 'hungry' border gaurd won't take advantage of your possesions.

Tim,
Since a tourist visa for 180 days is the longest I'm aware of and ,most likely, in your 11 month here, you will have to time that visa twice to be able to comply with the 180 day limitation, I would go to your closest consulate and find out if you can make arraigments more suitable for your situation.
Just a suggestion.

Careful, Tim! We came down for a 3-month vacation. That was almost two years ago. Not sure when the vacation will be over. If ever.

This trip will definitely 'only' be 11 months as we have promised our daughter that she can graduate HS at her current HS. Most of our items will look like things to fill a house as we are leasing a 'home base' to conduct our travels from. The difference is that we will bring them home after 11 months.

Checking with the MX consulate is a good idea.

Others?

Remember to lock the trailer to the hitch and to lock the trailer as well.
