Towed vehicle insurance

DENNIS - 7-17-2007 at 01:32 PM

I'm assuming everybody buys Mexican insurance for traveling in Mexico. Do you also get a seperate policy for your trailer?
I think you're supposed to.
Has this topic been beaten to death in the past?

Diver - 7-17-2007 at 04:27 PM

You can add the towed trailer to your Mexico auto policy.
Either through Discover or Lewis, the situation is the same.
We have done this every year.

A towed vehicle (another car) may require a separate policy.

I'm told different by the insurance rep in Punta Banda but, I have a feeling it has to do with the initial policy. I, and many others, buy the drivers licence insurance policy. Basic coverage for around $145 per year. With this policy, a seperate trailer policy is required if you want it insured for around $240 per year. I'm surprised how many people I talk to with drivers license insurance don't know this.

Diver - 7-17-2007 at 04:53 PM

When we buy our anual policy, the car and towed vehicle information is on the same application and gets covered by the same policy. I've never gotten just the "driver's license" insurance as we always have a US vehicle and either camper, camp trailer and/or boat, with us. If you already have some kind of policy, it may be more difficult to "add" another item to the policy.

I see what you mean, Diver .....

The DL policy covers the driver, basically, in any U.S. plated car he drives. One actually has to provide a stateside address to get it. [ I know I'll soon be hearing of the inconsistancy to this detail ]
It isn't sold to the Mexicans because it's supposed to be for non full time residents.
Anyway, ask your agent about. I'm sure he can explain it better than I'm doing.

I have always heard that if you tow something without it being insured it can make your whole policy null and void. Personally I have never wanted to test the validity of that claim.

I have an annual, full coverage policy... If I decide to tow ANYTHING, the policy must be ammended because the towed vehicle/ trailer is not included otherwise... Also, towing something could be the cause of an accident, so towing anything needs to be added to the policy.

A simple phone call or email can take care of the addition... Print out the ammended policy and put it with the other, in your car.

David -----

Full coverage on both sides I assume? Ouch. That has to be painful.

Painful? No... Mexican full coverage is about $250 for my $30,000 truck... Northwest Mexico, max. 90 days per year in Mexico (as if they had any way to actually know)... I am in Baja less than 60 days a year.

Naturally, I have full coverage in California as I live here and the truck is financed... about $100/ month.

You can either have the trailer listed on the same policy as the primary vehicle or have it insured separately (a "trailer only" policy) if it is going to be towed by different vehicles. Depending on the value of the trailer, you can get full coverage or simply get just the liability. In some cases, adding a trailer for just the liability coverage does not increase the premium....it just depends on who the underwriter is.

This is an annual policy with full coverage in all of Mexico...it is a quote for my Motoerhome valued at 20,000 and full timer insurance with same as home owner. Same policy as Good Sams. It has a trailer value of $7500. I will increase medical payments under Mexico coverage to $5000...but for $722 a year it is very good coverage.
Hope this PDF posts
best deal is I don't switch back and forth or even call them for that matter. I also have a annual driver license policy with Vags (liability)
The policy provides legal representing as does the Vags policy

what would an estimate be for a trailer only policy for a small 5'x8' (beater) utility trailer???

Driver Policy

CaboRon - 7-19-2007 at 09:28 AM

I am going with the driver liability policy because I can't get full coverage in Mexico without also buying full coverage in the States .... even if the vehicle never leaves Mexico .... now that is an insurance industry rip:fire: CaboRon

It's not funny but "Partial Theft" is not covered in many policies, buyer beware ..... and yes look at the fine print ......... CaboRon

My experience with the Vagabundos jives with what Baja Geoff says. No real increase to add a trailer to my existing policy for simply liability.

Bajaguy, you need to indicate to Geoff whether you want a liability only quote or a full coverage quote.

BajaGeoff - 7-19-2007 at 04:25 PM

Hello everyone.....here are my thoughts on this thread:

Baja Guy - If the trailer is valued than less than $3000 then it would only be eligible for liability coverage. What is the value?

Jerry - Personal belongings are never covered by an auto insurance policy. This is true for auto insurance coverage in the U.S. as well. However, anything inside the vehicle may be covered by a renters insurance or homeowners insurance policy. Check with your U.S. insurer to see if they cover personal belongings when they are taken into Mexico.

Cabo Ron - "Partial Theft" only applies to parts of the vehicle that are stolen (seats, tires, engine components, etc.) and not contents. Also, you should look into getting a "Resident" policy - that way you can discontinue your U.S. policy and not have to pay on both sides of the border. It depends on the underwriter you insure through though, and may require special permission.

Cheers,

Utility Trailer

bajaguy - 7-19-2007 at 04:30 PM
